Stag & Hen Hell

We stayed at Jurys Inn Birmingham last weekend for my son's 6th birthday as we had planned to take him to Cadbury World. In my opinion this hotel is not suitable for children, families or, in fact, anyone over the age of 30 as it is full of stag and hen parties. They show no consideration for other patrons. They are constantly loud and swear regardless of whether there are children there or not. On our second night we were awoken at 2.20am by shouting and screaming in the corridors. We even got up especially early on Sunday so we could have our breakfast in peace.

The room was fine apart from the shower, which went from scalding hot to freezing cold no matter what setting you put it on.

In contrast, the staff couldn't have been any nicer. I actually feel sorry for them having to work there and deal with these louts every weekend.

If you are looking for a hotel in Birmingham, take my advice and be willing to pay that little bit extra so you don't have to go through the same as we did. I, personally, will never stay at a Jurys Inn again.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Jurys Inn Birmingham Hotel

Jurys Inn An excellent Conference Hotel

from Grj
The hotel was a busy city centre type but adjacent to the ICC and so very convenient for the conference and social life as well as central Birmingham and the Mailbox, a delightful walk along the canal. The hotel coped well with a large number booking in togrther and also a lot of people at breakfast at the same time and the food was a good buffet with everything you would want for this price range. The room was clean and functional and reasonably decorated, the bathroom not bad although the shower screen was a little too small to stop some water getting on the floor.
The room we had was on the 12th floor and from colleagues the higher rooms away from the busy clubs and traffic were an improvement, ask not to have a room that overlooks the main road Broad Street.
Our main gripe was the bar where anything out of very basic was not coped with, especially liquers and was expensive and lacked any real good seating.
Nevertheless we would use again and at a conference rate it was good value, the car parking is expensive but this is often the case in a big city location and is way under London prices.

Firstly some contexual info. I have relied on Trip Advisor for selecting hotels for over 2 years and the reviews have never ever let me down! I was booked into the Jurys Inn as part of a conference delegation group booking and when I looked it up on Trip Advisor I was really worried about what I would find! Basically, I would never have booked this hotel based on the reviews - but I didn't make the booking on this occasion so I was stuck!

However, it would appear that the reviews are not totally accurate in this instance - or at least what they report I did not experience.

Firstly, noise! I sleep very lightly and need it virtually silent in order to sleep. The reviews said that we were in the heart of club land (Broad Street)so naturally I was worried. On checking in I asked the very helpful receptionist for a room that was as high and far towards the back of the hotel as possible as I wanted a quiet room where I could get some sleep. She obliged with a room on the 15th floor at the far end of the corridor. As a result, I slept the best I have done for ages in a hotel for 4 consecutive nights, including 2 where the clubs were in full swing until the early hours! They have so many rooms that a request like mine shouldn't be a problem - but you've got to ask! Others in similar delegations to ours had to move rooms for noise reasons so I can see that there is the potential for some club noise! To be honest, with the location of the hotel they need to invest in double glazing.

Secondly, the food. We ate dinner the first night which was really good - a buffet arrangement which could lead to some over indulgence! The breakfasts were fine - a large choice of cooked or continental and while the cooked was not the tastiest in the world, it was as good as you'd get in a Little Chef etc. And, again, you could have loads! Yes, things did run out but a quick word with the supervising staff and they replenished them with no problem and with courtesy!

Thirdly, the room itself. This was of a high standard and much better than a Travelodge or Premier Travel Inn. It was large with 2 double beds (proper sized!), a TV and a desk. The bathroom was large, clean and had a powerful shower. To be honest, I'm surprised that the hotel is only a 3 star! I've stayed in far worse 4 star hotels than this. Yes, it's functional but what else do you expect from a business-type hotel adjacent to a conference centre? The room was cleaned and tidied well each day, and the maids seemed to be willing to fit in with your plans i.e. they didn't come bursting in when you were there as I have experienced in other european countries. The room seemed fairly soundproof although there were conference delegates on both sides of us and, being fairly sensible and intelligent, they clearly understood about keeping the noise down in hotel rooms - a concept that is seemingly lost on many people these days!!!!

Overall, don't be afraid of the Jurys Inn, but do be clear in what you want and expect of them! Some of our group had billing problems - but when they were clear about what they wanted this was immediately sorted out. Another couple with kids had asked for an interconnecting room which they did not get straight away. Again, they explained what they wanted and received it straight away! And the staff are all polite and helpful - this goes a long way in my book!

