Poor, Poor, Poor!!from bluemingoodbloke
First surprise is when you arrive - No car park and so a quick visit to reception (while you park in the disabled bays - see below as this may be risky) to find out where to park and you are offered a map (that is how complicated it is) - it is also about 1/3 to 1/2 a mile away.
While I do not agree with the concept, I have stayed at 2 Hiltons in the UK recently which charge for residents parking, but they were on site. This was ridiculous - £6 to park somewhere that the characters in 'Lost' would have wanted a guide to take them to.
It is obvious why this was not advertised on the website, nor the booking, (but it is highlighted on an A4 piece of paper in the lifts - really helpful if the lift was the first thing you drove your car into when you arrived) but to be honest I would still have stayed there if they had come clean - I was more p'd off by the assumption that omission of information was ok.
So now you trek back to the hotel, which it has to be said is in a great location in the centre of town.............but.......you are greeted by a receptionist who needs a shave and a new uniform........ok, I've seen worse, but it is far from impressive.
If you are in the Hilton HHonors programme (even on Gold) don't expect any priviliges, nor an invite to book dinner (even when it is included), nor an upgrade, nor in fact any recognition at all.
Your room, a double deluxe is likely to be two twin beds pushed together.
Don't under any circumstances ask the restuarant staff if you can reserve a table by the window as it is a special occasion, (a refusal can often offend, and it did) nor request a time that suits you, as you will be directed to a time which suits the restuarant, even though it may be midweek and the place is about as busy as a McDonalds adjacent to a Vegetarian convention.
Do order your wine the day before you arrive, in order that you do not need to prompt the waiter that you actually ordered a bottle and you have now actually finished your starter!
Now the good bit...........this is what gets it the one star.......the main course (Filet Mignon at an extra charge) was actually excellent.
But don't get too excited.....any additional drinks arrive with the same urgency as the wine, and the icing on the cake comes when you are presented with the bill and you find you have been charged for the meal even though it is included on your package!
Maybe I could accept they had a problem with the car park, maybe I could accept the receptionist was having a bad day and he had been run over by a truck before he came to work, maybe I could accept that they also had issues with staffing in the restuarant,.................what I cannot accept is that at no time did the staff apologise for anything and therefore I have to assume that the above, to them, is normal.
Perhaps they need to visit other Hiltons in the UK, in particular Glasgow, which is excellent!

