Made to feel unwelcome as soon as we arrived; very dirty room, no alarm clock or radio, the mattress was just a whole load of springs; hotel understaffed, awful meal - so bad we had only the starter. When we went for breakfast the waitress said to me "Tell your Mrs she needs to move tables". There was no fruit juice. None of the pepper mills had any pepper in them. We ordered scrambled egg with smoked salmon, which came as just scrambled egg on unbuttered toast; this was rectified by throwing some smoked salmon trimmings (the brown bits) on our plates. When we left the manager refused to tell me his name ("Mind your own business"), accused us of going away with the intention of complaining and not enjoying ourselves and was extremely rude, aggressive asnd arrogant. Without doubt the worst place I and we have ever stayed in!

Great location, good dinners & breakfasts, good service though very down-to-earth. Certainly the rooms are tired & in need of some DIY but carpets, bed linen & towels clean & plentiful, quiet & water hot. If you've a good sense of humour to cope with the eccentric management this is an acceptable option, especially as everywhere else will be full at short notice!

£52 bed and breakfast in four-poster bed can't be bad. Yes the building looks a little tired, but inside, although dated, it was clean and tidy. There was a smell, but it was the welcoming one of real fires burning in the public rooms. The staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was spotless with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was modern with everything working well. Our evening meal was served promptly, was very tasty, in spite of a party of 34 being in the main restaurant. Breakfast was very nice too, a proper hearty one, not some sort of designer snack.

All in all a very pleasant stay. I had read the other reviews after I had booked so was fairly worried when we arrived, but I really don't know what more anyone could expect from a small hotel in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales.

Oh, and by the way, we met the cleaner, and believe me, no specks of dust were going to get past her!

I wish I had looked at these reviews before staying at this place! The location was great but everything else was awful: the whole place (bars, bedrooms and lounge) looked liked it had not been cleaned properly in a long time and had a musty smell, the doors to some of the rooms and bathrooms would not close properly or were off the hinges. Some lights in the rooms did not work. The fried breakfast was the worst I have ever had - plentiful but full of grease. Their high chair did not have any straps and our 8 month old baby kept slipping down, plus it was covered in a black mould. Never again.

I will never come back to this crappy hotel again! I was treated like sh*t and I was feeling like I wasn't welcomed here.
IT WAS THE LAST TIME.
Only one men who seemed to be reliable person was Polish guy with American accent (leave this place if you will find something else, you don't deserve it).
PS. Thank you for your pitiable hospitality.

Our arrival appeared to be an annoyance to the man who checked us in. There was no greeting and no smile. This made us uncomfortable and ruined the stay before it had even started.
The room was quite small but very clean and comfortable. The sash window had been screwed shut which was annoying.
A previous reviewer mentioned the 'foreigners with a miniscule command of English'.
I found them polite and friendly, with a good level of English and were far more pleasant to deal with than an arrogant Yorkshireman.
We ate once in the evening and the food was quite good. Excellent pint of Theakstons bitter.
The breakfast was very good.
We would never return to this Hotel but will definately vist the Dales again.

Shortcomings

A well situated hotel with good prices but is spoilt by general inefficiency and poor organisation.

There did not seem to be an overall manager and the majority of the staff were foreign, with a miniscule command of English.

There were numerous little things that weren't right - e.g. shower in bedroom didn't work, bulbs were missing, and one had to ask for a lot of things (e.g. milk on breakfast table) which ought to have been available.

The central heating was switched off (this was late September). It was put on when I asked for this, but soon after (about 9pm) went off again and did not re-appear the next morning. There was a fan heater in the wardrobe; when I plugged this in it immediately burst into flames!

The bar and bar area had not been cleaned for months if not years, only 1 person expected to run the 2 bars/reception take food orders and be the waiter when food was ready.
The room we booked had been allocated to someone else and our alternative room was also filthy with enough dust to write your name in wallpaper hanging off the walls, the water leak above had stained the ceiling and walls.
The previous occupants' toothpaste was still in the drinking glass in the bathroom.
We had booked for alonger stay but left after 1 nights stay - enough was enough we will not be returning.
