Whenever I stay in Birmingham it has to be at the Burlington for its central location, period elegance, friendly and courteous staff and the great English breakfast, freshly cooked to order; quite a rarety! Their claim to source only the best produce is well founded.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Macdonald Burlington Hotel

Recommended with small reservations

from Klaus56
I purchased their weekend package including half board at a rate of GBP 92 per night for a single standard room.
Check-in: Fast, friendly and efficient
Room: 3rd floor, clean and big enough for a weekend stay. Having read the previous reviews the first thing I checked was the shower. I worked OK but the mechanism per se was strange. There was pretty much noise from the street even in the early hours on Sunday morning. The mattress was a bit hard but this actually applies to many other hotels with a similar rating.
Dining: Their breakfast was of excellent value. The three course dinner not quite top gourmet but nevertheless quite satisfactory.
Location: Excellent for most activities in B'ham.
Check-out: See check-in
Conclusion: Burlington MacDonalds is a priceworthy alternative for a weekend traveller/shopper wishing to stay downtown. Will probably consider staying here next time as well.

Avoid at All costs

I stayed in this hotel for 1 night on business. I had booked the best available room which was large and superficially attractive.

The first thing one expects of any hotel is a bed in which it is possible to sleep well. The bed in my room was the lumpiest bed I have ever had the misfortune to have encountered in many years of business travel. Sleep was impossible.

The shower in the bathroom was very disappointing - wildly varying, uncontrollable temperature, a pathtic dribble and a fixed shower head.

Room service breakfast was below average.

Birmingham is a much improved city in recent years and this hotel lets it down terribly. I would strongly recommend trying either the Novotel for a hotel within the same price bracket, or better still the excellent Premier Serviced Apartments for more personal space and in both cases extremely comfortable beds and efficient service.

There is absolutely nothing I could fault about the Burlington Hotel. This is the most centrally located hotel I have ever stayed in and it has retained its air of individuality over many other identikit chains.
Even though we arrrived way before our check-in time, getting access to our room was no problem and what a room!
The bathroom was bigger than some of the rooms I've stayed in with a fantastic walk in shower and bath.
The beds were very comfortable and despite being slap bang in the middle of town, the place was very quiet and peaceful at night.
As I explained, the hotel is 2 minutes from New Steet Station and only 5 minutes in either direction from Victoria Square and the Bullring. The cinema is also very close at hand. It felt safe to return to at night after dark.
If I was returning to Brum I'd have absolutely no hesititation in staying here again.

Solid 4 star hotel

from dsw187
I stayed one night in January 2006. The hotel has a good central location. My single club room was roomy and the furniture was modern. The bathroom was a good size and seemed recently re-fitted. I thought the buses running along Stephenson Street were noisy so I would recommend asking for a room which faces onto New Street, which is pedestrianised. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, how a 4 star hotel should be.

Hotel not as good as I expected but the Club Rooms are great

from smb0903
My stay at this hotel was booked through my company for a business trip. Having been advised of my destination I had a look on their website and the reviews on this website. I proceeded to contact the hotel to request that a Club Room be booked for my stay. This request was made 4 times via telephone and e-mail but to no avail. It was only when I turned up in person after a 3 hour train journey when I complained did they advise me they had a cancellation and that a single Club Room would be available for my one night stay only. They were going to charge me £10 for the upgrade.

My late arrival at the hotel didn't give me alot of time to change for dinner but I didn't worry as I was only 1 of 3 tables that were seated that evening.

The breakfast, nonetheless, is very good value and plenty of choice.

Good, and getting better

Just returned from a weekend at the Burlington. Excellent location for shopping, bull ring, german market. Only short walk to Broad street for night life.

I booked via late rooms for £65 p/room rather than £160 on their website. The room was a good size, clean and tidy and the bathroom was pretty modern. The rooms look like they are going through a gradual refurbishment.

Don't waste your money with the £14.95 p/head breakfast Debenhams (around the corner) offer the same for £2.95 !

Not great for a 4 star

from a_reviewer79
I stayed at the Burlington for 3 nights for a work conference. I have to say I was dissapointed with the overall quality of the hotel.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The man who looks after your bags when you check out is lovely.

Their website boasts of traditional rooms and more modern rooms. I and my colleagues all had traditional rooms allocated to us.
The size of the room was fine. More than enough for one. It was the quality of the furnishings that let it down. The chairs were old and raggedy. The cupboard was old and smelt musty. The carpet was disgusting. Stains eveywhere. It wasn't great. The bed was fine. Very soft pillows.

The bathroom looked like it was fairly new. The shower was terrible to use though. I had to practically slam the shower doors together to even get them close to closing. The shower head was about 5'5 off the floor. I know this because my head touched the shower head when I showered. It couldnt be adjusted so unless youre under 5'5 there is no chance you can stand comfortably and shower.

I was really dissapointed with the hotel and its supposed 4 star status. The staff are lovely though. I can see that as it modernises, with time, it could become a really lovely place to stay. At the moment though I can think of better four star hotels in Birmingham to spend my (well, the company's) hard earned money.

Great Hotel in the Centre of Birmingham

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at The Burlington for 3 nights in September 05. Everyone from the reception to the bar staff were very friendly and were always trying to help. The rooms are of a really good standard and the breakfast served in the room was brilliant. Every day it arrived on time! The hotel is right in the centre of Birmingham - only a 10 minute walk from Broad Street and a 3 minute walk to the Bullring. My 2 work colleagues also stayed there and they were really pleased with their rooms and the hotels. I will definately be staying there again.

City Centre comfort

from Scenic06
The Macdonald Birmingham (formerly the Midland Hotel) is a sympatheically refurbished station hotel in the old style, sandwiched between the shopping throngs in New Street and the concrete horror of the Pallisades shopping mall above New Street Station. This is about as central as you can get in Birmingham so the £92 a night weekend room rate we got including B&B for two was very reasonable. Comfy well sprung bed. There is a choice of traditionally furnished rooms or (for a bit more) more modern "minimalist" rooms. The no smoking restaurant offers a £22 a head three course meal which my wife and I enjoyed. Helpful multilingual staff. Popular with conferences and weddings.

Ok, once I changed room

Excellent central location, but parking is in the NCP about 5 mins walk away (£9.60 overnight rate)

On arrival the receptionist wasn't over-friendly and was having a conversation with another member of staff whilst processing my check-in. I wasn't given any info about breakfast where/when.

Single room was teeny-weeny - well presented, but very crowded. You had to move things to get around the room & single bed is always a bit of a disappointment these days.

Bathroom was clean and took up most of the room's overall space. Getting ready for an evening out, lathered myself up with body scrub only to find that the shower would either run cold or scalding hot. The mixer valve was obviously faulty. I had to rinse my hair under the running bath mixer tap. Reported this to reception.

When I got back in from dinner, I checked the shower & it hadn't been fixed. Rang reception & within minutes I was moved to one of the club rooms on the 2nd fllor - WOW! what a difference. Modern, bright, chic, molton brown toiletries, bathrobe, sink was part of a tiled bar that was part of the bedroom (shower and wc were in their own separate cubicles).

Room service breakfast arrived early (!?) and was ok, but not brilliant.

I paid £85 B&B and was annoyed to find that a £65 B&B rate was being offered to others in the group, but at least I got a better room in the end.

Over dinner, my boss said that he was in a massive room with three pice suite and huge bathroom. It shows that you get preferential treatment if your a Dr rather than a Miss.
