Clean, central, friendly staff, would stay again
from linzijopsonAfter reading the previous reviews we were a little apprehensive about staying here but our initial feeling was wrong. The staff were ever so friendly and couldn't do enough to help with any requests.
The Rooms
We were placed in the basement of the hotel which was a suite (I think that this is due to them not having any other twin rooms!), which was fantastic, sofas, two single beds and one double, shower, separate bath and plenty of space and clothing space.
The hotel seems to have undergone a refurbishment, a previous review stated that you had room keys but this has changed, they have the key card entrance now.
The location
It is very central and you are less than 5 mins from the station (Bath spa) and the Cathedral.
Outside of the hotel is an open square with a fountain along with a couple of shops and there is a pub across the road. (Selling good food!)
Food
We only ate breakfast in the hotel, beware of the plates, they are stiflingly hot!! the food was good. All of the usual continental - cereals, bread, yogurts, fresh fruit salads, coffee/tea - - along with the cooked breakfast options. We enjoyed all of the breakfasts.
Some guests were complaining about noise in there room from the pub across the road, but we were in the front of the hotel (facing the pub) and it didn't bother us, we also kept our window open all of the time.
There are a lot of americans who use this hotel (probably to stick with the best western american brand!) and most of the hotels maids seem to be exchange students but they are all friendly.
Due to the hot weather we asked at the bar for two glasses of ice, they managed to go one better by providing us with two glasses and a champagne chiller bucket full of ice!
I would definitely recommend this hotel along with the staff.
Very poor
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt is overpriced and the rooms are very small and in dire need of refurbishment. The mattress should have been thrown out years ago and the expel-air in the bathroom was not working along with numerous light bulbs and other wonky fixtures and fitting.
There was a dead seagull outside our window that was rotting away along with cigarette butts and beer cans and other bits of decaying matter.
The whole place is rundown and the staff don't help matters as they don't seem to be bothered about making your stay a pleasurable one and they can barely manage a smile.
We will not use the Best Western chain of hotels again.
Not great, but convenient
from AndreaOHOK but overpriced
from VikingMenBad points: parking (not really the hotel's fault, but a nightmare nonetheless), no healthy options for cooked breakfast, overpriced
NB the hotel has no car park and the nearby Mavers Street car park is often totally full until after 4pm. I had to park further away and move the car after 4pm to the nearer car park.
Think twice before booking
from OnIslandTimeFor your reference, we've done a lot of travel and have often stayed at Comfort Suites/Holiday Inn type accomodations when necessary. Often, these are okay basic accomodations. The Best Western Abbey does not even come close to that level. Other than location, based on the room we were given, i wouldn't recommend this hote!
Beat all expectations
from carolinewalshHow wrong we were. The staff were so helpful from the moment we walked in that we felt totally welcome and cosseted.
We were told we were the first to stay in a newly-refurbished room and it was so comfortable that I have no reason to doubt this, with a clean, lovely bathroom and beautifully decorated.
Only niggle it was far too hot for our taste -- but then what hotel in the middle of winter isn't.
Breakfast was also very nice and relaxed (and included in price) with plenty of choice. Again, one niggle, my bacon was crispy to the point of cremation, but that is a minor point and certainly didn't stop us eating far too much!
One final point, how lovely to find a hotel that still gives you an old-fashioned proper key to your room rather than a card which, nine times out of 10 (perhaps it's us) fails to open the door, no matter which way up you try to use it or to fool it by going very slowly or sweeping it through at the speed of light.
All in all, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a break right in the heart of this beautiful city.
Underwhelmed
from TheGPIn the hotel itself, my room was quite tatty - a few little things didn't work, and for the price, I would have expected a something a little better.
The staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was cooked and was OK. All in all, an OK hotel, but nothing to write home about.
Agree re Great Location
from LeddinBreakfast good and hot. Had haddock with egg for the first time! Full English was also good. At CDN$250 a bit rich for my pocket...and found Travelodge up a hill for 26 quid (on a special) which had no worthwhile breakfast but there is a great spot just across the road.
Room fine (cozy) but had to run around under the shower to get wet.
If staying at this hotel, strongly recommend walking over to the Baths for the free walking tour run by the council. Every day at 1030 and some days in the p.m. too. Very knowledgeable guides who have great stuff to point out over 2 hours.
Excellent Location - Poor Decor

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Bath
Thermae Bath Spa Thermae Bath Spa is a day spa where you can bathe in the warm, natural mineral-rich waters and choose from an excellent range of spa treatments. There are stunning views from the rooftop pool overlooking the World Heritage city of Bath and its surroundings.
How to save 10% at the Roman Baths If you take the open-top tour bus your ticket price is valid for 24 hours (or it may have been 48 hours - we heard two different versions) - which means you can go on the City tour one day, then the 'Skyline' tour the next day. In addition your ticket gives you 10% off the entrance price for the Roman Baths, the Jayne Austen centre, the Georgian House and other attractions.
