Historical Traveller Reviews of Novotel Birmingham Centre Hotel

No good for us!

from JNet
We checked into the Novotel on 15th Dec for two nights. The room was lovely, car park excellent, location good.
We were on the third floor and in a busy city centre, you expect noise from the street and from other guests what we didn't expect was to be kept awake til 1.30 am by the function...'wake me up by wham' was a particular favourite by 1am! Once the function finished we had the pleasure of hearing the couple next door continue the celebrations very audibly! (I can only assume that this was due to having an adjoining door to the room, or the walls are made of paper!)
So, if you are in Birmingham to party and aren't adverse to hearing your neighbours bedroom antics, none of this would be a problem...but not everyone is and Novotel want to have their cake and eat it by filling the hotel with guests as well as holding functions. With another function booked for the Saturday night, we checked out and were granted a refund for the Friday night.

excellent choice for birmingham

from jambo2jambo
been to birmingham a couple of times (to watch villa play!). best hotel i stayed in. only 72GBP through the hotel website. room was larger than normal. comfy bed. superb breakfast. everything you needed. only complaint was that on the sat night there was a wedding downstairs and as we were on the 1st floor the music was quite loud until 1.30am. Ask for a quieter room and it'll be perfect.
location was just right. close enough to all restaurants and shops. will stay there again.

Loved the Novotel

from britgirl16_uk
We picked this specific hotel as my friend had to attend a interview. We found the staff very helpful and friendly. The room was clean and of a good standard. The beds were unbelievby comfortable, couldn't get out of beds sometimes!!

Your very close to all amenties; O'neils, Sainsburys and resturants were down the road. The Bullring and markets is about a 10-15 mins walk. I very enjoyable walk.

Breakfast is a must so much to choose from.

Would definatley stay here again. Would recommend it to anyone!

Very close to being Fawlty Towers

from RMB72
Stayed at this hotel for two nights in August 2006.

Right on Broad Street - in the middle of the main going out area of Birmingham
+ Great if you want to be next to all the bars
- Not so good if you don't relish ploughing through the hoards of drunken Brummies and the odd fight of an weekend evening
The hotel had security on the front door at night to stop the drunken rabble coming in to use the toilet/lifts (always exhibits a touch of class, don't you think!!!). You even need to use your key card to access the lifts (any time of day), suggesting there have obviously been security issues here.

Check-in / service
First impressions were bad - had to queue for 10-15 minutes to check in, as only 1 member of staff on reception. Eventually complained about the wait and they found another member of staff to servce us.

Room (115 - 1st floor) was of reasonable size, but some aspects of the decor were very low-spec.
+ Was nice to have a sofa
+ Bed was very comfortable
- There was no minibar or safety deposit box
- Vinyl wallpaper in the bathrooms and artex on all of the walls/ceilings!
- Room was incredibly dark and dingy - it had only a tiny, unopenable window
- Shower was the worst I had ever come across in a hotel - no pressure at all and had to limbo to wash hair!
- Constant clicking / thumping noise all day and all night, presumably from heating system? (but couldn't identify)

Complaint handling/ Service
Abysmal!!! On the first night my companion and I returned to our room to discover neither of our keycards would unlock the door to our room. Traipsed back to reception, who re-programmed the cards. Went back upstairs and found that still neither card worked.
Fed up with this, and the poor check-in experience, I asked to see the duty manager. To cut a long story short, we were told that we had locked our room from the inside (even though we were both clearly outside!) and that it was our fault that our keycards had stopped working. Somebody please explain that one to me!!! Housekeeper had to be called to let us back in. We did not get any apology, and were made to feel like we had done womething wrong!
Next day, we arrived back from the theatre, only to find that both our keycards had stopped working yet again and we couldn't get back into our room. This hotel clearly has a problem with its locks, and very definitely has a problem in apologising to guests.

Breakfast was reasonable - a decently stocked buffet and pleasantly attentive service

I have stayed in many hotels in Birmingham, and can categorically say that this was the worst. The dated rooms didn't help, but the constant bad service and the inability of staff/management to offer any apology was really the final straw.

Recommend you stay somewhere else!

High standard as always from Novotel

Same as always... with novotel... CONSITENTLY GOOD!!! Excellent hotel, clean and more than just functional!! Hotel is based on Broad Street which seems to be the nightlife centre of the city.... bar after bar after bar. Was a little apprehensive about this, safety etc... but although I expect there could be trouble on the street I didn;t encounter it and none of the noise etc could be heard in the hotel reception area or room. Staff were excellent at check in and check out. Only recommendation I would make to any potential guest of this/any other Novotel/Accor chain hotel is NEVER to pay the full tariff. There are many good internet deals to pay if you get in early/reasonably early ... and it saves the frustration I witnessed with another guest who was paying double the discounted rate his friends were paying!

