We thought this 4* star hotel was more of a 2/3* quality, the only thing good about the hotel was the reception and the room service. The hotel boasts a gym which was more like a small room with a couple of exercise machines, a fairly decent swimming pool with a great view but that's about it! The hotel room was very basic & old fashioned in 1980's style. There is nothing to do in this location, although the tram line is just opposite the hotel so if you want a quick look around the shops it only takes 5-10 mins or so and your in the centre, not much do to, not a pretty location, we won't be rushing back!

Swissotel is a comfortable and pleasant hotel, which would appeal more to the business oriented traveller than the family. The pickup service picks you up directly from the airport. Just next door to a metro/train station, it is easily approachable from any destination. The rooms on the upper floors, where I had a chance of staying, provided a pleasant view of the urban Zurich. Next door is a small market which is also worth a browse. All in all I would recommend this hotel.

Great view, excellent location

Stayed 3 nights, 2 adults and 3 kids. Provided 2 rooms with interconnecting door. Opposite Oerlikon railway station and shopping centre and halfway between airport and city centre. Tram and busess stp outside and hotel provides free shuttle to and from airport every 20 minutes. Starbucks downstairs. Excellent breakfast, included in price. Great view from room. Very helpful staff.

Excellent for stopovers

We are A family of 2 adults and 2 kids stayed at swissotel for 3 nights as a stopover we took the family room which was very nice with 2 seperate rooms an adults room and the kids room the kids room was filled with toys and chocolates which my daughters loved and they had their own tv. The breakfeast was very good with every thing. staff very friendly. Pool fabuolas with excellent views.

Traveling with a group for 4 nites, one would think that everything would go smoothly since it was all pre-arranged. But, no. Not at all. There were missing reservations, hours to resolve the problems (thank goodness we all had our own documentaion of our reservations). The front dest seemed more concerned over what went wrong, then actually putting their customers in the rooms.
Also, upon our check out, we were charged almost $75chp for breakfasts, although they were included in our package. So, check your bill and don't just express check out.
Additionally, one of our group had her purse stolen from the hotel restaurant. Again, the hotel staff wasn't too quick to assist. The server wanted to put the wine away before he would talk to us....it was 9:30 in the morning!! Simply, just rude on his part. The purse was never recovered but a sign with a warning was placed up within minutes. The restaurant manager was kind enough to provide a cell phone to use incase we needed to call someone or be called by police. Unfortunately, when we went to use it the keys were locked and no one showed us how to unlock it.
Never the less, the rooms were clean. They had blow dyers and safes. Bell service and housekeeping service were good. We loved the location to the train and trams - which gave easy access to everything. The bar was nice, but expensive (which isn't unusual for a hotel bar). The pool area was good. The bed was comfortable.
I would recommend this place more for a business trip than a couple or family traveling. However if it's a quick weekend trip and you want easy access to all of Zurich it's good for the right price.

Nice hotel, great pool

We stayed at the Swissotel in March 06 for 3 nights. We thought it was a great hotel - large room, comfy bed and good shower and hairdryer! The view from the room was quite built up, with a view of the train station but you could also see the mountains in the distance. The pool on the 32nd floor was fantastic - both times we went we were the only ones there. The reception staff were very helpful in recommending local restaurants. Unlike the previous reviewer, our key cards worked every time. The journey into the centre was only 15 minutes by tram, so we didn't the feel that the location was a problem. Would definitely stay there again!

Functional, no frills, just a place to sleep.

Hubby and I stayed for 2 nights in July 2005. It's a mini skyscraper-looking hotel. Room was modern and functional, with a view of the train station below, but soundproofed so no noise to disturb sleep. The bed is just foam, not very comfy. Reception staff was fine.
The best part: the fitness center on the 32nd floor. Amazing views from huge pool and jacuzzi. Dry sauna, wet sauna, rainforest shower with six showerheads, tiled lounge chairs.
Worst part: our key card kept not working. Especially irritating when dripping wet from the pool, standing in the hallway in your swimsuit, then having to go down to the front desk to have card redone in swimsuit. This happened several times, luckily only once in the swimsuit, but quite an irritant. Another bad thing: the 15 minute train or trolley ride into the city center. We didn't mind because we got such a cheap rate at this hotel, but next time, I'd prefer to stay in the downtown part rather than out here in the Industrial section of Oerliken. Won't stay here again.

