Historical Traveller Reviews of St. Josef Hotel
What a great find
We spent three nights at the St Joseph and considering how expensive Zurich is, this hotel is excellent value for money. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, there is a guest laundry and the hotel restaurant offers a special deal for guests - and the meals were great. Breakfast was one of the best we had in our four week trip of Central Europe.
It is an easy walk to the train station and into the main shopping and sightseeing disctrict but is out of the way of the main action so is relaively quiet. I would recemmend this hotel and consider it a great find. Thanks to all those reviewers who helped us make the decision to stay there.
very convenient location
You couldn't get too much of a better location in Zurich, especially for the price of this place. It is less than five minutes walk from the main station and the main shopping street Bahnhoffstrasse. It is also near a large supermarket so you can stock up on supplies if you want(there is a fridge in room).
My room was clean and breakfast was really good and a pretty large selection.
My one comment about the place is that it used to be a student dormitory and it shows. The rooms feel like a dormitory, not that comfortable or stylish and with those really annoying bright flourescent lights. Its fine but I found it hard to relax after a long day of business meetings, and would have preferred something with a bit more cozyness or atmosphere, I think. Also its on a busy street so in the morning you can hear a lot of traffic.
Some of the staff were helpful, but others weren't at all and couldn't/wouldn't answer any questions about some basic directions around Zurich. Overall it was ok and you can't beat the location, but not that relaxing.
Very impressed, great Hotel
We recently stayed at the Pension St Josef in Zurich for 2 nights and loved it! Our double room was very spacious and had a lovely cot for my toddler son at no extra charge. They only had a room with a shared bathroom available and I was a bit sceptical about sharing especially with a small child, but the bathrooms were great - very modern and clean, my son loved the huge shower. We also had a wash basin + mirror in our room which was a bonus. For breakfast we expected only criossants/bread and jam, but were pleasantly surprised! There was a huge buffet with cereals, different breads, spreads, meats, cheese, yogurt, fruit, hot and cold drinks. The location is fantastic with a short stroll to the main station and the Old Town. the staff were very friendly, I have no complaints and will stay there again without thinking twice.
Great localtion and excellent value
We recently spent 4 wonderful days at the Hotel St Josef, which we chose based on TripAdivsor reviews. The hotel was fantastic, extremely well located, quiet, spotlessly clean and the breakfasts great. There are steps leading up to the road (Hirschengraben) in which the hotel is located, but they are quite manageable (and I have arthritis in both my feet). However, if you want to avoid the steps it is possible to walk along the Seilergraben for about 30m (a road parallel to Hirschengraben) and then walk up a ramp that will bring you right outside the Hotel St Josef. Our room had a refrigerator which was great as we could buy food from the local Coop rather than always eating out in pricey Zurich restaurants. If you are after great value for money, I would highly recommend this hotel.
We spent two nights here last week. The hotel is very close to the train station. However, since we had lots of luggage and there were steps leading up to the hotel, we took a taxi. Beware of taxis at the train station. I'm pretty sure we were ripped off. However, since we were so tired, we didn't bother arguing with the driver. Anyway, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I mentioned in my email to them that my mom has asthma and upon our arrival they gave her a pillow and duvet cover designed for people with asthma. Our room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also clean. However, we didn't have a shower stall so every time we took a shower the floor got wet; but, it wasn't that bad. I later discovered that we had a handicap room. Regular rooms have shower stalls. The breakfast was wonderful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others. The price was very reasonable for such an expensive city.
Convenient location, large clean room, some traffic noise
We stayed at this hotel in October 2006. The room we had was quite large by european standards and we were very pleased with the accomodations. The location is very convenient to the train station and the hotel provided excellent directions on their website. We had no trouble finding it, even though we arrived at 11:00 at night and were very tired. The only negative comment I have is that we found the street traffic noise to be somewhat bothersome. We live in a more rural setting and are not accustom to any kind of city noise. Other travelers may not find the traffic noise bothersome at all. Also, I would like to mention that we found the front desk personnel to be very friendly and helpful. We were trying to find a battery charger for our camera and the front desk staff were very helpful in suggesting camera shops we could try and even making several phone calls for us. I would definately recommend this hotel.
Fantastic food. Nice and clean rooms which are quite big. Very convenient location. Only caution - there is a flight of steps between the station and the hotel - which can be problematic when you have luggage.
a real bargain
I chose the St Josef after reading TripAdvisor, and it was a great choice.
The convenient location, clean and pleasant rooms, helpful staff, and bargain (for Zurich) prices, as described in previous reviews, are the great advantages of this hotel.
We spent two separate nights there. The first stay, we were in a separate building, across a small courtyard from the main building and check-in. The second stay, we were in the main building. We liked the "annex" building much better -- our room was larger and brighter.
t have found a better location
Spent a couple of nights at the Pension St. Josef and I have found my hotel in Zurich. I had business at the University and it is perfectly located about halfway between the Hauptbahnhof and the main University buildings. My room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The breakfast was very good and plentiful -- first rate! The staff was VERY helpful.
My only suggestions would be to ask for a room in the back of the hotel. The front of the hotel looks over Seilergraben and can be a bit noisy with passing traffic and trams. The price to value ratio is good for a city like Zurich.
Great value for Zurich.
This hotel is a real find in such an expensive city (and country). Short walk from the station - yes, there are stairs, but not too many. Had a lovely, large room at the end of the corridor, which overlooked a quiet area. European-style bathroom ie. the shower floor is not separated from the rest of the bathroom, but that wasn't a problem as the bathroom was large enough to suffice. Great hospitality and friendly staff. Good breakfast with a wide selection. Get their recommendation for the local vegetarian buffet restaurant - pricey, but worth the treat. For other meals, recommend buying food from the local supermarket (Co-Op) - food is terribly expensive in Switzerland in general and this option is the only way we could afford to eat (we weren't the only ones - it's packed with locals and tourists). Several branches - closest is opposite the station. Would definitely return to this hotel.
