Pretty good
from NixKitz….however when we checked in only 3 of the rooms were together – the other 3 were spread over 2 other floors and one room only had a double bed despite the request for 2 double beds! After much negotiation with reception they put what I can only describe as a camp bed in the room.
The rest of the rooms were excellent – 2 double beds in each making the rooms a nice size. Our room actually had a door linking to our friends adjacent room which was fab for pre-dinner drinks and getting ready for the night out. The rooms were very clean and the beds really comfortable. The bathroom was smallish but very clean.
Breakfast buffet was so-so, perhaps a little on the disappointing side as not that much to choose from.
5 of us used the leisure facilities. The pool, sauna and Jacuzzi were ok but could be much improved if they were renovated. There were some guys throwing a football to each other in the pool – it was a shame the staff did not stop this as it meant we could not swim whilst they hogged the pool.
Fab central location – right next to Broad Street so perfect for going out in the evening and a short walk to the Bullring.
Superior hotel
from fidel-castroAll the public spaces in the hotel are impressive and there are adequate, super fast lifts! However, if you use the carpark you will find it poorly lit and a bit depressing. The stairwell upto the front of the hotel is shabby and not at all inviting.
The location is great. Ideal for the nightlife of Broad street and Brindley Place, and the shops at the Bull Ring. However, the immediate area at the front of the hotel is a bit run down and you would need to use subways or a foot bridge to cross into the city's central area. Which was not a problem to me but the elderly and families may find it so, especially at night.
I would stay here again, but would look for a fairer rate as i see other guests have paid less, and had better value for money.
Pretty Good Hotel
from GagsGot what I thought was a good rate at £62 per room per night, but the week before they had the rooms at £53. This seems to be a common issue with ichotels, it has happened to me a few times now.(Just annoying when I usually book months in advance and then the week before the rates go down) And £16 for breakfast is too much - You are better off going to British Home Stores and getting 10 items and a cup of tea for about £3!!
Anyway the hotel itself it fairly good - rooms clean and spacious, although the whole place has a slightly 'worn' feel to it.
The hotel is in a good location in the centre of town, but to actually walk from New Street station is a bit of a challenge as there is a main road between the station and the hotel! You either have to head straight for the Mailbox and go under the road, or locate the red pedestrian bridge and go over that.
The pool and sauna areas were good - everything was working OK and clean enough.
The Big Wheel is up sort of behind the hotel on the main square - worth doing. Also the nightlife is along this street and around the redevloped canal area.
Immediately outside the hotel entrance is a void space with a big car park- seems there were a few shops there some time ago, but not now!
Overall a good hotel which I would recommned.
Very good stay
from LondiniumNot what it was
from callingalltheherosSharon in the restuarant was a welcome face, as warm and genuine as last time we stayed and Tony on Concierge has been in situ years.
It's a good hotel but could be much more with some investment.
Rooms very clean, breakfast is always first class and location is ideal
Fantastic hotel - Impeccable Service
from Jessicat stay
from youngsterdave76I have stayed in Crowne Plaza hotels around the globe and this is nothing more than a 2-star hotel with a Crowne Plaza board on the roof. This hotel is badly in need of updating and a price review!! When you compare the cost to other nearby hotels, you get a lot moer for your money (nice exec suite!) at hotels only a stone's throw away.
If you have a look at octopustravel's link for the hotel and look at the pics - big bed, jacuzzi bath - this surely cannot be the same hotel!
Desperately needs a refurb...
from MalcolmSuIt's well located for the city centre, which makes it quite noisy overnight, but there are better value hotels closer to hand.
Unbelievable
from Checkin-inI took my mum on a short break to Birmingham and upon arrival they only had one room booked instead of two. I ended up in a higher (ahem) standard of room, which still left a lot to be desired, even though I paid the same rate for both. I guess they must have over booked...!
The rooms had disgustingly dirty pillows and linen on the bed, and were old fashioned, musty, stale and of general poor condition.
I found this hotel overpriced, over-rated and would never stay here again.
good if you get a discounted rate
from muddy697Got a cheap rate of 49 a night without breakfast which I thought was pretty good. This was through the priority club website for the chain of hotels. Parking at 11 thought was ok for a city centre and the proximity to the shops and the carling academy where we were going to see a concert also good.
Our room was quite nice but rather faded round the edges and the lady running the gym facilities was friendly and efficient.
We found the evening concierge to be rather old and doddery and not that helpful but the daytime one better.
We had just come back from a fantastic 4 start in barcelona at around the same price, cant really compare the 2.
In all worth it if you get a discount but certainly don't bother with the full rate!
Top Local Tips for Birmingham
Bar Estilo The hotel is just two minutes from the Mailbox Shopping Centre which has great choice of restaurants. We chose the Bar Estilo which we booked in advance because there were 10 of us. Really nice meal and good value for money.
Dining Didn't use the hotel food facilities for no other reason than I prefer to get out and about. My tip for Birmingham is like for anywhere else, go to the Wetherspoons website and locate their outlets on a local map. I had a mixed grill (steak, gammon, lamb chops, pork fillet, chips and salad) together with a pint of Fosters extra cool for £5.99!!!!!............yes 5 English pounds and 99 pennies....how good is that in the middle of the secong largest city in England.
Bull ring and pallisades These 2 shopping centres merge into 1 and everyone i asked was really helpful in directing me - so well worth a look around but pallisades shuts earlier than bullring i think
