Top Local Tips for Istanbul

Beware of cheap restaurants and taxis. 1. Be extremely careful of ostensibly "cheap" roadside restaurants. The food is OK to good but they cheat like crazy on prices. They lure you in by advertising a certain amount for the food and when the bill comes you find out that each side costs the amount given. We were told 6 Lira for a plate and when the bill came it was 15 lira (6 for a little rice, 6 for a few beans and 3 for meat pie). Best to eat in restaurants with explicit price lists or if you eat in a road-side restaurant state clearly what you want and then make sure they tell you the exact price of what you plan to order. Do that before you sit down and you'll avoid nasty surprises. 2. Avoid taxis and enjoy buses and especially the tram. Cheap and very convenient. Public boats are also quite cheap so unless you really want to there is no need for special tour boats to haul you around.
