Top Local Tips for Istanbul

Balikci Sabahattin (Sabahattin the Fisherman) Fantastic, fresh fish at this gem of a restaurant in Sultanahmet. Delicious starters are brought to your table on a large tray, and you simply pick the ones you like the look of best (each portion around 7 euro). Main courses cost around 30 euro - do ask the waiter for recommendations as dishes are seasonal. Make sure you save some room for the lovely semolina dessert topped with home-made ice cream. The restaurant is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike, so book ahead and if you cannot secure a reservation, do consider going for lunch - the restaurant is usually empty in the day, even at weekends. Sabiha Gocken airport and VIsas be aware that if you use Easy Jet to fly from London you will land the at airport in Asia which is a considerable distance from the city and involves a taxi fare probably higher than your plane fare! If you are young or intrepid you can use a bus . Also be aware ( which I was not) that most people need a visa to enter Turkey . This involves a LENGTHY queing process at the airport and requires that you pay for the visa IN YOUR OWN currency. So make sure that you have enough. From the UK costs £10 but a lot of countries for reasons which are not clear are more expensive. Why the citizens of New Zealand are exempt remains a mystery to me.

Tram Tram is easy and fun to mingle with local people. Buy tokens (2 each for round trip) and go on your way.
