Top Local Tips for Istanbul

public transport from Ataturk Airport-Sultanahmet contrary to what most guidebooks advise take the Metro from the Airport to Zetinburnu and change to the tram, direction Eminöu, there (NOT Aksaray) it´s a much simpler transfer with luggage ( the other involves a short hike). You will need 2 tokens per person-cost 2.60 TL, available at Airport Metro station.

get the price first- preferably in writing! on our trip by ferry up the Bosphorus we stopped at Anadolu Kavagi for lunch. We ate at one of the many fish restaurnts and despite choosing a fish that was written down as a portion price on the menu we were charged a super inflated kilo price (60TL for fish that was selling on the markets at 13TL!), we declined to pay so much and had a bit of a stand off. We put 2/3 rds of the money on the table and left because the ferry was due to depart . We´re not usually so bold and take a small amount of tourist overcharging as the norm but this was extreme. We were forwarned as I´d seen two other sets of customers being similarly suprised on the receipt of their bills and who had simply paid up. The next day almost the same thing occured in an eaterie (Subasi) next to the Grand Bazaar ...they must have seen us coming! This time we paid up but didn´t go back although the food was good.
