Small Budget Hotel
from fish_bLocation: Ebussuud Cad.Safettinpasa Sok.No:6 Sirkeci, Istanbul. Located in a quiet alleyway about 50 meters up off the main tramvay tracks, means you can barely hear the sound of the tram. 2 blocks away from both Sirkeci and Gulhane tram station - you can take either of the stations for the very convenient tramvay (Zeytinburnu-Kabatas line, which I would bet you would use if you're not into expensive taxis). Restaurants are aplenty in this area as well as convenient stores and barbershop. Near Eminonu ferry docks and away from the touts of Sultanahmet,.
Room: Surprisingly, the photos online did not match my expectations - a little better. Small but neat and functional, though the distance between one side of the bed and the wall is only about 1 and a hal feet (see photos), with a walkway carpet on a wooden-designed-design linoleum. The hardly-english-speaking-yet-helpful reception in the morning I arrived is giving me a twin bed room, nice but smaller beds for a single occupant, so I requested for a double which was on the first floor facing the street fronting a small otopark and a restaurant, just beside the staircase leading down to the reception (room 101). Bed was big and comfortably sturdy and pillows were not years old. Cabinet, desk and a TV, also a Disposable room slippers.
Bathroom was small, about 1M X 2M, with equally small sink, shower and toilet in one. Toilettries - soaps and shampoos, clean towels, and a hair dryer.
Breakfast: At the basement - the usual tamatoes, cucumbers, olives, cheeses, bread and spreads, coffee and tea, nothing really special, juz the ordinary fare, yet enough.
Of course I could hear the “adhan” (call for prayer) but this is Istanbul, you can hear it anywhere, it’s a part of the city sound.
Plus: Free WIFI internet connection inside the room – very convenient. The english-speaking reception guy in the evening helped me with the set-up. They’re helpful, you juz have to ask. PCs are available at the lobby lounge.
To call an outside line though, you have to buy a phone card to use the phone booth available juz beside the reception.
Fault? Not much…except for some pesky mozkies bites at night. and the smallish size of the room yet you get what you paid for (at euro19 with cold breakfast). Not advisable though for claustrophobics.
Recommended, if you are not fussy and bothered by smallish room, and you're on a budget - Agan Hotel is a good choice in the Sirkeci area.
Value for money, especially if you have your laptop with you. Ratestogo or Hotelclub, where I booked this hotel, has a good rate.
Great Location and Very Good Value
from martinapusulyaValue for Money-Great location
from FificatDordogneWell located but could do with some TLC
from FriedelandAndrewFantastic location, Great for those travelling on a budget!
from U_kMr_Fstreet within walking distance of Sirkeci train-station making travel
around Istanbul and Turkey fantastically accessible.
The hotel was just 5 minutes away from some beautiful gardens of which i have forgotten the name. Another 5 minutes of walking takes you to the old quarter of Istanbul where one can take in the Cami yeri (Blue mosque) aswell as the Aghia Sophia and Topkapi palace. The underground catacombs and the Egyptian Bazaar. Take another walk and you will come to the Grand Bazaar which was the highlight of my stay-the bartering was such good fun. If you don't feel like walking,
why not take advantage of the highly efficient, environmentally friendly tram system which takes you from right outside the hotel Agan to sultanahmet and then all the way up to the Bazaar, I prefer to walk as one gets a real insight into the city, plus the museum of Islamic and Turkish art is along the way which at just £2 (5 ytl) is definitely worth a quick visit.
As you can tell the hotel is in a prime location for those visiting Istanbul for it's historical attributes and people planning to travel
arounf turkey as Eminonu is a Transport hub offering Ferries across to the Asian shore and beyond! For those travelling to Istanbul for the famed nightlife of Taksim square and to get an insight into the modern Istanbul, you will find yourself taking the tram/furnicular to get across. Taxi's are widely available and good value to move around this city of 12 million.
To sum up, if you're travelling to Istanbul to do some sight-seeing and travel around, If you're flying into Istanbul as a gateway to the land beyond then the Hotel Agan is a good choice.
The location is fantastic and the room has everything you need. The price obviously reflects the fact that this hotel isn't the Ritz however rooms are clean and serviced regularly and the price includes
a sufficent breakfast of turkish breads, pasteries and vegetables.
Good value hotel
from yahtzeenaziMy only complaint was that on our last night in the city, my sister and I wanted to go out and see bellydancing, and Mehmet recommended that we go to a restaurant (Sultana's) that the hotel has a promotion deal with; we paid a fixed price ($45 US) for dinner, drinks, and to get picked up at and brought back to the hotel by shuttle. Unfortunately, the food at Sultana's was terrible (it actually made my sister sick the next day), it's a pretty seedy tourist-trap type place, and half the dancers looked bored out of their minds. I would stay at the hotel again, but avoid Sultana's! Hopefully they'll do business with a better restaurant or club in the future.
Great Location
from Terraprilovely!
from dotty13Really helpful and friendly staff, despite the language barrier. We found the hotel to be well placed for sightseeing in the city, everything within easy walking distance. The breakfast was good and our room was cool and comfortable.
During our stay my daughter needed medical advice, the hotel staff could not have been more helpful to us and ensured that we
were able to access necessary advice and medication. We were very satisfied.
great location, great breakfast, nice room
from JensineBeside that we had a great stay. The hotel is in a very quiet street, the breakfast was great, free internet in the lobby, the room was bright. The bathroom was a bit small but functional. The location was how we like it - a 5 minut walk away from all the noise and the backpackers :-)
We will highly recommand this place as "good value for money" - the price is only 29 Euro for a double.
Terrible surprise
from LucyCarvalhoTop Local Tips for Istanbul
Watch out for tourist menus Some restaurants have 2 menus which are the same but differ in price. The more expensive menu for tourists. We went to a restaurant with our friend who is a local and she caught the waiters out immediately on the more expensive menu.
Grand Bazaar was the best
Don't stop to talk to anyone The Turkish people are very friendly. However, if they have a stall, shop, tour, carpets they want to sell they will become very pushy and are very difficult to shrug off. As you walk along and they greet you, just give a friendly smile, say hello back and keep going. Once you stop, you will be there for the next 40 minutes! I asked one guy for directions to the Grand Bazaar and he offered to walk me there which I thought was very kind of him. It was only afterwards that I had realised he had taken me the long way around and funnily enough we had to walk past his carpet shop! It took me forever to lose him!
