I have enjoyed staying at the Florhof many times. I find it an outstanding value for the money. This attractive building reminds me of an archbishop's residence. It is located in a quiet area a good stretch of the legs from the famous churches, museums, opera house, fenicular, railway station, shopping and financial district. There is limited parking. A flight of outside steps leads to the reception area; an accommodating porter takes care of the luggage. There is a small elevator inside from the public rooms to guest bedrooms. The staff is friendly and helpful. Bathrooms are handsomely tiled and well equipped. Room service is available; but the bed rooms are not spacious enough to order more than the excellent continental breakfast. A request for ice produces no more than a few cubes. The hotel's restaurant is outstanding and a favorite of locals. The regional specialties and wines are superior. There is an indoor dining room and a lovely outdoor patio for lunch and dinner in fine weather. The restaurant is closed Sundays. There is heat, but no air conditioning; the latter is seldom needed and the adjustable windows provide ventilation plus the sounds of the hotel's gentle fountain and classical music from the conservatory next door.

Top Local Tips for Zurich

Trains, buses, and trams Getting around Zurich is amazingly easy, starting with your arrival at the international airport. There are 230 trains a day that stop at the airport train station. Central Zurich is only 12 minutes away and there is a train leaving almost every 10 minutes at times. The Central Station is huge, but connections can be made pretty quickly. Buy a 2nd class day ticket for CHF 12 (maybe CHF 15 depending on zone) and for the next 24 hours you can take any train, tram, or bus in the city. Tickets are rarely checked but do not be tempted to travel free. Get caught and it's a big fine. At one point three inspectors got on and checked everyone's ticket. You can also set your watch by the trains, which are almost always on time, are clean, and comfortable. I went to Germany on this trip and found the trains to be often late, not so clean, and even had inoperable restrooms and standing room only. The Swiss get top marks for public transportation.

Mobile Phones Charging mobile phones can be tricky as Switzerland uses a connection I have never seen. Luckily the receptionist was very helpful and eventually put two pieces together. Check this out before you get here. For some reason I could not call international numbers with my mobile but this may be peculiar to my phone.

Zurich Card The Zurich Card is good value for gaining access to attractions and use on public transport. We used it to get up to the top of the Uetliberg mountain and just this trip alone meant that the card "paid for itself".
