Top Local Tips for Istanbul

Don't be put off (or taken in) by the carpet dealers on the street Istanbul is full of carpet dealers, and half of them seeto stand around near major tourist attractions lookking for customers. "Excuse me," they say, "Where are you from?" One they start a conversation, they invite for a cup of tea in the store, which always "very close." I have a moustache, and a couple of them started the pitch with, "You have a Turkish moustache! But are you Turkish?" It's potentially annoying, but if you say "No thanks" firmly a couple of times and avoid engaging in conversation, they go away. Out of maybe 15 times that I was approached in 3 days, only one guy was so persistent that I had to raise my voice and sound annoyed. It's part of the scene, so don't be put off.. and don't be taken in. f these guys have to spend all day standing around hunting for customers, thnk of the markup they must have to charge.

Car travel a one way car/taxi travel costs about 35 new Turkish Lira. You need to pre-negotiate this price with the taxi at the airport. Even better, you can ask your hotel to pick you up for 20 Euros (about 35-38 Lira), like we did. The Nena Hotel gave us a free pickup, and the drop back to the airport cost 20 Euros.