we decided to go to the hilton as this is a well known group.
I booked on the phone with me asking for a double room the lady on the phone said no double rooms left only double luxury rooms so i booked that.
she then told me the swimming pool was no longer in use and there was a extra £10 to park in there hotel car park.
when we arrived and was told it was now £25 a night to park so we parked 10 mins away across town for £6 a night.
The room was nice and clean with plenty of clean towls and bed sheets nice and clean but the view out of the window was of a flat roof and nothing else very dissapointing. beakfast was included and was very nicewith a choice of full english, cereals, fruit, etc.
on way back from breakfast the lifts broke down with people stuck in so we had to walk up the stairs.
the hotel is in good location and walking distance to everything.
overall the hotel was ok but not worth the price for half the price we could of stayed in plenty of other hotels which were clean and just as nice.
next time i will look at reveiws before i book again.
Great expectations - big disappointment !from A TripAdvisor Member
After taking up the issue with a very helpful receptionist we were moved to a standard twin room which, although less spacious and luxurious, had a beautiful view of the river.
We found the range of television channels to be very limited for a hotel within such a well known group and it was frustrating to have to pay for parking in a pubic car park 10 minutes walk away from the hotel.
The hotel restaurant was good although the menu was rather limited.
All in all we would probably stay in another Hilton again but not this one.
Never againfrom coolmint
My second visit was via the Hilton web site and was a “Hilton Special” two nights in a compact room with B&B and dinner on the first night. I was at the time of booking asked if I would like to upgrade the room at an extra cost, I declined, and this was an awful mistake!
The room was very “compact” as were the walls I continually throughout the night heard children screaming, couples arguing and people coming and going. The room also looked out over the main street, another source of noise to add to this awful stay at the Hilton. I did not take the “free” dinner on the first night as the dinning room again looked like a bun fight.
I went early for breakfast the next morning, which seemed to startle the staff that anyone should turn up when the breakfast room was due to open! No bun fights though and lots of choice including haggis for breakfast, staff surly, and food ok.
I booked out that morning, when informed by the receptionist that I was due and had paid for another night, I informed her I enjoy sleeping when I go to bed, and the Hilton is not the place for this if you take one of the “special” deals.
My only advice to others taking any deal is take the upgrade and pay the real price for staying here, otherwise you will have wished you stayed at home slept well, and breakfasted in a quiet peaceful manner…quiet and peaceful, these two words could never be used when considering the Hilton.
Never Again !!from Mutterley
s like a saunafrom Surf-Chick
The breakfasts are good, however I have had to wait for up to 10 minutes just to be seated (and this is at 7.30am before the tourists come for breakfast), although plenty of tables were vacant. Quite frustrating if you are in a bit of a rush to get to work.
I have only had dinner in the restaurant once, it was very tasty but definately overpriced - you can do much better in town, only about 2 minutes walk away.
Be aware that they now do not have any car parking at the hotel - in the past you were allowed to park in the supermarket carpark at a reduced rate of £9 for the night, this has now stopped and you are fined an additional £25 for staying in that carpark overnight on top of your hourly rate. There are about 20 spaces in a pay and display carpark next door, however this is frequently full and a hangout for some "down and outs", if I had a nice/expensive car I would not leave it there.
Staff do try their hardest here and I really can't fault them, but management need help them by putting more staff on in the restaurant at meal times and making the parking situation a little clearer (there is a tiny note in the lift, that is all). If I could, I would not stay here during the summer months unless you are partial to sleeping in a sauna.
Would not stay there again!from A TripAdvisor Member
We arrived for my husband's birthday and I was wanting the 2 days away to be bliss for him - unfortunately we did not find that the hotel achieved this.
The staff were ok, but seemed to lack a knowledge of their procedures.
The location of the hotel is great - but, with all the beautiful old buildings in Bath, this hotel sticks out like a sore thumb!
I would definately not recommend it and would definately not return.
Absolutely disgusting - HILTON, my backside it is!from A TripAdvisor Member
This is the worst Hilton to bear the name! It starts right from the time you enter the hotel - its just not up to standard, shabby fittings and a finish that leaves a lot to be desired.
The rooms are OK sizewise but with aircon that is mediocre, you need the window open - if you overlook the front bad luck - you'll be opposite a really noisy pub and main road, out the back, the river.
The restaurant is variable - on a set package the menu is dire. The breakfasts are very variable, one morning OK at best, the worst, you'll be rushing to the loo as its way too greasy!
Here's the biggy, for all you drivers - NO FREE CAR PARKING ANYMORE - it ended on the 1st August 2005. The nearest, cheap car park is at least a 10 minute walk, or you can risk a £90 'fine' and park on the double yellows in the drop off zone outside the hotel. Private firm runs it, so be warned.
Avoid - I'm sure there are much better places in Bath, or just outside to stay!

Booked a twin room with the hope of a double. The receptionist informed us that they had no double rooms but we could upgrade for a small charge.
We did upgrade and what a room it was, the bed was huge, the room was spacious and we had an excellent view of the River Avon.
We had breakfast and one evening meal included in our package. The food was great and the staff very helpful and friendly.
I would certainly recommend the Hilton Bath City as a great place to stay.

Top Local Tips for Bath
walk & bus Take your comfy shoes ro make the most of this city & explore the streets & alleyways. Take a bus tour, you see loads, forget most of it & get a sit down.
Going out for Food? If you're American and miss your Mexican, I throughly recommend Las Iguanas near the Theatre. If you fancy an Indian Curry, then I'd recommend the Eastern Eye Tandoori over the Rajpoot.
Roman Baths Very interesting, get there early though
