Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Sumengen Sultanahmet
Turkey, Otel Sumengen.
from DizzidaleD. Jackson (United Kingdom)
Great location/ good accomodations
from Hockley1614Loved Sumengen Hotel
from fumias my second time.
The comfortable experience I had there last time
made me choose them again and
they’ll still be the place for me
if I luckily have a chance to go back to Istanbul again!
They’re in great location with main tourist spots and
nice restaurants and shops nearby, but also
calm and peaceful atmosphere is around the hotel.
Staff are helpful and kindly gave me some information
about transport and a recommendable restaurant,
where I had lovely sea food.
I have to say that the promotional room underground I stayed
was rather dark, so if you’re on honeymoon or something and
prefer great view another room must be safer to choose, but
I myself didn’t find any problem for the price and
you can still have amazing sea view from the terrace
when you have breakfast!
And another pleasant moment for me was after the breakfast.
I quite liked to relax for a short time on the ottoman style sofa
in the lobby upstairs, looking out of the window and
viewing streets and people coming and going down there -
very peaceful and comfortable.
The price was of course much higher than last time
I stayed in winter but still reasonable for the quality
compared to other hotels like one with unappetizing breakfast
I stayed first time I visited Istanbul.
Sumengen could be the answer for everyone!
My favorite
from CatharinaMy experience with the staff was nothing but positive. The guys from the desk were very friendly and helpful. I had to work in Istanbul and whenever I had problems with the language they offered me help in making phone calls and writing letters. And I can not even count the cups of coffees that they offered me!
I will definitely go back to Sumengen next time when I am in Istanbul.
nothing to complain about...
from 2569okay, some of the rooms are below the floor you enter, but the hotel is built on a slope - so you still got windows down there :-) and there's so much to see in istanbul you surely won't be sitting in your room and look out of the window!
every day they cleaned the room, changed the towels and refilled the minibar. another plus is for the silent nights - no sounds of the street or anything like that.
the staff was very helpful; they gave us (after an offered welcome-drink ;-)) a citymap and lots of useful tips where to go and how. they really seemed to care that we're content with everything!
to make a (not so) long story short: i can only recommend this hotel to everybody!
Fled After One Night
from Not_DisclosedFirst, there was a toilet leak issue in my bathroom that was caused by a misalignment of a metal tube that puts water in the bowel with each flush. When I alerted the staff, one of the guys wiped up the water and said it was okay. I replied that it was not okay, because more flushes would deposit more water. Only then did they find a maintenance guy to check it out--and he was very brusque. Also, the room wasn't that clean, and I found a couple of baby flies milling about in it.
Second, my room was right next to the elevator, which I could hear going up and down well into the evening and then in the morning.
Third, in the morning when I tried to use the shower (a shallow rectangular receptacle holding a drain), I realized the drain was clogged with hair and shower head was faulty and was spraying water out the sides as well as through the holes that water are meant to flow through.
And last, when I went to have breakfast--sure there's a decent view (but almost all of the hotels in the area have roof-top patios), other guests let their kids go around yelling and running up and down the patio--and the staff did nothing about it. The food also was not that good. It seemed to me that some of the pastries had been cooked using lamb lard...which was revolting.
Alas, I realized that complaining was no use and informed the desk I was checking out that morning, despite my reservations. They didn't like it...but oh well. While having breakfast, I actually used the cell phone on the patio to find another hotel, Hotel Arcadia, which gave me a room for 80 Euros (way under their advertised price)...and was MUCH nicer.
This hotel needs to remodel and get its act together to deserve your Euros, Dollars, YTL, etc. Istanbul is amazing and having a pleasant base from which to explore it is a must.
Great location, helpful staff
from EyalaStaff was very hepful. Rooms are clean but quite old, yet a very good value for the money.

Top Local Tips for Istanbul
Transfers from Attaturk Airport to accommodation Turkey is full of rorts and rip-offs. We discovered one of many with hotels booking transfers to/from your hotel. Try to get accommodation which provides transfers as part of the tariff otherwise you're inevitably going to get ripped off. Once you get into Istanbul, you can see what you should have paid - but it's often too late then. Check around on the internet for prices - many travel agencies will organise transfers for you.
a very charming restaurant You shouldn't miss a dinner on the terrace of Hamdi restaurant! It's fantastic, the food is superb and the price is really ok. Just remember to book in advance and be sure they take note you want to have dinner outside!!! If the restaurant is full they probably will try to sit you indoor!
Travel to Taksim It is worth a trip to Taksim in the evening. You can get there by taking the tram to kabatas and then fenichular railway to taksim square. will take about 20 mins from Sultanhamet and cost about 2.8 YTL. (cheaper & quicker than a taxi) When there look for the area off the main street which has excellent fiish restaurants and bars. There are numerous places packed into the cobblestone streets with excellent service and prices. Well worth a vist.
