What a lovely Hotel! The previous reviewer missed out on a special time, he should always regret the day that he threw his toys out of his pram about the parking!!

The staff, the location, the facilities and the atmosphere were all just amazing!!

They looked after us from start to finish and I will always judge wherever I stay in the future against this lovely hotel.

Do yourselves a favour and GO!!

Excellent location

We stayed for one night in this perfectly situated hotel. The room was really nice with a very large bathroom. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. Some of the decor is a bit tatty and could do with an overhaul and we felt that the bar/cafe could have been a bit more cosy/comfortable, but overall a very nice hotel that we would visit again.

Great Value

We booked on the Internet and got a very resonable price for a hotel in Bath so central..... So we weren't expecting much....Was very pleasantly surprised. Huge room, lovely decor, and a lovely view into the square. Bathroom was lovely. Staff were as expected in a large hotel chain..... polite but not much else! and breakfast was fine. I expect if you were paying full price you would expect more...... but we were impressed and would return. Recommend booking on line.

As previously commented, the location is indeed ideal. And the facade is also very impressive. And it's air-conditioned.
However, I wouldn't go much further than that with the compliments.

We had a room in the "new" wing, and if new means done in the last 20 years then it was very nice. They decor and furnishings seemed fairly similar to the old wing from what I could see.

To sum up my main concerns: huge crack in the sink, dirty toilet, mistakes with my bill (overcharge for wine, charge for car park I didn't use), fairly miserable staff, and finally breakfast - a shambolic affair.
Not sure where to start - a 20 minute wait for tea/coffee/toast, a badly stocked buffet, a supervisor being openly hostile to some of his staff, and as for the cooked food - well, there was a section of the menu that proclaimed "from the kitchen:" - maybe in other macdonald hotels, not in this one - a vat of bacon, sausages, etc and just fried eggs as part of the buffet. And should you want a different type of egg, or if you're feeling particularly brave, haddock&poached egg as I did then good luck.
10 mins to get someones attention and 25 mins after ordering I got a blatantly cooked from frozen chunk of haddock and a poached egg that made me gag it was so vinegary. But then I guess the chef isn't getting much practice at his poached eggs.
For £12.95 I expect a bit more than that.

Would I recommend this hotel? Not if you want breakfast in the morning!

Fine location, and air conditioned

We arrived at 11:00 a.m. not expecting to be ble to do anything more than store our luggage, but were able to check into our room immediately. We were there during a major heat wave so the air conditioning was welcome at the end of each day. The decor in the hallways is a bit run down, but our room was fine and the staff very friendly and helpful. Very central location to the heart of the old city.

Location and character

This hotel is located within walking distance of everything in central Bath. It is full of character, squeaky floor boards through out!! We arrived very late in the evening and had a good and helpful reception. The rooms are not uniform boxes, but quirky!! We were upgraded to a suite which was a pleasant surprise. The breakfast was excellent in a lovely dining room. We had a lovely weekend break. There is a small carpark behind the hotel, which is a bonus with the problems of parking in Bath. I would recommend this hotel.

Great location, good value three star hotel

The hotel is in an excellent location - easy walking distance to all major attractions.

We arrived early, and were pleased with the friendly staff, who took care of our luggage, and let us check in two hours early.

The rooms were neutrally decorated, clean, and comfortable - consistent with three stars, but most of the hotel could do with a lick of paint - especially the swirly carpets in the main corridors.

However, we got a good deal from lastminute, and had dinner and breakfast included. Dinner was excellent - I am vegetarian, and there was a good choice. The restaurant is attractive, and has a resident pianist. I was impressed.

I would recommend it as a good value three star. It's not the place for high class luxury, but for a short break on a reasonable budget, it's ideal.

perfectly placed but looking jaded

My wife and I stayed for a two night short break with dinner included.

Our first impressions were of a character hotel well placed in a very fashinable area of central Bath. However we found the decor of this hotel in great need of redecoration both in many public areas and probably many bedrooms. Paintwork and soft furnishings in our bedroom and the hotel sitting area were well overdue attention. Our bedroom carpet was stained and several seats in the public area were jaded or marked. Our bedroom was a small attic type room, rather camped . Although we complained about a broken window blind this was returned unmended during our stay. By comparison, the dining room was large and the food on our first night was excellent. We did however cancel our meal booking on the second night as no alternative vegetarian dish was available. Levels of service in general were adequate.

Given the cost and class of this populatr hotel , we feel the Mcdonald group need to be less complacent and give this hotel the attention it derserves,

We would nt recommend this hotel until improvements are made.

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting

I can understand the comments from previous guests with regards to certain aspects of the decor. No, pristine it isn't...it may need the odd lick of paint and a few new carpets. It is clean, it does have bags of character, a central location, helpful, friendly staff and very good food. The breakfast was of the help yourself to full English, cereal, continental, kipper and porridgey variety, yummmm. My husband and I stayed in one of the four poster rooms. There were delightful views over Queen Square. The pillows were the best I have ever had in a hotel, not a hint of concrete!! All in all, the good far outweighed the bad and I would both stay in The Francis again and recommend it to my friends.

Location, location, location

My wife and I stayed here for only one night in early February, 2005 and, while it certainly ain't the Plaza or the Ritz, it's comfortable, clean and close to whatever you want to do in Bath. Our rate was good and included room service breakfast. There's no doubt that a new coat of paint here and there would do wonders but you really can't go wrong here if you're looking for a comfortable place to rest your head while touring Bath. Nice people, considerate service, and parking!!! Plenty of good restaurants are within just a few blocks' walk. A good value, if not luxurious.

We stayed at The Francis Hotel in Bath for one night B&B plus dinner. The hotel is in a very good location for sightseeing. The interior could do with updating, our room was small but cosy! The bathroom was clean but the room was in need of some TLC. Dinner was very good as was breakfast - help yourself buffet style. Check-in/out was quick and efficient. Recommended for a one night stay.

Top Local Tips for Bath

Tour buses As cheesy as you might feel getting on one of the open-top double decker tourist buses, they are actually a great way to get perspective on Bath, a good history and of course the ability to get on and off when you feel like...we think they are pretty good value

GREAT RESTAURANT! The Hole in the Wall is a lovely restaurant on George Street, 5 mins walk from The Francis Hotel. Good service, lovely food and romantic interior. We paid £74 (with a glass of wine) for two of us but was worth every penny. My steak was a little underdone so sent it back to be cooked a bit more and the chef offered us 2 free side dishes to say sorry. Not at all necessary and was much appreciated.
