Historical Traveller Reviews of Apollo Hotel Birmingham

Basic but clean!

from shoppergalGlasgow
I booked via Octopus.com - and did get a very good rate - half the normal room rate.
I arrived from New Street during rush hour traffic - hotel is a short ride from station (5-10mins) but as busy route from town, I was caught up in traffic - understandable though.
Arrived at hotel and reception staff was very nice a very helpful.
Reception is right beside bar area and restaurant - well used space. There is a non-smoking / quiet room just off reception.

Room was on ground floor and VERY basic but also very clean. Small and compact, ideal for 1 night stay but was a bit dark and cold. Hotel is more like a motel idea, or a very old fashioned butlins!

Location - ok - TGI friday's directly opposite, as are some other pubs and restaurants - only 5 min taxi ride to busy town.

Was quite nosiey at night - lots of young lads, maybe coming back from pub/clubs! However was very noisey in morning, lots of hustle and bustle, from housekeeping knocking on doors to other guests shouting in car park. Noise started aroun 7ish - so if you are looking for a lie in - take ear plugs.

I didnt make breakfast but was certainly busy enough.

Our bed was horrific, needs replaced - was sinking in the middle! Which led to restless night.

Overall, its not great but if you are on a budget its fine.

I wouldnt stay again, but thats personal choice.

Birmingham itself is a great place for shopping and nightlife!

Bit tatty but clean and good food

from HannahTLeeds
Hotel is rather tatty and showing its age i.e. decor is dated and wood bashed on corners (one of the rooms had a sticker on it with the room number because the original had obviously fallen off).

This said it is very clean and comftable, the beds are a bit on the small side but rooms are of a very good size.

The breakfast was standard fare and the staff were generally very helpful and polite. I was attending a course at the hotel and the lunch that they laid on was very good indeed. They obviously have a chef with a bit of flare because they had produced some very tasty food.

Easter break

from Sc0ttylass
Stayed at the Apollo from Easter Sunday till Tues 10/04. Stayed with son, aged 9, and as I had read mixed reviews on this and other websites was a bit aprehensive. I had nothing to worry about.

The hotel looks a bit dated from the outside and the rooms are separate from the main hotel but are very secure as you need your door pass for both lift and stair access. I would always ask for a 1st or 2nd floor room as the ground floor rooms open out onto the car park and not sure I would have felt as safe. Car parking is ample and as you park between the accommodation blocks it means your car is away from the main road area.
The reception, bar and dining areas are very modern looking but this wasn't conveyed in the room we stayed in but on saying that the room was clean and tidy and was sufficient for our needs as we were visiting Drayton Manor Theme Park and were out for the whole day. The breakfast was excellant and plenty of it, only negative thing to say is that you are served cups of tea/coffe and not left a pot for your own use.

The hotel is across the road from TGI Fridays which is convient and next door to an ASK restaurant. We used TGI Fridays and found them to be very friendly both nighst we went there.

This hotel is in a great location for Birmingham city centre and surrounding attractions.

Would definately use this hotel again.

Better than it looks from the outside

from JoHoBolton
Stayed at the Thistle on Monday and at the Apollo on Wednesday. Both on Hagley Road. The Apollo slightly has the edge because of the value £46 for Bed and Breakfast. The room was like a small suite. Car parking area has security cameras. Dont visit TGI Fridays across the road (that's another story). Better to walk 100 yards to the Chef and Brewer down Hagley Road. There is also an Italian Restaurant next to the Apollo.
I'd definitely stay here again.

Absolutely brilliant!!

from slmccormick2006
My husband and I booked this hotel at extremely short notice (the day we were arriving!) and it was actually the only hotel we could find in Birmingham with space as we would be staying over the valentines day period, so we were slightly worried about what we would find when we got there!

We were greeted by extremely friendly staff who were efficient and chatty, despite the hotel being very busy.

The Appolo has a very different layout than most hotels, its more like individual flats in a seperate building from the reception and restaurant but the layout was explained to us and we were given our keycards, which also control the lift to each seperate area (very secure!).

Our room was very clean, comfortable and cosy with t.v / tea & coffee / trouser press / internet and complimentary toiletries. Very comfortable beds, quiet during the night.
Bathroom was roomy, clean and the shower was brilliant! Very friendly and efficient housekeeping staff.

