To tell the truth the location excellent, service excellent price good and only the food need some improvement. Overall the rating is excellent. Wonderful Location at the Spectra
from JessicaSanAntonio_TXThe rooms are comfortable, with brand new beds; the decor is Ottoman with the drapes and undercurtains leading the traveler to imagine being here in the 19th century. The bathrooms are small, but very new and work extremely well, having an abundance of hot water, towels, and guest soaps. The cleaning and breakfast service on the terrace are done by 2 women with an eye toward customer comfort and courtesy.
It is, however, the location that brings this hotel to the forefront of the list of small possible hotels in Istanbul: it is directly across the street from the famous Blue Mosque, only about 2 blocks from the tram line, and close nough to the Bosporus that we can see the ships come through the straights from the 4th floor Terrace at breakfast. In addition, it is located on a quiet street, across from a huge park where people sit and children play in the cool of the evening, and there is NO traffic noise. Many other places are located on the noisy bus and train lines, but the Hotel Spectra is centrally located without the commotion of the city.
Taxi drivers have no trouble finding the Spectra, and walking to the Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, the Cistern, and the Ferry Lines is an easy way to sightsee.
To top all of this off, the owner, Dr. Ziya Sumengen, a retired profssor, has lived here since 1980 and knows the cfity, its sights, its wonders, and its twists and turns. He is a charming host and very interested in helping his guests see the best of Istanbul. We were two women traveling and found the security and safety of the area and the hotel to be quite good. I highly recommend the Hotel Spectra to travelers who want to see the best of Istanbul.
Great Location --Friendly Staff

from BishkekNomadThe Spectra is so nice I've stayed there 4 times in the past year. It's beginning to feel like home. It's a quick 20 minute ride to the airport and the hotel arranges for free individual tranfer from the airport and will arrange your transport back at a reasonable cost. This really beats trying to figure out the taxi system or sharing a van with other customers from different hotels! I've stayed for quick overnight stays and for a longer vacation - both kinds of stays have been great, with the staff accomodating all our needs.
The Spectra is in an old Ottoman mansion - very charming, with modern conveniences. The rooms are small, but comfortable, with nice beds, tv, phone, fridge and clean bathrooms. Breakfast is delicious - traditionally Turkish with olives, fruit, bread and cheese, as well as more continental favorites, including eggs, cereal and yoghurt. Best of all, it is served in a roof-top restaurant with spectacular views of the Marmara Sea, the Blue Mosque, the Haghia Sofia and the Hippodrome. A ten minute walk takes you to these and other monuments. All the rooms we have stayed in have had great (almost magical) views. There is nothing quite like falling asleep to a view of the Blue Mosque lit up at night!
I always make my reservations via email and receive a response confirming everything within 24 hours. Our rooms have always been ready for us and we've been able to stay in them regardless of our check-in and check-out time. We have stayed there with two small children who are always welcomed fondly, which we really appreciate. But I would also recommend the Spectra for travellers without kids. You couldn't find a better location, a more romantic spot, or a more helpful staff if you tried.
Loved the location and the hospitality
from MetalgeniusBut that was not why we write this review of Hotel Spectra... The cozy hotel is located right in the lap of history. From our bed room ( specially provided to us as we were a couple) window we could see the Blue Mosque in its magnificent wonder. At night, when the same was lit up, it was as if we were in wonderland.
The location was of course within walking distance to the Grand Bazaar, the Sultan Ahmet square, the "kofte" places, the tram station and of course the Mosque/Church of St. Sofia.
With just a simple e-mail request we were provided with an electric kettle and I could wake my wife up ( as I do every day) with a cup of tea!!
The dining room , or should I say ,the roof restaurant, had the Blue Mosque in the view plus the breath taking back ground of the Sea of Marmara.
Our short 4 day visit was complete with excellent hospitality and what is even more noteworthy..we have Dr Sumengen and his charming wife, as friends now!!
We shall recommend the hotel to all our friends in India and abroad.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN ISTANBUL!
from SandyBeanIf you want warmth and hospitality in a 'home away from home' hotel, steps from where you want to be, there is nowhere else to go, but to the Spectra or Ava hotels. See the pictures I put up, and Contact Dr. and Mrs. Sumengen today. You'll be glad you did! HIGHLY recommended. Enjoy your trip!

Well located
from IterThe hotel decor is past its prime but all the staff were friendly and the room was well heated.
Plus points were: the hotel arranged a free pick up by car from the airport on arrival; free internet access in the lobby; and there was 10% discount on hotel bill for paying cash in £ sterling.
Top Local Tips for Istanbul
bakery There is a great little bakery just up the street from Hotel Spectra. Very good prices. Great cookies! The owner is honest and will not rip you off. Another tip to keep in mind. Learn a little of the language. The locals really appreciate it and it will make your trip more special.
Istanbul : get to know it on foot, and also ride the ferries. The best way to get to know Istanbul is by foot. Walk from Eminonu where the ferries are to Eyyub. It is a long walk. Or walk as far as Unkapani. Go through the Spice Bazaar,(also called Misir Carsisi, or Egyptian Bazaar). There are so many things to see and do and places to stop and shop and eat and drink tea and smoke water pipes along that way. Or. walk along the Bosphorus, in the other direction. And take a ferry to Uskudar and also take the ferry to the Islands (Adalar). There is an excursion all~day ferry from Eminonu to the end of the Bosphorus, and you can get off and get back on anywhere along the way. Wander around Uskudar and any of the villages along the Bosphorus. Getting to know Istanbul by foot and ferry will show you Istanbul the way it has always been since Constantine made it capital of the known world.
airport shuttle buses Yellow official taxis are available, but if you can't agree a fare for the job it could prove expensive on a meter, as there is a few traffic queues as you get near the city/and coming out of it. Shuttle buses (mini buses) are fairly cheap and accommodate about 12 people (for 45-50km from Sabiha Gokcen ours was 20YTL per person), but be prepared for all the suitcases to be piled into the interior of the bus, as there didn't seem to be any boot/side hold to store them in. The cases were piled on the 2 front seats up to the ceiling, with a couple on the floor near the door exit.
