Avoid getting ripped off by Istanbul cab drivers Check the meter when you get into the cab - the meter should start at 1.73 between 6am-midnight, and then after midnight the meter should start at 2.73 (the total fare is increased by 50% after midnight). We were swindled by a cab driver who charged us the night rate on a trip at 9pm - lesson learned - check the meter before setting off!

Places to see Depending on the length of your stay, make sure you save one day for Blue Mosque, Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia), and Topkapi Palace. Fantastic classic Turkish food at Konyali Restaurant in Topkapi Palace with magnificent views of Bosphorus. One day in Kapali Carsi (grand bazaar), where bargaining/negotiaition is necessary and expected. Take a break in Havuzlu Restaurant for a delicious and inexpensive Turkish lunch. My favorite passtime is to take a slow ferry on a clear day for a half day excursion from Eminonu to Anadolu Hisari and back to enjoy the beauty of Bosphorus. Make sure you find and outside seat, and taste fresh simit and hot tea.

bus and texi the bus is cheap and working almost all the time.there are also service taxies, which cost the same and take less time, but only to few directions.
