Sightseeing in Kapadokya (Cappadocia) Very cool rock formations, hand-carved caves. Some hotels are actually in the caves, beware some are rickety. There are lots of accomodations in Urgup and surrounding towns, do research before booking lest you get some hole even OBL wouldn't die in. That said, the Turkish people are the most hospitable. Everything is about the guest. There is an organized chaos, so just accept it, go with the flow and trust in your hosts that all will come together. Turkish food is great, that's why you won't find any other cuisine around, even fast food is rare. Lots of souvenir shops, as in all Turkish tourist areas, use the art of negotiation. Sightseeing in the Goreme area is required. If possible try to pick a tour with smaller buses, otherwise they waste a lot of time picking up and dropping off. You'll be amazed how the large buses negotiate the narrow steep winding streets. Inquire before booking what the tour is, be prepared for moderate hiking, blazing sun, bring water and sunscreen

local treats This region has a lot of local products that you will not find anywhere else -- a particular variety of dried figs that are especially flavorful and little dried grapes that our hotel used to season dolmas -- one or two in each dolma flavored the rice and enhanced the taste of the vegetable. We are in Istanbul now and I have not been able to find either of these products in the Spice Market. I also have not seen dried mulberries (red or white) which are very tasty. For a cook, getting the little grapes at one of the shops in town that specialize in fruits and nuts should be near the top of the list of things to bring back from Turkey.

shopping If you visit Urgup before than Istanbul, it is a good idea to shop there....it is more relaxing and the prices can be better than in Istanbul where you"ll feel agobiated with all the options and crowd.
