Top Local Tips for Konya

Superb city break for early spring Istanbul lived up to all my expectations and more. People are really friendly, helpful (and a smattering of turkish will get you a very long way!!!), the weather was pleasant and dry (14-18C), the historical sites are breathtaking and very easily reached, the public transport is superb (especially the new trams), and the food and drink (in both eurpoean and asian side) are very good value for money!

Wtch out for taxi metres Taxis in Istanbul are everywhere and most are honest but one can easily be ripped off. An important point to remember is that during the day (up to midnight) the taxi meter should display a '1' in the left hand corner. After midnight it should display a '2' in the corner. The '2' means that the price is increased but some of the taxis will display a '2' during the day - this means they are trying to rip you off! Another point to remember, especially at weekends outside tourist attractions, is to ask for a price to your hotel as they gang up and quote ridiculous prices (we were caught!) so the best thing to do is to walk down the road to another rank and get an alternative quote. Or take the taxi and when you get to your hotel say the concierge will pay. The concierge will know the true price and will pay and the amount will be added to your bill

Dont get ripped off by the taxi drivers Use the hotel provided taxis when leaving the hotel, they are affiliated with the Radisson and wont rip you off. When you catch a taxi on the street, dont just jump in. Tell the driver where you need to go (if your lucky he may speak a little english). Be sure they reset the taxi meter, they like to "forget" to do that. Make sure the taxi meter is set for daytime rate "gun diz" or something like that if you get one during daytime because the night time rate is much higher. Beware they will take you for a ride on the long route to add up the fare so know generally the direction you are going before you get it. Count your change!!! They will short change you whenever possible. If they do this, insist on the correct change, they have meters so use that to insure you dont get ripped off! Good luck
