t hesitate to book there

from AnnaL
We were happily surprised by this hotel. The location is really easy for reaching what you will have to visit. We were two women and not afraid to walk at night in the neighbourhood. The room was clean and big. We were in the new part of the hotel, we had friends in the old one, and their room was smaller. We had breakfast there and it was OK. The staff is very very kind, (and so are the people in istanbul, don' t be afraid if you are lost or have any kind of question, they are always ready to help you). We really had a great time there and will recommend it to everyone going to Istanbul

A terrific experience

from Flapsdown
6 of us stayed there in October for 4 nights. Rooms were fine - especially room 401 and the ones in the renovated section of the hotel. Others are a bit small and not renovated. Breakfast was good, service excellent and the location was walking distance to all the major sights. Loved that they have internet available to guests at no charge!

Perfect location and a cosy atmosphere

from schnecke
We stayed in the Celal Sultan hotel for 4 nights and liked it very much. The location is just perfect and all sights in the old town (Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazar etc.) are in walking distance. The tram station to go to the other part of the city is also only 5 minutes away. The hotel is very cosy and nicely furnished and you feel kind of home when entering the lobby. We booked a standard room which was very small but cosy and with fresh flowers in the room. The room was very clean and they changed linens each day. The bathroom was very very small and very old (but clean) and there was no heater so it was very cold. But for the price the room was really ok and we slept there only anyway. If you want to spent more money the superior rooms are bigger and bathrooms are renovated. The hotel also has a roof terrace with a perfect view at Hagia Sophia - just nice to sit there and enjoy the view. The hotel staff is extremly friendly and the breakfast was also very good. The served also turkish breakfast (cheese, olives, yoghurt, honey...) and also regular thinks, very good choice and yummieh :-) Th room rate also includes one transport to or from teh airport, which was very convenient for us when they piked us up. On our way back we took a taxi which was 25 turkish lira. I really would recommend the hotel and the location can not be better. The only really negative point was that you can hear all noises in your room when people are on the floor etc. But we were lucky and the hotel was not fully booked but I guess when the hotel is fully booked it can be very noisy from other rooms and people.

Although I was looking for something more "traditional" considering the hotel is located in the Old Quarter I loved it.
We were a party of 7 including a 7 month old baby and we couldn't have been more welcomed.
The rooms are modern and very clean. It's not the Four Seasons but the location more than made up for it. Only a 2 minute walk to the Blue Mosque and other major attractions. The area was great for taking long strolls at night.
The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. When returning from an outing they were right there to assist with the baby stroller and had our keys waiting.
If you're wanting a cocktail, go elsewhere. The prices were higher than you would pay in L.A. or New York.
Otherwise, I'd recommend the hotel to anyone (other than the snooty Waldorf or Four Seasons crowd which I've stayed at numerous times). Don't expect your bed turned down at night with a mint on the pillow.

t book a triple room

from KateinCastle
The hotel lobby is attractive, it is in a great location, the view from the terrace is fantastic, and the breakfast is fine. Unfortunately we booked a triple room for 3 adults, and the hotel had great difficulty providing this. First of all we had an extremely cramped room with 2 twin beds and a camp bed. We were promised to move (daily) but this didn't happen until half way through our stay. We were offered another inadequate cramped room, and finally were moved to two adjoining rooms. This was ok, but not ideal, until the aircon started dripping. They did fix this, but ultimately the mess about the rooms put a dampner on our holiday. Some of the staff were very pleasant and helpful, but others were rude or incompetent - one barman served rose wine when asked for red and didn't know the difference! I'm not sure whether I'd go back again, but I'd certainly never book a triple room there!

3rd visit in a row

from Onthego76
I have stayed at the Celal Sultan with friends 2 times and am returning for the 3rd time this summer. If you are looking for an uncomplicated, clean and comfortable hotel from which you can easily do all the important sightseeing, then this is a great choice. The location is fantastic- just a few steps from the Cisterns, the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Old Bazaar. The rooms are clean and the staff have always been extremely friendly. Because the hotel is situated in a side street, it doesn't get noisy at night, which is a huge plus. One side of the hotel has been newly renovated - make sure to ask for these rooms as they are far better than the rooms in the older wing and definitely worth the higher price. As the Celal Sultan is not as well known as other hotels like the Empress Zoe, it isn't such a tourist magnet. I can surely recommend it.

