Historical Traveller Reviews of Copthorne Hotel Birmingham

Good but not 4 stars

from A TripAdvisor Member
Good things about Copthorne:
Great location, right beside ICC conference centre and main shopping areas of Birmingham.
Very clean and spacious room.
Friendly and helpful staff.

Bad things about Copthorne:
Dated building, could do with renovating.
Not as nice as you might expect for a 4 star, but the good points above just about make up for it.

Should not be called a 4* hotel

from Anna1974
We were a group of 10 people staying at this hotel for 1 night on business back in Dec 2005. First impressions were not great as check in was slow and unprofessional. There were three staff on at the time - two gossiping openly and loudly beind the recpetion and only one serving all of us.

The rooms were well below standard for a 4* hotel. Uncomforatble beds, a barren and grey feel to it and an untuned TV. The bathroom had no 'shower freebies', which I personally think should be expected in a 4* hotel.

The design of the bar downstairs was OK, but again, with very slow service and a very unexciting bar menu.

Due to all of the above we never bothered with breakfast or dinner at this hotel.

Moderate value hotel in central location.

We stayed one night and room was fine for a short stay. In-room lighting was quite dim and you could hear any noise made by passers-by in the corridor more clearly than you would expect in a hotel of this cost.

Am sure there is better value to be had in Birmingham.

This hotel was very disappointing.Sorely in need of updating throughout,we found checking in slow and expected to be able to eat in the brasserie before going to our New Year's Eve concert only to be told that it was closed as it is 'New Year's Eve'!
The room was reasonably clean but there was a dirty towel in the bathroom.
Overall it was very poor value for money and at £119 I think very overpriced.

s Time Warp!

Well what can i say, truly the first hotel that is designed solely to wind-up the guest in every way possible. The car park is so tight it's untrue. We had the last space by the bins which smelt disgusting. The room, a standard on the 5th floor, was incredibly outdated and very dark. There was nowhere near enough light to enable my partner to do her hair/make up etc. the lampshades were stained, the bathroom was awful, although clean. The best thing that could happen to this hotel would be for a very large skip to be placed outside and everything to be thrown in it. the whole place needs a drastic refurb. 4 star it is certainly not, only the prices are. Anyone who says this place is nice must live in a complete dingle pit.

The hotel is fine. But it doesn't have a pool or a leisure centre anymore. It's clean and comfortable. The rooms are nice enough. Shiny clean bathroom. No views. Well, it's Birmigham! Didn't have breakfast - that was extra. Lunch was edible. Staff were friendly enough. Good location - it's within walking distance of city centre, Bullring, train station etc.

Friendly but faded

from Bert74
Location is convenient, but not very appealing. The hotel is located in the middle of a roundabout. and adjacent to many concrete building. Looks awful outside. Entrance thorugh the restaurant is closed in the evening, leaving only a not so appealing and underlit route to the main entrance.

Decor not to my taste, others liked it however. Rooms look a bit tired, although they are kept clean to a good standard.

Windows do open (after a struggle with the mechanism) which I prefer to aircon, however, you can be on the side of the busy main street. Every morning woken up by lorries. Well insulated inside.

Spacious 'connaisseur' rooms. Breakfast voucher given (8 pounds) but preferred to take it elsewhere.

Reception very very friendly and helpful.

Try to negotiate a good price.

Take a sandwich to the Copthorne Birmingham

from LauraBLondon
the Copthorne Hotel in Birmingham is supposedly a 4*hotel. Service was very good, the location is convenient but very noisy. Seems to be on a roundabout, and the decor is looking slightly dated. The worst thing about it though was the food I was sent by room service. Very over priced, over £20 for a tiny chewy steak, soggy chips very salty sauce and a dry brown side salad made with eggs, dry olives and brown celery. Apparently it has a AA rosette star for food, but god knows how. If you need to eat in your room, find a take away!

Oh Dear

Whilst Birmingham is not know for being crammed with elegant architecture, the Copthorne Hotel really does deserve a prize for being one of the most unnatracive buildings in town. With its' dark brown shiny cladding and every one of it's square windows open to the limit of 6 inches it resembles a 1985 advent calendar produced by an inner city desparate to attract visitors by showcasing how very trendy it is (not)

Having booked ahead through an agency with a clearly marked no smoking room preference i was promtly given a smoking room, Reception advised to come back down to be issued with a new room card, this i did only to be told as was the person in front of me that there were no non smoking rooms available!

The room itself tho spacious seemed to have been last decorated at least 20 years before and included the pull down bed arrangement mentioned in other reviews, this i can cope with but the mattress appeared to be made from landfill and the pillows gave me severe neck ache, this added to the discernable 'smoking room' smell and the 2 dirty towels in the bathroom
leads me to advise you to wait for refurbishment or better still demolition and rebuild of this hotel.

a very good hotel worthy of 4 stars

from A TripAdvisor Member
we have found the copthorne excellent in all respects but two, one minor, the lighting in the bathroom not powerful enough, and a major one the lack of a fan or air/con, at night it can be incredibly stuffy and with the windows open the traffic noise is a problem(its a 24 hour city),i dont agree with two previous comments, 1, i have been to that area many times and never stumble on"downandouts and begars" for that you need manchester, also i have never found this hotel reaking of cigarette smoke at any time, rooms are well maintained and cleaned to a good standard,
probably the route to the hotel entance at night, as the entrance from millenium square is closed, could be better lit.

Top Local Tips for Birmingham

The Bull Ring Everthing there but exhausting. Easily two days of shopping. If you need daylight take an hour out and call in at Chez Jules(10 mins walk in a straight line!) for lunch. French/Med menu,

Pick a quite location Be careful where your hotel is located, so you do not end up next to a noisy night club.

Train to airport Use the train from downtown to and from the airport. A mini-railway takes you to and from the centre of the airport to Birmingham Int'l train station in 5 minutes. It's very easy, even with luggage.
