Historical Traveller Reviews of Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel

from stevisan
I booked a last minute deal at this hotel, which was an excellent discount. Found everything about the hotel superb - a large room, with huge comfortable bed. Beautiful building and grounds, and friendly staff. Good location within walking distance from town. Meals were very expensive, but good, and I found the service fine. Facilities including the pool, sauna etc were great and not too busy. Would definitely stay again.

5 star Hotel - 2 star Service!!

from JVWilliams
The Bath Spa Hotel is a 5 star hotel only because the facilites tick the boxes ie. hair dryer and trouser press in the rooms and the prices they charge!! The service was very poor when my wife and I stayed there, almost laughable. The day we left, there we 3 others couples sitting in the lounge voicing their compalints with the hotel managers!! The rooms are comfortable, if not tired, hence the 10 million refurb they are doing this year. The Velore restaurant was the worst experience for us. Where do I start? We waited far too long to order, then to be told after ordering that a dish was not available. The food was OK, although we waited an hour and a half before getting our main course and had almost lost interest by then. Breakfast in the morning was more of the same, although this time, cold cooked breakfasts added to the waiting time!
My wife and I also took it in turns during our stay whilst in the lounge to go off and find some one to serve us afternoon tea, evening drinks, morning coffee, not very 5 star!
To be fair all our complaints were listened too and dealt with accordingly and we have been invited back at their expense. Finally, watch out for the discretionary service charge added to everything that you request from anywhere in the hotel, which is slightly annoying when there is none!!

Very nice but a little dated...

Not a 5 star hotel but absolutely lovely.
Would definitely recommend the restaurant (Vellore) - both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Spa and hotel surroundings are beautiful.

The only thing I would criticise are the rooms - look as if they could do with a revamp. Nice big bathroom, however, stains on carpet, chipped glasses to drink from. Everything just seems a bit worn and dated. CD player in room with CD's nice touch!

Altogether would definitely go again, but lets say the pictures on the website are cleverly done. Let's see how the refurbishment works out at the end of the year!

Great traditional Hotel

from ukgolf
I have recently returned from the stay at the Bath Spa Hotel and can say that we found the hotel to be excellent. After reading some of the reviews, I was a little concerned about the service question, but found that if you treat the staff with respect, great service followed.

Service was a little slow by American standards at breakfast, but was much in keeping with the relaxed speed of unhurried service one finds in Europe. We did not eat dinner in the main restaurant, having decided that the less formal setting of the Alfresco restaurant and its menu more suited our taste. The Restaurant Manager was excellent and when the house wine was not available, quickly offered an alternative of our choice at the same low price and took time to review the wines on offer.

The rooms were excellent, the recreational facilities great and the location was perfect - walking distance to the center of Bath and yet away from the traffic noise.

You can stay here with confidence.

Never again.....

We held a conference event in the Bath Spa hotel and were very disappointed with their service. This certainly is not a 5* hotel and every one of our participants had a bad experience in one way or another. I would definitely not recommend this hotel for their conference services or restaurant menu (very poor veggie selection) and the staff were also unhelpful and unfriendly with exception of the porters.

Loved the Bath Spa

from A TripAdvisor Member
I agree that this is more a 4 star than a 5 star hotel however we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would stay again. Our room was large, front facing and very clean, the bed was king size and extremely comfortable!
We found the staff friendly and helpful - especially Pepe the concierge.

Lovely walk through the gardens into Bath.

Not worth the money

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here at great expense for my wedding anniversary. Very underwhelmed at everything from service, food, rooms, gardens. It's really not worth the money they charge. If you want to stay somewhere nice in Bath, stay at the Royal Crescent which is expensive, but worth it.

A total rip-off.

We managed to find an internet deal via the Hotels own web-site, even the deal was very expensive but we booked anyway because we thought it would be an special five star experience. Our room was dull and had seen better days and the bathroom was definitely due for a re-vamp. The Vellore Restaurant was so dated I thought I was in a time warp and not a pleasant one at that. The waiters were taking our plates almost before we had finished each course. I would definitely look elsewhere and save your money a total rip off. I have stayed in better four star Hotels.

t agree with the negative reviews

from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't agree with the negative reviews, My Wife and I stayed 5 days and and would gladly come back again.

Rooms are large, and free of mold and allergens. Important in England.

Breakfast was wonderful (loved the fried bread) if included in the room rate. not worth 17 pounds.

Fitness room is top notch, I would love it if every hotel was half as well equipped.

Large grounds, short taxi ride to the city.

Restaurant is very pricey, but then so is everything in Bath.

I wouldn't consider it a 5 star hotel, but it is above average.

Well worth a romantic weekend away

Excellent in every way

from prospero1b
Palatial hotel about 15 minutes' pleasant walk from Bath city centre. 7 acres of beautiful, mature gardens. Huge car park. Very friendly staff.
Bedrooms in the original building have high ceilings and tasteful furnishings, whilst those in the modern extension are slightly larger and equally comfortable. Impressive, well kept public rooms. Two restaurants, the Vellore in the domed former ballroom and the more intimate Alfresco in a charming long gallery, decorated with murals and overlooking the gardens. Excellent cuisine. Spa, swimming pool, gym and tennis courts. High standards of housekeeping. All in all, a delightful, quality property. Very highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for Bath

Great place to eat I was lucky to have a friend in Bath recommend his local for dinner. It was lovely and we would not have thought to go there with out his recommendation. We went to the King William on Thomas Street.

Go to Las Iguanas for a nice meal in a lively setting Las iguanas is a latin american restaurant that serves all type if south american food - it was gorgoues!

Lots of stags and hens Bath is a beautiful city, a pleasure to stroll around. Although be warned weekends are full of stag and hen parties. Made us appreciate each other all the more though.