What A Romantic View!

from lovechicago53
We stayed at the Celal Sultan Hotel over the Christmas Holiday. We loved our room which had a magnificent view of the beautiful Hagia Sophia, it was lit up at night so the view looked just like a post card! (make sure you ask for this view in advance). Very reasonable prices, and the breakfast was great! This hotel is very romantic, we didn't want to stay in a large crowded hotel but we still wanted great service with class, and that's what we got! The location was awesome because just a block down the street was the modern air conditioned train you can take to go shoppping and site-seeing, it was nearly about a dollar! The staff at the hotel were very kind and helpful and the rooms were kept very clean! We would definitely stay there again! We would love to go in the summer next time because there is a roof top terrace/restaurant with fantastic views of Istanbul, it's open in the warmer seasons. We have stayed all over the world but we definitely love Istanbul the most, the culture, the scrumptious food, and ladies, Istanbul is a shoppers paradise!!! The fashion there is incredible and very trendy, better than anywhere I have ever shopped before, wow what a great metropolitan city!!!

Location, location, location.

from rockinrose
A perfect location, within walking distance of all the major sights. Blue Mosque, Aghia Sofia and the Cistern- 5 mins. Grand Bazaar -10 mins. Spice Bazaar and Bosphorus- 15 mins. Many restaurants in the immediate area but all with very similar menus. The hotel had a restaurant open until 11pm and 24 hour room service. We ate lunch and dinner at the hotel one day and the food was good, nothing gastronomic, but adequate.

Arriving very late, after a delayed flight, we were shown to our room, a double instead of the twin we had booked. This was very small, a standard 4' 6'' bed with access only on one side. It should realy have been a single room. This might have been alright for a one night stay but not for five nights. They did move us to a twin the next day but this meant no unpacking until this was sorted.

Rooms did not have any type of chairs but there was a nice lounge area beyond reception which was almost always quiet and empty of people.
The rooms and bathrooms were clean, nicely decorated and had air conditioning.

The staff were mostly very helful regarding directions but one person in particular was more than annoying in trying to get us to book a 'Turkish Evening' excursion. He started on arrival and asked if we had made a decison at every opportunity, finally giving up when he knew we were leaving. Helpful is one thing, pushiness is another as there was plenty of that outside the hotel.

The most disappointing aspect was breakfast, no fresh orange juice in a city with fresh juice bars at every corner! Only one morning out of five was there fresh grapefruit available and a very limited variety of bread.

This hotel was ideal for a city break and I would recommend it for its fantastic location. You can easily travel to the newer part of the city by taxi or the tram which stops less than 5 mins. from the hotel and is less than 50p a trip.

The best hotel i stayed in since years , in Turkey.

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have travelled all over the world, slept in so many hotels, good ones but also a lot of mediocre ones and some bad. But this hotel being a recommendation from a good friend of mine could be well worth the try. (after first checking the website and some of the reviews on this site) I must say i do not feel bad with my choice at all. I stayed in the hotel during the newyear period. I experienced the most fun newyear with friends and family in the celal sultan since years. Also the singers they invited in the hotel and the rooftop fireworks together with all hotel guests was joyfull. We had a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant which u had too reserve in front. The atmosphere was super and after a few drinks everybody started dancing. the manager and staff of the hotel where so friendly they made our stay perfect.
It seemed that the hotel just had a new building taken in service. We all stayed in wonderfull bright and clean rooms. The rooms are so tastefully decorated and breath an make u feel in an oasis of tranquility. Such a cosy place that we sometimes did not want too get up in the morning. I must say the best thing in the rooms is the bed, i even asked the manager where he had bought this ow so comfortable bed, which is so nice after a hard day of walking around. The bathrooms al have a bathtub and enough space too go around. I will certainly stay in this hotel again and will reccomend this hotel too everybody. Thank U for your hospitality, thank U.

Top Local Tips for Istanbul

public transport Get a hotel transfer from the airport to where you are staying. After you have been there a while you will learn the public transport system and then use it to go everywhere. However when you arrive through Attaturk airport the public transport runs through a seriously dodgy and lonely route. It is fine once you know where you are going though...and the public transport network is topnotch, London could look and learn from the level of quality.

Buying carpets Don't go to a carpet shop unless you want to buy one. Do bargain. Don't buy unless you want to. Leave after having had a presentation of the carpets and consider whether you want to buy it. It's all pressure selling; never believe otherwise.

dress for the culture Take a head scarf- women and respect theculture of knees and shoulders covered. Did see westerners dressed scantily but just didnt feel right to do likewise in Istanbul
