Historical Traveller Reviews of The Swan Hotel

A good location

from jem5
We love Grasmere and the walking around the area is fantastic. This hotel was nice enough, but the bar prices were ridiculous. As our room was not ready on arrival we had a pot of tea costing £7! and no biscuit. The food was superb and the portions just right. Service in the restaurant was good and the log fires added to a lovely atmosphere. Our room was clean, but nothing special, with a view of the kitchen roof. If the prices were more reasonable I would return, however I feel it is overpriced.

A wonderful week!

My wife and I spent six nights B & B at The Swan to include our 18th Wedding Anniversary. We found the hotel extremely comfortable - 1 open log fire and 5 large gas fires in the bar and lounges. The hotel has loads of atmosphere - beamed and comfortable furniture. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times.
We would, and will, recommend this hotel to all our friends. It is situated very conveniently for walking down to the village and the various walks around.
All in all, a lovely hotel.

very good

Bit concerned to this hotel because of some reviews on Site. No need to be . Stayed over Christmas for 3 days. Chose one of the feature rooms which had a half poster bed. Room large and tastefully furnished with as seating area. Bathroom ok.
Main Hotel very nice well maintained.
All staff excellent pleasant helpful. Food in Hotel excellent.
All in all recomend the hotel.

t book it!!

What a huge disappointment!!!
My partner and I booked a double room at the Macdonald Swan Hotel. We opted for the dinner, bed and breakfast deal at a cost of £440.00 in total for the two nights. At this price (and having looked at the hotel website) we expected something special. This was my birthday weekend and we were looking forward to a bit of luxury. We could not have been more wrong.

First impressions were of a hotel that is in desperate need of a refurbishment. Our room was a long walk up and down stairs and through doors and along corridors with thread bare carpet, ancient pot plants and a musty smell. Our room was small (on a par with a mediocre B & B), the decor was dated and worn. We had a tiny portable TV, 4 channels and no remote control. There was a smell of paint (though no sign of an attempt to smarten the place up), the bathroom was tiny with cracked tiles.

Dinner was average, tiny portions and a hint of 'Fawty Towers' in the very uninspiring dining room. Again ,decor was worn, cobwebs in the corners and scruffy waiting staff. The cheapest bottle of wine was £20, which compared to £3.40 for a pint of beer & £5.95 for a large glass of wine in the hotel bar, was in hindsight quite reasonable. Unfortunately the wine glasses were gritty to the touch having been taken out of the dishwasher covered in bits of food. Staff were friendly and helpful although struggling to cope. We were offered someome else's starter several times and had difficulty making ourselves understood.

Breakfast was small with no vegetarian option. Over all our stay cost over £500 for two nights and it was really not worth half that. We saw some lovely B & B's in the local area and some hotels that seemed reasonably priced. Think VERY carefully before spending your money at the Macdonald Swan. You WILL regret it. I can't imagine anyone would make a return visit!!

Auful stay, had stayed 1 months prior and had a great time, this place is clearly under new management as it is sloppy, dirty and the staff are rude and unhelpful.

Great hotel for the Lake District

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stopped by chance for one night passing through the Lake District, and were extremly pleased with this hotel. We booked in on their special offer of dinner, bed & breakfast.
From entering we found all the staff friendly and courteous, The room was not large but clean & comfortable. The bathroom was of a good standard. The hospitality tray was excellent and included as well as the normal items, a bottle of sparkling water, still water and a half decanter of sherry.
The dinner menu was limited but contained an interesting variety of dishes and the quality could not be faulted. The only comment would make that service was a little too attentive.
Breakfast consisted of just about everything possible for any taste, including a wide range of fruits, cheeses, cold meats and cereals as well as the usual "full Enlish".
I would heartily reccomend this hotel for a base to see some of the most beautiful landscape in England.

Nearly a good hotel

from Butterworthp
Grasmere is really one of the most attractive locations in England. I had never been here before and stayed with my wife for three nights, 16th to 18th July 2004, with the aim of touring the lake district by car - it is central for this purpose. The hotel is 5- 10 mins. walk from the village and has the advantage of adequate parking, which other village hotels may not have.
The building and gardens are beautiful - pay extra for a garden room as the hotel fronts the main road. These overlook the gardens, which you can walk and sit in and are superb and well kept.
The room was of a good size and with good facilities and the room was clean. The décor however was a bit ‘tired’ and the beds were, in my opinion, past their best - being well worn.
The food was satisfactory - its worth booking the, good value, with-dinner option if staying for a few nights - the service is excellent and the dinner menu is quite imaginative and satisfying.

Annoying was the high bar prices – why do they do this – forcing, on principle, one to the local pub 30% cheaper?

Service generally was great, but check-in was an embarrassment – down to one individual who didn’t want to get off her backside for a customer.

the hotel is comfortable as previously commented upon the food was good the beer very poor and over priced some of the staff could do with a course in how to smile, in all the hotel is over price at £190 a night. would i return, i love the lake district but not this hotel

The Swan is great!

from Joysafina
I loved this hotel! It was in a lovely village - great location. The hotel had old English charm but the rooms were so modern in design and modern in facilities. It didn't have your typical 'flowery' B&B style about the rooms, but it was modern, elegant, and clean. The hotel restaurant was very good and the price of the hotel is very good value.
The hotel had a private garden (that was kind of a secret garden) that not many people knew about - but it was lovely! The bar was very nice too - great atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again - no question. The only thing I would suggest is to ask for a room away from the main road.

Comfortable Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is beside a main road which is very handy to take the bus which is right opposite the hotel. The room we had was very quiet. The atmosphere of the hotel is comfortable with big sofas and armchairs and feel very homy. Breakfast was excellent and the staff was quite friendly. Be careful if you are not taking a car because although the busses are frequent week days (roughly every 20 minutes), you can wait up to 2 hours in the week end, so read the bus timetable carefully.

Top Local Tips for Ambleside

Walk around the village First of all, leave the car at the hotel/accomodation and walk around the village to feel the atmosphere - plenty of footpaths as well as the village centre. Then a short drive out of the village will give you a wonderful view looking down over the lake. Wonderful place to visit at any time of the year!

Lakeland Llamas Go llama trekking. Unusual and very interesting!

The Jumble Room The best meal we have ever had- try the brown bread ice cream with pears- an unforgettable pudding!