Very, Very Good Hotel

I stayed from Boxing Day until New Year with my wife and 2 children. Having read some of the reviews I nearly cancelled, thank goodness I didnt, I even wondered if I was staying in the same hotel that some reviewers had written about. From the moment we arrived the car park was large, easy and well lit, the staff couldnt have been more helpful, the kids interconnecting room was specially done out with kids toys and duvets, everything in the rooms worked and was spotlessly clean, the inclusive breakfast was exceptional, the dinners we took in the hotel were very good, the 32nd floor leisure suite was relaxing with unbelievable views, in fact it was just a very relaxing break. The station is literally next door and trains into centre of Zurich run approx every 5 to 7 mins (and with typical Swiss effieciency you can set your watch by them). Around the hotel there are some good restaurants and some intersting shops.
The hotel was also exceptional value and once again I must reiterate how helpful and pleasant all the staff were.
I travel and stay in hotels of all different standards for business, this was without a doubt amongst the best in its class, if not top of its class as a functional business/family hotel.
Will I stay there again? Without a doubt !!

Very good hotel

Stayed at this hotel after christmas. One gets the bus outside the arrival hall. Well signposted for buses to all hotels. There was a shuttle bus every 40 minutes to Swissotel. Check-in was efficient and friendly. Room was fine. I took a tram into the centre, very reasonable and gentleman at station was very helpful. One can take either a train or 11 tram into the centre. Opposite the hotel is a small shopping centre with various clothing stores, supermarket and deli. There are interesting shops all around the hotel. The breakfast included in the price was excellent. However, there is a Starbucks for those who need a coffee or who dont have breakfast included in their room rate. I will stay here again.

Unhelpful staff, disgusting room

My wife and stayed at this hotel, having stayed at several other Swissotel's which have been excellent (Berlin, for example). This one is completed different and bears no relation to others in the chain. I feels more like a cheap 2* hotel which has had poor maintenance. The first room we were given had stained carpets and sofa, ancient and dirty bathroom and had an extremely unpleasant odour. Amazingly our complaint was met with a frosty response and an upgrade refused unless we paid extra. A chat with the manager (who was helpful) yielded a free upgrade to a 'business class' room. Whilst clean this room was still cramped and quite dated, and certainly way below the standard of other Swissotel's we have stayed in. If you are unfortunate enough to stay here insist on a business class room - the others are terrible!

Apart from the frosty reception, the hotel was very good value. Clean rooms, good room service,excellant gym /swimming pool (fab view of city) and a bar that served good cocktails. About 15 mins from the main town centre by tram and a free shuttle service from the airport, who can complain at £70 per night? Hotel near a small shopping centre, also very interesting food market on Saturdays just outside, perfect to buy cheese etc. A good choice for a weekend break.

Loved the view from the swimming pool

This is a real big hotel with all facilities needed. Our room and bathroom were nice, it should have been a bit cleaner (luckily not so dirty as the previous reviewer) but the size was okay, view was nice and looked quite modern. The reception was huge with a big restaurant, Starbucks, travel agency (and lots of conference rooms on the first floor). Breakfast was really great, lots of choice, one of the best in Switzerland we had. Swimming pool and sauna on the top floor were nice with a superb view over Zurich. There is not so much to do in the direct environment, although there were some restaurants nearby. Luckily the train and the tram are next to the hotel which bring you directly to the centre of Zurich.

Top Local Tips for Zurich

Gratuities Tipping is not a norm in Switzerland. The normal 15% - 20% in the US is extremely high for the Swiss. 5% is normally an accepted amount for really good service. Unlike the US, tips are not the primary earnings for wait staff and cab drivers, etc. and it is already part of the bill. We found out about this norm after spending more than $100 in tips within 5 days. Its no wonder that we found ourselves getting really good service after we signed the bill (help with putting on my jacket, etc.).

Boat Ride If you have not been to Zurich, take the boat ride on lake Zurich after a stroll down Bahnhofstrasse.

S Bahn Zurich does not have a metro system, but a wide network of trams and a suburban railway system to get around the centre of the city and to reach the surrounding districts. A 24 hour ticket is handy. You can buy it for different combinations of Zones. Zone 10, for example, is most of the central area and costs CHF 7.80 for 24 continuous hours and is not limited to a single calendar day
