Have stayed at this hotel several times. Two years ago it underwent a major remodeling and renovation. Always it is very clean, with a friendly, helpful staff. The location is perfect for the traveler - any number of attractions and restaurants are within a 5 minute walk. Forget the more upscale places, settle in here, and enjoy the city.

Top Local Tips for Istanbul

Crossing the Bosphorus When travelling from Europe to Asia or vice-versa, don't take a taxi. The highway is clogged, the journey is long and you'll pay an exorbitant rate. Just get to the banks of the Bosphorus, pay around 1 US Dollar, and enjoy the pleasant 15 minute ferry ride across.

Istanbul Taxis Use taxis when you can. Make sure that you have a map with the location of your accommodation marked on it, as most drivers do not speak very good English. Taxis are cheap and save you having to lug all your purchases back with you.

Taxis Drivers and Carpet Dealers Make sure taxi drivers use their meters. We hailed a taxi near the Galata Tower to take us up the hill, a steep but relatively short distance. He insisted on charging 15 YTL ($12US) and refused to turn on his meter...despite mutiple requests. Before he had driven a block we told him to stop ("dur") and got out of the taxi. Another thing to be prepared for is the onslaught of carpet dealers near the major attractions. Some are very blatant and obvious while others are much more subtle. Be aware if someone approaches you, especially if they appear overly friendly, eventually they will probably try to coax you into a nearby shop. Typically, carpet dealers pay these individuals a commission for bring customers in. Unfortunately, they can be quite persistent.
