Top Local Tips for Istanbul

Watch your step! Istanbul is a VERY old city. The streets and sidewalks may have unexpected potholes. Uneven cobblestones are in many parts of the old city. An older lady on our trip fell twice. The second time was the last evening of her stay. She broke her wrist and had to spend the evening at the hospital. Tourists, no matter what their ages, need to pay attention when walking.

Turkey in Mid March the weather in Turkey was great, ranging from the upper 40's to mainly in the middle and upper 50's and 60's. Very little rain. I was so amazed at this country; it was more beautiful than I imagined and 99% of the people were friendly and helpful. This is the "off" season, so bargaining during this period is especially good. We took the tram to most of the attractions in istanbul and it was easy to find your way; tourist 'police" are most everywhere and there was not problem with communication. Tell your friends to go to Turkey, it's fabulous!

Grand bazaar The thought of it (over 4,000 shops) was great, but the hassle factor was incredible. If you stop to look at anything, you are jumped upon immediately. Even if you don't stop, you're hassled. Although I was expecting the shopping experience (e.g. haggling, more forthright sales techniques) to be different from the UK, most of our tour party visited once, and then point-blank refused to go back in. There are plenty of great shops in and around central Istanbul - so if you don't like direct selling at it's worst, stay away! You can find all the gifts you could dream of else were, and not feel like you were swimming through shark-infested waters whilst shopping
