Historical Sites Getting around by foot, Metro and taxi very easy and cheap. All sites close together. Many great sites to see going back to 50 AD.

Buy an Akbil! Buy an Akbil. This is an electronic tag that you can add money to (like an OYSTER card for London's tube) and use for local transportation on ferries, the metro, the Taksim Funicular and the Light Rail (metro Tram). You pay a deposit for a few lira and can top up your Akbil as necessary. It also reduces your fare to 1 Lira (I think) as opposed to the 1.3 Lira you would pay normally with cash. You also avoid the lineups at the Ticket Booths (Gise) for the metro, ferries and trams by going directly to the turnstile to the station platform.

Istanbul during Ramadan Do not be afraid to go to Istanbul during Ramadan. Being there at this time of the year was one of the most charming experience we ever had. When the sun goes down, it's a real party at the hyppodrome: families gather to share their supper, either at a restaurant or for a picnic, there is a lot of people, it is a moment of joy and pleasure for everybody.
