Arrived by train and found the hotel located just up the road, it is located right in the heart of the city close to the shops, Roman Baths and you guessed it the Abbey. Staff are extremley friendly and made us feel right at home. Ate out most nights because there is such a huge selection right on the doorstep

Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Abbey Hotel

Clean, central, friendly staff, would stay again

from linzijopson
We booked this hotel through late rooms and managed to get it for £80 per night for a twin room.

After reading the previous reviews we were a little apprehensive about staying here but our initial feeling was wrong. The staff were ever so friendly and couldn't do enough to help with any requests.

The Rooms
We were placed in the basement of the hotel which was a suite (I think that this is due to them not having any other twin rooms!), which was fantastic, sofas, two single beds and one double, shower, separate bath and plenty of space and clothing space.

The hotel seems to have undergone a refurbishment, a previous review stated that you had room keys but this has changed, they have the key card entrance now.

The location
It is very central and you are less than 5 mins from the station (Bath spa) and the Cathedral.
Outside of the hotel is an open square with a fountain along with a couple of shops and there is a pub across the road. (Selling good food!)

We only ate breakfast in the hotel, beware of the plates, they are stiflingly hot!! the food was good. All of the usual continental - cereals, bread, yogurts, fresh fruit salads, coffee/tea - - along with the cooked breakfast options. We enjoyed all of the breakfasts.

Some guests were complaining about noise in there room from the pub across the road, but we were in the front of the hotel (facing the pub) and it didn't bother us, we also kept our window open all of the time.

There are a lot of americans who use this hotel (probably to stick with the best western american brand!) and most of the hotels maids seem to be exchange students but they are all friendly.

Due to the hot weather we asked at the bar for two glasses of ice, they managed to go one better by providing us with two glasses and a champagne chiller bucket full of ice!

I would definitely recommend this hotel along with the staff.

Very poor

I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

It is overpriced and the rooms are very small and in dire need of refurbishment. The mattress should have been thrown out years ago and the expel-air in the bathroom was not working along with numerous light bulbs and other wonky fixtures and fitting.

There was a dead seagull outside our window that was rotting away along with cigarette butts and beer cans and other bits of decaying matter.

The whole place is rundown and the staff don't help matters as they don't seem to be bothered about making your stay a pleasurable one and they can barely manage a smile.

We will not use the Best Western chain of hotels again.

Not great, but convenient

from AndreaOH
I would give this hotel 2 stars. The location is GREAT and the breakfast OK, but the rooms are dated, beds are small and uncomfortable. At £100 a night, you're paying for location. We had to change rooms because our first was dirty and very small (room 5, I think?). The room we moved to was better, bigger, but facing a court yard with resident population of cooing birds. Overall, though, bath is a lovely city and worth a visit. You won't need to stay in the hotel long. Vegetarians - check out the veg restaurant a few doors down from this hotel. Food is pricey, but lovely!

OK but overpriced

from VikingMen
Good points: location (pub next door has good food), staff efficient (though rather unfriendly), rooms are spacious, good continental breakfast selection

Bad points: parking (not really the hotel's fault, but a nightmare nonetheless), no healthy options for cooked breakfast, overpriced

NB the hotel has no car park and the nearby Mavers Street car park is often totally full until after 4pm. I had to park further away and move the car after 4pm to the nearer car park.

Think twice before booking

from OnIslandTime
Planning a long weekend, we booked through the US Best Western website, specifically requesting a room in the back to avoid the noise of the bars out front. We reconfirmed by phone a week before travel. When we arrived, they had no record of our reservation and tried to turn us away. We produced a copy of our confirmation and they scrambled to find us a room. The room we were given was roughly the size of a closet in the front of the hotel. It contained a cabinet, a desk/bureau with drawer panels missing, and a bed that was a size between twin and full, and hard as a rock. The location of the hotel is perfect, but after checking in, we walked down the street and found another hotel (Parade Park) with rooms available. After looking at the rooms there, we decided to change hotels.

For your reference, we've done a lot of travel and have often stayed at Comfort Suites/Holiday Inn type accomodations when necessary. Often, these are okay basic accomodations. The Best Western Abbey does not even come close to that level. Other than location, based on the room we were given, i wouldn't recommend this hote!

Beat all expectations

from carolinewalsh
My husband and I booked a short-break holiday at a very special rate in the Abbey, expecting it to be a typical tourist hotel, nothing special but a good value place to stay.

How wrong we were. The staff were so helpful from the moment we walked in that we felt totally welcome and cosseted.

We were told we were the first to stay in a newly-refurbished room and it was so comfortable that I have no reason to doubt this, with a clean, lovely bathroom and beautifully decorated.

Only niggle it was far too hot for our taste -- but then what hotel in the middle of winter isn't.

Breakfast was also very nice and relaxed (and included in price) with plenty of choice. Again, one niggle, my bacon was crispy to the point of cremation, but that is a minor point and certainly didn't stop us eating far too much!

One final point, how lovely to find a hotel that still gives you an old-fashioned proper key to your room rather than a card which, nine times out of 10 (perhaps it's us) fails to open the door, no matter which way up you try to use it or to fool it by going very slowly or sweeping it through at the speed of light.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a break right in the heart of this beautiful city.

from TheGP
Staying at this hotel was a distinctly underwhelming experience. It's main good aspect is it's location, on the doorstep of the abbey for easy access to all the town. On the downside, this means parking is a nightmare.

In the hotel itself, my room was quite tatty - a few little things didn't work, and for the price, I would have expected a something a little better.

The staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was cooked and was OK. All in all, an OK hotel, but nothing to write home about.

Agree re Great Location

from Leddin
Cannot beat the location, just 50 metres from the Baths etc.and maybe 500 metres from the rail station.

Breakfast good and hot. Had haddock with egg for the first time! Full English was also good. At CDN$250 a bit rich for my pocket...and found Travelodge up a hill for 26 quid (on a special) which had no worthwhile breakfast but there is a great spot just across the road.

Room fine (cozy) but had to run around under the shower to get wet.

If staying at this hotel, strongly recommend walking over to the Baths for the free walking tour run by the council. Every day at 1030 and some days in the p.m. too. Very knowledgeable guides who have great stuff to point out over 2 hours.

Excellent Location - Poor Decor

from albertmews8
I stayed here for a weekend in September. I have to say that the location is excellent. Most of the major sights are very nearby. The interior of the rooms was less pleasing, but the competitive price more than made up for this. The breakfast was pretty good and the staff on the reception were helpful. So ... if you are looking for an affordable well located hotel, this is a good choice. If luxury and interiors are important, give this a miss.

Great Location, Loved the Breakfast

from A TripAdvisor Member
We arrived in Bath after a long flight and train ride. We were not disappointed in the Bath Abbey! Everything was clean and comfortable. The desk staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel has an excellent location, right around the corner from the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey and steps from where the tour buses start. Would definitely stay there again. Breakfast was delicious.

Top Local Tips for Bath

Thermae Bath Spa Thermae Bath Spa is a day spa where you can bathe in the warm, natural mineral-rich waters and choose from an excellent range of spa treatments. There are stunning views from the rooftop pool overlooking the World Heritage city of Bath and its surroundings.

How to save 10% at the Roman Baths If you take the open-top tour bus your ticket price is valid for 24 hours (or it may have been 48 hours - we heard two different versions) - which means you can go on the City tour one day, then the 'Skyline' tour the next day. In addition your ticket gives you 10% off the entrance price for the Roman Baths, the Jayne Austen centre, the Georgian House and other attractions.
