Arrived to find hotel overbooked despite having booked months in advance. Hotel explained that they operate a deliberate policy of overbooking. Had to travel 20 miles to Coventry at 1.00am with children.

Waited an hour to check in. Many guests were already complaining. Room in old part of hotel Small, only 1 single bed. No heating/cooling controls in room. Overlooks a lake, & you are advised not to open windows/doors in room due to mosquitoes. Overpriced drinks (6.95) lge wine! Food in bar below average & overpriced. Buffet OK.

Need to get their check in and out organised

from herfds
Stayed here to attend a function. Family who arrived first were refused a room despite being told by phone earlier that check in was open at 3 and they got there at five to three. They were told to wait until 4pm.
check in was slow, it was a big function and lots of us were arriving but there were only 2 staff on reception so we had to queue. Doormen completely ignored us and there were no offers of help despite the fact that we were carrying evening dresses and needed trolleys.
At check out they had lost any record of our room, despite the fact that we had a key they asked whether we had actually stayed in the hotel... wish I had said no cos then I needednt have paid!
Everything esle in the hotel was fine, good service elsewhere, clean room, helpful staff, good food and excellent service and food at breakfast. This hotel obviously caters for a lot of people coming and going so i am amazed that their reception service is so poor.

Poor value at rip-off Hilton

from neilroskilly
This place is as awful as the reviews suggest: bland, stodgy breakfast, scruffy rooms and poor service. Despite the huge queues, there were only one or two persons serving at reception. I had to change rooms as there were bits falling off of the wall in my first room, and the phone didn't work. My second room had cold water constantly dripping into the bath from, wait for it, the overflow! The surrounding woodlands are litter-strewn. The pool is okay and the bar large and relaxing, but generally Hilton don't care as they have a captive market.

Terrible safety standards

from Welshtorchy
Stayed at the Metropole in Feb for 2 nights as I was attending an exhibition at the NEC and because they offered a good rate £75 per room per night, dinner on the first night + breakfast on both mornings. Food very good, bar extremely expensive £8 for a glass of wine! Bar staff attentive not so the waiting staff in the restaurant.

Now the problem.....

The fire alarm was activated around 12.30am. Many people (including families with young children) evacuated the hotel. NO members of staff communicated with any guests. The fire service said they were checking for a fire. I entered the hotel to see may people sitting at the bar having a drink. At this time evacuees re-entered the hotel & asked for the Manager. She claimed that 3 tannoy announcements had been made to tell eveyone it was safe to re-enter the hotel - no-one I spoke to had heard this - inside or outside the hotel. The alarm continued for some time. No other member of staff seemed to know what to do. Altogether the worst evidence I have ever seen of fire safety procedures. I hope action is taken before someone dies in a fire at this hotel!

This incident has been reported to Hilton....we wait eargerly for a reply.

Nice business hotel

from MortenA
Stayed at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole for two night attending a conference atthe same hotel.

I really liked the hotel. As a Hilton bonus club member i got an upgraded room that was very nice. Clean and a very nice bathroom with both a shower (that i prefeer) and a tub.

Found the food to be good (also the dinner served at the conference) and very friendly staff.

I coul see that the hotel was also used for "emergency accomodations" for air line passengers staded in Birmingham. That caused a long line at check-in just after i checked in. as a bonus club mem i did however use a special check in counter.

The bar was very well visited with a friendly staff.

All in all i enjoyed my stay - but then again i wasnt paying the bill :-)

Asked for my money back

from katydr
We queued at reception in a long line like an airport check-in, and given keys to two cupboards posing as single rooms at the back of a lift shaft. The rooms were so hot is was impossible to stay in them, so we queued again and given other rooms just as bad. The food was awful, so we left the next morning even though I had paid for 3 nights, and asked for my money back from Hilton, which I got, a full refund. Never again.

Specifically booked a no smoking room and was knocked over by the smell of stale cigarette smoke when entering the room. The bed linen, curtains and everything stank and were dirty. Complained and asked for another room which eventually were given under protest. Staff were disinterested and management insisted it was a no smoking room. Drinks are so overpriced in the bars that it is a joke. Wine with meals is outrageous. Good point - the exit door.

Sceptical but happily surprised

Having read previous reviews before booking we weren't sure if this was going to be a good idea but at it was a last minute reservation so we could attend an NEC exhibition and other hotels were fully booked, we paid up and showed up. Well, after a horrendous trip with hold ups all the way, we were checked into a comfortable clean room (overlooking the swimming pool). The twin beds were wide enough that you didn't fall out of bed every time you moved. We had the "special" two night inclusive of breakfast and first night evening meal which was a pretty good deal. The food was great with plenty of choice and although the hotel was busy because of Dive/Bike Show/functions, the staff were friendly and helpful, we didn't feel rushed at any time. Parking at the hotel was very easy and cheap and a scenic 5 minute walk to the NEC. Will definitely return.

Not Impressed.

from Sedgley
Put into the hotel because of a flight delay, which is a good thing, because I would have not liked to pay for it.

Room was very small and bathroom tiny. The room was unsuitable to work in mainly because of the space and lack of power sockets. The one available socket was hanging off the wall.

On a positive note the restaurant was not bad and the staff extremely helpful.

Surprisingly not bad

from TravelFan_01
Myself and my husband had booked to stay overnight here as we had an exhibition to attend at the NEC. We committed the sin of not checking how the hotel was rated on this site before booking it so when we actually checked, we were more than a little apprehensive about staying. However, we reasoned that we probably wouldn't find another room in the vicinity of the NEC at short notice so decided to bite the bullet, and stick with our reservation. We turned out to be quite pleasantly surprised.
The front desk staff we found to be helpful and friendly and gave us all of the information that we needed to know. Yes, the rooms (particularly the bathroom) are in need of a bit of an update but attempts have been made to freshen up the appearance with modern accessories. The room was spotless which I was happy to see although the negatives that I found were the lack of channels on TV and the firmness of the bed. I wouldn't say that I have a particularly soft bed at home but I found that the mattress was far too hard for me. I ended up sleeping with a pillow behind my back (which WERE very comfortable)!
The only meal we had at the hotel was breakfast (which was included in our room rate). As has been mentioned, it was buffet style and we found it very enjoyable. The selection (particularly the full English) was good, and all was hot. We found the staff to be attentive too.
All in all, we felt that the Hilton was reasonable for what we wanted. We weren't looking for anything spectacular, as it was only an overnight stop so in our opinion, the hotel served its purpose. However, we did find the room rate to be a little bit expensive although we don't know if prices fluctuate if there are large scale exhibitions being held at the NEC.

Brilliant stay for us!

We came for a party with people with MS, staying the night as well.

The room was fine; the bathroom well fitted out for someone with a disability; the room service excellent and nothing was too much trouble.

Yes! the Hotel is dauntingly large but we found the staff very helpful!
Thank you everyone!

A sandwich DID cost around £10 but it was a meal in itself with a side salad and beautifully served!