Modern Central Hotel

from Traveller!Croydon
Unsure of where to stay in Birmingham city centre, I viewed Trip Advisor. As on previous occasions, the reviews helped me decide.

Two adults and one child (a teenager) shared a superior room (410) for two nights, 23 and 24 June 2006. Total paid GBP 177 (total for parking: GBP 13.00, GBP 164 for the two nights).

LOCATION: The hotel is on the corner of Broad Street and Granville Street with secure underground non allocated parking bays (GBP 8.00 per 24 hours). Close proximity to the canal, the International Convention Centre and Brindley Place with its many bars and restaurants.

RECEPTION: The reception staff were courteous, efficient and cordial, who facilitated our requests swiftly, ie (1) at check-in we asked for drinking chocolate sachets, these were obtained from the restaurant and handed to us by the time we had completed our registration card, (2) a request for additional towels also met a prompt reaction, and (3) occupants of a room further along the hallway decided to take their vociferous discussion into the corridor at 02h30. Front Desk was contacted and the disturbance dealt with calmly and swiftly.

ROOM: Entering the room we came into a small vestibule. Opposite the entrance a full length mirror with a light above. To the left of the entrance was a separate WC; to the right, a clothes rail cubicle housing an iron and ironing board, and adjacent the wardrobe, a beverage area with mini-bar. Below the mini-bar was a digital safe. The sleeping area measured approximately 12ftx15ft (3.7mx4.6m) which comprised a double bed, sofa-bed, a dressing table/work space and television, with a limited choice of satellite channels. The non-opening window overlooked Granville Street. The room was clean, modern and well presented.

BATHROOM: Entrance via the sleeping area, which contained a separate glassdoor shower cubicle, contemporary wash hand basin and a bath (slightly smaller than the UK standard) with shower attachment.

BREAKFAST: This was included in our room rate. The menu offered fruit juices, fresh and dried fruit, cereals, yoghurt and yoghurt drinks, deli meats and cheese (and smoked salmon), mini-pastries and the standard array of cooked English fayre.

Brilliant Location

from KevBains
In a hard to beat location for nightlife, the Bullring and concerts at the National Indoor Arena.

Staff were friendly and polite at all times. The menu for room service (24 hrs) is the best I have seen anywhere....can especially recommend the Club Sandwich served with a side salad and proper chips for £6.95.

Breakfast was good although I felt the breakfast area was a little small on the morning of our stay and people were waiting to be shown to a table ( the hotel was fully booked as a result of the Eagles being in town).

The room was very clean and included a minibar and a safe as standard. The bed was lovely and comfortable...if I had to have a gripe it would have to be the fact that the toilet in the room was a small room on its own. It had no wastebin or a handbasin...leaves me to question the hygiene aspect of this arrangement as everybody has to put their hands immediatly onto the door handle to get walk around the corner into the bathroom to wash your hands. Also found that space for toiletries in the bathroom was very limited...although on the plus side it had both a bath and a powerful shower.

Never the less apart from his little moan the hotel is clean, bright, comfortable and has a great location. Will definetely stay again when next in Birmingham.

Great Hotel

from Louise018
Stayed at the Novotel Birmingham for 3 nights and was pleasantly surprised by what we found.

Location: Excellent. Within walking distance of Brindley Place, Bullring & Mailbox.

Room: small but has everything you need - hairdryer, iron & ironing board, safe & minibar. Very clean also

Bathroom: Really nice, shower is really powerful.

Staff: found them to be very efficient & polite

We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on food but overall we found this to be a great hotel, and very good value for money.

Would definitely stay here again

Great location

from Craigmogs
A great choice for shopping and nightlife. Comfortable , quiet rooms close to Bullring, Mailbox etc. football grounds easily accessed via New Street. Broad Street location fabulous for nitelife. Great choice of Breakfast and the deals available for 2 night stays are good.

Comfy and pleasant

from sv650uk
Stayed in one of the superior rooms which was very clean and comfortable.

Nice to see a proper bath and a separate shower cubicle in the bathroom, however did find it a bit odd with the loo being "hidden" in a little closet by the room door.

Breakfast was top notch and both the waiting & reception staff were freidly and courteous.