I actually became ill during our trip (through no fault of the hotel!!) and the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful. They advised us on doctors, extended our stay indefinately without any hassle over bill paying or room swapping, the manager himself took time to speak to my husband about the situation and was very very understanding.
This hotel provides room service during the evening but arranged for food to be prepared and wrapped so that we could bring it to our room during the day. (Food was lovely by the way!) and when we could manage to make it to the restaurant for the buffet breakfast (included in the room rate) it was delicious!!

I would have been surprised if we had recieved such understanding from a 5 star hotel and the Apollo made an otherways disasterous trip, actually quite enjoyable.

Overall - Hassle free hotel, great rates, great location, lovely staff, comfortable clean rooms, good food.

We would have absolutely no problem staying here again!!!
Very pleased!!

A little noisy !!

from stora
My daughter and I stayed for one night on the 1st Dec as part of a two day coach break to Worcester and Warwick.
Strange looking hotel with Rooms that are like flats outside opening onto walkways which gives way to people and delivery vehicles coming and going all night.
Room was clean , very small bathroom and poor water pressure for the shower-no bath.
Good breakfast, not much choice but cooked well and was topped up quite often but as the restaurant was busy ( far to small for size of hotel ) we were asked to finish our coffee and tea in the lounge so we got the feeling that it was all quite rushed.
Overall impression - really noisy and would not stay there aagain if given the choice.

Excellent Value for Money!

from sammysammy1980
We stayed for only one night and booked via [""]. We paid £35 for a twin and £50 for a family room (incl. breakfast). The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was nice with a good variety and the staff were very helpful especially the bar staff.

The hotel is located close to the city centre and has a number of restaurants within walking distance. I would definately use this hotel again.

Comfortable

from KeithH
Does look a bit odd from the road, and you should be prepared to turn around and walk back outside from the reception desk. But room was very comfortable, clean and spacious, good price, friendly staff. On a busy road which could be quite noisy with the window open, but lined with several nearby restaurants (eg ASK, TGIs, Chef+Brewer etc). Quite a way from the centre of town so you'll want to take a taxi.

£35

from bonsyde
I would not reccomend the Apollo for single women travelers, i would highly recomend it for stag nights and nights on the town. The location is perfect for the city, with plenty of buses passing the door saving on taxis and parking meters.

The rooms are more like motel style accommodation with the room doors easliy accessable by anyone, they dont feel the most secure, but they are clean and they do have everything you would expect to find in a budget hotel, and for £35 a room per night what really do you expect.

breakfast in the morning was a excellant self service hot buffett, in any other hotel you would pay for breakfast what we paid for the room at the apollo

Apollo not quite so good as the greek God!

from fudge
The Apollo was quite good to stay at but not the best. I was there for a 5 day period for work reasons and found it quite easily. There is ample off Road parking at the hotel, but beware the road (Hagley Road) does get busy if you are trying to get off or on to it the 'wrong way' during peak times.

The bathroom was satisfactory and clean, but the noise was quite bad if you opened the window for air or other reasons - the main road is very busy.

The room was clean, tidy but starting to look like it was in need of a 'fresh look' and updating from the 1990's furniture. The double beds were divan style and the matresses were too soft for my aged frame!

The rooms were secured by a card entry system, and entry to the roomswas by lift or stairs and these were accessed by card as well. DONT STAY ON THE LEFT OR RIGHT OF THE LIFT SHAFT as it is very noisy at night (one of my friends had to ask be moved!)

The food was nice and the eating area was clean and tidy. The staff were happy to be asked any question but unfortunately lacked 'sparkle', a going through the motions sort of approach! Still, am I ever at my best early in the morning... I guess not!

Would I stay there again? Not unless my boss is picking up the bill.

Top Local Tips for Birmingham

Hagley Road Try the pubs that serve food in the area rather than the option of eating in the hotel. The Chef and Brewer on Hagley Road is good.

Roads and motorways!! Ensure you have either Sat Nav or good route instructions and navigator as the roads can be very confusing.

How Birmingham has changed!! I have lived in france for 30 years and Birmingham has really changed in that time. After visiting the city this time over , I have nothing but admiration for all the renovation that has gone on and the layout of the city centre which is very attractive. We found it clean and the mix of old and modern harmonizes very well . There was a jazz festival on when we were there ( 14th to 18th july) and the centre was buzzing with good music everywhere. The canals are lovely and there are lots of designer shops as well as the more traditional stores. Lots of eating places to choose from with food from all ovezr the world.
