Top Local Tips for Istanbul
Ask the staff at your hotel to arrange taxis. A good suggestion would be to ask your reception at the hotel to arrange taxis for you or ask them how much a taxi ride should be from where you are to your destination. Our hotel staff at Alp Guesthouse had given us estimated taxi fares to various destinations and many times we have found taxi drivers charging us double the amount. So, unless you have an idea how much the ride should be, you will basically get ripped-off. And, many times the taxi driver will get lost and not even get you to your destination, but yet you still have to pay. So, establishing a taxi rate or making sure that the driver is charging with the meter, you should be okay. But, be prepared to not get to you destination with one taxi! It happened to us quite a few times where we had to get 2 or 3 taxis to get to our destination. And, sometimes we just gave up and just figured our way and walked to the destinationor if the driver says they're charging by meter you be so that you have a figure in your head. This w
Get a personal guide for a day - I recommend Mehmet Following the advice on "www.TurkeyTravelPlanner.com" we hired a private tour guide for 1 of our 5 days in Istanbul. Our guide, Mehmet Tetik (http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/guides/tetik_m.html) was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Istanbul's history and provided great insight into Modern Turkish politics and culture. Since we had already hit the main sites in Sultanahmet on our own already, we had Mehmet drive us to parts of the city would probably not have seen otherwise. During our day we visited Chora church (Kariye Museum), Eyup, Fener & Balat, Galata, Orakoy and the Byzantine walls. In addition the lunch he took us to was one of the most amazing meals we had during our entire trip (and local -not tourist- prices to boot!).
don't do a tour Most of the sites in Istanbul are in walking distance. It is 10 ytl to almost everything. Blue Mosque is free. The Bosphorus cruise can be done on public boats for very little money.
