We were on our last holiday as a couple before we have our first child along with the celebration of our 2nd anniversay and my wife's birthday for 2 weeks in September. The hotel has issues with over booking and sub standard accomodation, people were getting put into an annex to the main hotel, which use to be for the hotel staff. There were holes in the walls, unclean rooms and leaking air conditioning to name a couple of there peoples complaints. We were LUCKY! Enough to be put into the main hotel accomodiotn which had delightful views of the back of someone elses apartment (be aware of the small print on land views being described).
The food was Ok but became repetative, waiters and bar staff were very friendly and helpful. This does not really transfer across to the reception staff which appear to not care as much as they should (not very helpful nor understanding) The hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as there are no lifts and there are steps with no handrails all over the place. I know this is a different country but health and saftey would have a field day.
The surrounding grounds around the hotel were very attactive with pretty seating areas dotted around. The Sea was crystal clear in the morning which became choppy in the afternoon. There were plenty of sunbeds around the pool and on the beach and even on the jetty there were foam beds. We named it Pretentious Island due to the amount of thongs and G strings kicking about.
The 'animation'(entertainment team) team were not interested in everyone's needs. They just seemed interested in what they wanted and chatting up the dolly birds (although I am speaking about the majority of them and not an individual which did go out of his way)
In its day, I would say that the hotel was a 5 star, but what would appear to be a lack of up keep and not feeding the money back in has let the place become very very tired. The photos which have been put into the web pages are vert misleading, must have been taken when it first opened (firstly the jetty is a lot smaller)but then again why would they want to show the hotel being run down.

We arrived in the early hours of the morning and taken into the hotel by a side door which was propped open by a rock and flooded with water. On entering, we noticed two ladies sleeping on the couches in reception. It turned out that they had refused to stay in their allocated room. This was no suprise when we were taken to ours, the room was extremely basic, dirty, cracks in the wall were filled in with faded newspaper, wall fittings were hanging off the wall, etc. etc
We had left our dogs in kennels that were more inviting than this room. The view was that of a very large tin shack spewing out smoke and what looked like a rubbish tip but was probably a building supplies store and working area. Obviously we refused our room. We were offered 2 alternatives which were little better and we refused these. We did not sample any food at this hotel. Eventually, after we hadn't slept for 30 hours we were offered a transfer to another hotel belonging to the same hotel chain (Royal Marin Resort Hotel in Gumbat). The room offered here was a little better than at the first hotel and we were so tired we had little choice but to accept. This hotel was at the top of a hill and there was a nice beach front down the hill (courtesy bus), no complaints. However the food, unless you are vegetarian, was awful; and even though the veg looked ok it was tastless. The beer was so weak you could probably drown in it before feeling the effect of drinking it.
The nearest we got to meat was boiled chicken thighs or turkey leg meat. We got so fed up that we hired a car and went touring and staying at hotels on spec. From then on we had good accomodation and good food, the premium we paid for all inclusive was a waste of money.
I notice that there are some good reviews for the Etap and can only conclude that there are some good rooms (or those people are used to living in a shed). I cannot comment about the facilities for children but I can say that, if only adults in your party, then go to Turkey on flight only and hire a car. Stay where you want (no problems even in Aug) and eat where you want. You are likely to save money over the all inclusive price charged by Altinel. Do not be enticed by the 5 star rating which is given mainly because the hotel fronts the beach.
Needles to say we will never stay at an Altinel hotel ever again.

Just spent 2 weeks at Etap Altinel, we came back the 7/08/08, we had a fabulous time. We read all reviews before we went and to be honest were terrified at what we were about to encounter, as most of the reviews were awful. We arrived around 2 am and were instantly given our rooms x3 which were all lovely and clean, had 3 single beds and plenty of room for the cot, a lcd tv,(with 3 english channels) mini fridge, great aircon,telephone,hairdryer that was better than mine, and balcony overlooking pool. The maid was in 6 times per week, and towels were changed if you left them in the bath or on floor daily also. We travelled with 3 children and baby of 9 months and found the pools were spotless, there was a huge pool where pool games were played, a jacuzzi, a baby pool and then a toddler pool, and then around 20/30 metres away was another pool with 3 water slides, which my kids thoughts were great. The hotel grounds were also lovely, lots of greenery, and beautiful flowers, and swept daily. Scattered around were plenty of sunbeds and brollys, same for the beach. They had what we called 2 catbaskets, which you need to get up around 6.30 to get these, and they were basically, huge half circle wicker baskets, which had big squishy cushions offering complete shade and overlooking the sea, great for the kids, or just for a bit of privacy. The food, yes was sometimes a little repetative, but they did try to alternate it with turkish nite (kebabs),soups, rice dishes,that many different salads and pasta's, mash,chipped,wedges and roast potatoes, chicken,beef?,fish, burgers,and the most delicious cakes and deserts, and at 2.30-5.00 you could go to the snack bar and have burger and chips,salad and pasta. If there is a down side to me was being just a little too far from Bodrum town, as you were in the middle of nowhere, it was only 15 minutes by dolmus (which you picked up at the hotel) into Bodrum, but if you like to go for walks around harbours or towns without getting a bus then this isn't the place to go. This is a beautiful, totally relaxing sunshine paradise, we are now looking to go back next year, would give this hotel 9/10, staff I would give 10/10 and cleanliness I would also give 9/10. Go have a great holiday and please don't worry, just make sure you are not allocated rooms in the 500's as apparently these rooms were previously staff quarters and have not been renovated and are apparently horrid. The shop on site is extremley expensive, try and buy your items from Bodrum as half the price, and watch out for the jumping spiders and cockroaches, you get bugs where ever you go, but these spiders were huge (the film arachnaphobia came straight to mind) lol.