Okay, but some problems

from Mark1978
I was wary of staying here after I'd previously given it a bad review, but it turned out okay.

The car parking is in a dirty multi storey and 2 nights cost us £18 in car parking charges!

The hotel itself is nice but whenever we wanted to talk to reception we found it beseiged by seemingly hundreds of people, I think there was some sort of work function on.

The room was okay, with a double bed and a sofa, table and chairs as well as the usual desk area. The bed was a little smaller than you would expect in most hotels and had cupboards built around the head of it meaning there was no beside table aside from a shelf which you had to pull out, which then became quite a hazard for getting up at night, I had a bruise for a couple of weeks to prove the point!

For some reason they still use sheets instead of duvets? Why?! Duvets are far more comfortable and it led to quite an uncomfortable two nights sleep. The first night was the worst as the temperature controls for the room were impossibly complicated, despite reading the instructions were were unable to raise the temperature of the room to anything above freezing! Thankfully we seemed to have pressed the right buton by the second night.

The shower was quite good, except that the shower screen was useless meaning flooding the floor was compulsory.

However these are minor gripes, on the whole it was a good stay and the room was quite large. The hotel is in an excellent position in the middle of Broad St.

I probably would stay here again but might investigate alternatives first.

Disapointed-poor value for money

from A TripAdvisor Member
The only reason I didnt give this hotel a 'terrible' rating is because it was clean and the shower was good!
I cant believe they can get away with charging what they do, especialy for breakfast, it was disgusting. And then to have to pay to park in a crappy, poorly lit car park is a real insult. Even worse though, and to rub salt into a raw wound, after paying £25 to park we found the barrier up and no-one taking the tickets!!!! AGGGHHHHHHH.
This is a bad hotel.

Central location, great staff

from laney365
Stayed 2 nights at Jurys which is a stone's throw from the train station and the centre of Birmingham. No car necessary. The Bull Ring has every shop imaginable and Selfridges and Harvey Nicks staggering distance from the hotel. The canal is also a short distance away with bars and restaurants to suit every taste.

Only had breakfast at the hotel but Michelle in the restaurant could not be more helpful including a big smile every day!

Good base for exploring the big city if you just need a clean bed and bathroom at a reasonable price.

Not pleasant !!!

from spoyzone
Stayed here on business in Oct 2005 so didn't choose the place myself. I was expecting the hotel to be a proper hotel but it's effectively a motel with a bar and has all the atmosphere of an airport terminal. For stag and hen do's I can see the attraction - rooms are large with nothing in them to damage, the public areas are cavernous and the hotel is on the entertainment strip of the city but for everyone else - avoid. I arrived quite late and tired and just wanted to relax in my room with dinner but the hotel doesn't offer room service. You can order from the bar and then carry it to your room for that genuine student feel !!! The room was large, uninviting, had 2 double beds in and no other decor except (as someone has mentioned) that motorway service station feel. To add insult to injury, when you get back to your car after finally leaving this dump, you have the pleasure of being charged a fortune for parking at the hotel. Do yourself a favour - if you have to visit Birmingham, stay in Warwick or Stratford. If you have to stay in Birmingham, find another hotel.

Avoid like the plague

I had the unfortunate experience of staying in this hotel for business. The place is a disgrace. The food is disgusting and breakfast is not what you would expect. Use the City Inn its much better standard and the food is superb.

I would rather stay in a travel lodge than this hotel

Nice hotel, poor breakfast

from Davewilko
I stayed at this hotel for a mate's stag night. The staff were all very helpful and businesslike. The room was basic but nice and clean. The only downside was that the breakfast wasn't very appealing and there wasn't much choice even first thing on a saturday morning.

The hotel is on a main pubs and clubs street in Birmingham and the area is as safe as in any major city. Even though the hotel seemed full of stag and hen nights, we didn't hear anything (but we did go to bed late!)

Terrible rooms - Great buffet

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in this hotel which as far as I know is a converted office building. The room had the athmosphere of an office (bland and cold with painted white walls which wasn't very cosy) and if you wanted you can't even open a window which made it very claustrophobic.
It had a great evening buffet though!
Avoid it if possible.

jurys inn
