Top Local Tips for Istanbul
Istanbul on your own You can definitely do Istanbul on your own. I was on a cruise that stopped by Istanbul for 2 days with my family and we figured out how to take their public tram/train around. Very convenient and cheap. Don't bother booking tours or excursions, do it on your own for sure! All the top touristy spots are a must see. Especially the Blue Mosque. The carpet dealers I would say you can skip. It is an experience but you wouldn't be missing out if you skipped it. Unless you plan to go there just to buy a pricey good carpet. A guy spoke to us on the streets and volunteered to walk us around and tell us little things in exchange we stop by his carpet store to see what he has to show. We went, they were very hospitable, gave us apple tea and did a "carpet demonstration" showing us the most beautiful carpets in all sizes. In the end it was just too pricey for us up to $5000US, only cause I'm not a huge carpet fan but if you are then surely go! They are really good quality carpets.
Istanbul by Night with Turkish Dinner The driver didn't speak English at all. There was no evening tour. The restaurant was only a few minutes drive. The driver didn't know where to take us, so he had to make a phone call and talk with someone else. http://www.allistanbultours.com