I had asked specifically for a 4 or 5 star accommodation with half board or all inclusive. Goldtrail sold me Etap Alinel in Guvercinlik bodrum, made extravagant promises as to the quality of the hotel and the brilliant reviews that they had from customers. Once we got there it was a completely different story. It was disgusting, with stains on the pillows, rusty doors and bathrooms. Dirty floors, sinks, toilets and baths, it really was uninhabitable. The rest of the hotel is in tatters, everything from the pool side bar to the sunbeds were filthy and rotting. The sport facilities were far from useable and clearly unsafe. There were building materials and discarded beds and other items all in open display. When we called goldtrail to complain, they told us that in fact this was not a 5 star accommodation but a 5 sun accommodation. In all honesty, this hotel cannot be 5 anything. Even the food looked horrid and everybody we spoke to at the hotel was unhappy. I would never go back.

Spent the first 2 weeks of June here. The hotel seemed to have ongoing problems with overbooking. we were put into an annex to the main hotel. Talk about grim! More like a backpackers hostel than a 4star hotel. it turned out to be staff quarters! We kicked up a stink and got moved next day to a decent room in the main hotel. It wasn't a one off situation, over the next 2 weeks we saw and spoke to lots of people who were really upset to have been put into this substandard accomodation. Once relocated our room was fine. Food good, waiters and bar staff OK. Hotel not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as there are no lifts and there are steps with no handrails all over the place. Nice grounds with pretty seating areas dotted around. Sea crystal clear. Plenty of sunbeds around the pool and beach. Beware of the Turkish Bath mans claim that the oils they use will protect you from the sun but allow you to get a great tan. We saw silly a silly woman who actually believed that she wouldn't need to use suntan lotion after her bath, burned to a crisp within a couple of hours! Our main complaint (apart from the overbooking) was about the 'animation' team playing VERY, VERY loud music around the pool area ALL DAY LONG! So loud in fact that we gave up trying to listen to our own MP3 players as we couldn't hear them over the racket! It was a real spoiler on what could have been a great holiday.

So much better than expected

Was a bit worried what we were going to based on last years reviews but this hotel has been completely refurbished. The hotel is out of the town but you can catch the bus into Bodrum, it's only £1 each way. The rooms are basic but clean, but who goes on holiday to stay in their room. Towels changed daily. There is a variety of food with something for everyone. They have barbecued food every night alongside other hot food and plenty of salads. There was a fish restaurant opening the week after we were there. The variety continues outside where you can sit around the pool/bar area or sit in the big wicker furniture spread all round the grounds. There is a lot of decked areas including the jetty out to the sea, a popular sunbathing area. Beware though if you are a spirit drinker that only gin, vodka and brandy is free on the all-inclusive deal as these are the only spirits produced locally. Could benefit from having more for kids to do, their own little club perhaps. Staff were great and we would no hesitation in recommending this to anyone.

Have just returned from this hotel having stayed there for 7 days all inclusive with my friend in her 50's - staff were lovely and food was nice (could be quite repetitive though with salads) Breakfast was best meal of the day with fresh omlette made in front of you - well worth trying!!! Chef's were very talented with presentation of food and all the chefs and staff looked imaculate all the time. House keeping came on a daily basis changing bin liners and towels and cleaning the room. The room we had was directly above the DJ stand which was not very good late at night and the music was repetative. Local bus stopped outside the hotel (on a 15 min basis) and took you to bodrum for 2 lira each way. We had no issues with the hotel just with out travel guide - who told us nothing. Only thing I can say negative about the hotel is that they charge you 30 lira deposit for your room which is refunded when you check out - our tour operator didnt tell us and people on our coach didnt have money with them.
Overall a good holiday and accomodation - but if your a adventurer and like early morning walks the hotel is'nt central. It's a great hotel for relaxing!!!

Top Local Tips for Bodrum
getting the bus to Bodrum Make sure you don't waste money on taxi's. The buses go and come back from Bodrum every 10 minutes. Walk out to the road and wait next to the road the buses will stop and pick you up no worries.
Barber If your a man i recommend going for a proper shave, its quite an experience!!!!
Hong Kong Restaurant, Bodrum The Hong Kong restaurant offers a free shuttle transfere to their restaurant on request (a man will hand leaflets out around the pool - speaks excellent English). Just tell him the time you want to be colllect from lobbey and he will be there in an top class air conditioned mini bus. Food is great (they even pick you up for a Full English Breakfast (and believe it, you will need a few nights eating away from the hotel- read above).

The main part off the complex itself was nice, plenty off sun beds around the pool and on the beach(go on boat trip from a guy at beach, good day out)
The hotel is out of the way so if you want nightlife you have to get a bus into the centre. Some staff friendly, some not.
