In the "old town", as they call it, and stones throw from "new". Very nicely decorated, modern and squeaky clean. Only difficulty was finding the place - make sure you get directions!!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Adler

Loved the Adler

from sunflower7777
Booked the Adler after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. It was an extremely clean, new looking and cute hotel. I paid around $165 dollars a night (booked thru expedia) and this included a nice breakfast and internet. The area was great, right in the middle of restaurants and shopping and I would say it's less than a 10 minute walk from the main train station. All in all I would say it's a great value, especially in Zurich where everything is a zillion dollars.

Adler - great!

from dassie
I have to agree with your other reviewers. A very good hotel in an ideal situation. Clean and bright rooms, duvets on the beds a plus, free internet access a must for the modern traveller, very good restaurant, friendly helpful staff. This was our last stop of a three week, three country trip and being handed, on check in, a city information booklet complete with map was a first for us. Plenty of other traveller/tourist information in the room and at reception.

Have already recommended the Adler to family and friends, and will return there when next I'm in Zurich.

However, the directions to the hotel were not as clear or precise as they could have been. We were told 500 metres from the Station, a 10 minute walk. Walk if you must. But if you have heavy baggage take a taxi. I'm sure it's more than 500 metres, there are a few busy roads to cross and cobbled streets are not great for suitcase dragging.
Shuttle bus to the airport a bargain. Cheaper, and easier, than the taxi plus train alternative.

A great find

from Belmont94002
I have stayed at a lot of hotels, as many of you have and have concluded that the most important criteria for me are: A comfortable place to sleep, clean, and well located. Price does not have to be the most important point.

I found the Adler to meet all of the requirements and more. The staff was very professional. The rooms had internett access for an extra charge. The hotel has a free internet computer in the upstairs lobby. The rooms were quiet. The location is central to the old city and close to the train station. The rooms were clean. Breakfast was very nice. The price was a bargain. The evening restaurant is lively and satisfying.

I would love to stay at the Adler again. I wish I could find a hotel like this where ever I travel. If I did, I would beat my budget and be happy for the experience.

Loved it. Great for leisure and business travel

I have stayed at many hotels in Zurich including Sofitel, Hilton etc. They are all good and this hotel is great. It is located right off Limmatquai street and 5 mins walk from the main train station.

Pros: Location, Location, Location. Smack in the middle of cafes, restaurants, shops, bookstores. Cobblestone streets, no cars allowed. Great rooms. Very clean, modern, comfy beds, murals of local landscape, wireless internet access (5US$ for 30 mins), free internet PC in lounge, nice bathroom with good water pressure, nice restaurant, complimentary breakfast (much better than expected, and serves awesome Swiss coffee), reasonable priced, very nice staff. Shuttle to Zurich airport costs 25CHF for two.

We had a room facing the courtyard, so it was quiet. We could hear some people partying outside one night, but it was not very loud.

We will stay here again.

Great value in an expensive city

from A TripAdvisor Member
Usually one expects tradeoffs in return for reasonable hotel rates. If a hotel is less expensive, it is usually in a less desirable location than others, or older, spartan or less desirable in some way. The Adler looked really good on its website, and the rate was really attractive, so I wondered what I might be giving up.

I travel extensively on business in North America and Europe. Having stayed there for three nights, January 30-February 2, 2005, I can say that the Adler is one of the best values I have come across anywhere. I didn't see any tradeoffs for the great price.

Because Zurich is so compact, one can walk everywhere. The Adler is right across the tiny Limmat River from the commercial office district and a five minute walk from the train station (Hauptbahnhof). The Adler vicinity is actually more cafe and pedestrian oriented than the other side of the river, where most of the expensive shops line the Bahnhofstrasse.

The rooms are very comfortable, impeccably clean and modern. Even the smallest rooms have a good desk, well-appointed bathroom and a safe, which as a runner I really appreciate. There is a lounge on the first floor with comfortable couch and free internet terminal. I did not eat in the restaurant, but it has received good reviews elsewhere.

The staff is friendly and helpful. Other reviewers have commented on street noise. I heard none even though my room faced onto the square. This may have been because I was there outside the summer tourist season.

The breakfast merits special mention: cereal, yogurt, a variety of juices, breads fruits and cheeses. They even had the International Herald Tribune.

I will definitely return to the Adler and recommend it to anyone.

Great Location

from Terri Eggeman
I stayed at the Adler Dec 16-22,2004 after reading the good reviews on this site. The location was wonderful. A short walk from the train station and the Banhofstrasse . One of the city's Christmas markets was right outside the hotel. Really enjoyed visiting there. The first night was a little noisy with a slamming door right below us until late but the rest of the week was fine. The beds were comfortable and the rooms clean and well taken care of though not large. Enjoyed the Zurich city paintings on the wall by the local artist.
The Adler offered a nice breakfast which is a real plus since everything in the city is so expensive. We also had dinner at the resturant one night and the food was excellent. I recommend the veal Zurich style with the rosti potatos. Service in the resturant was very good and the staff at the desk was very helpful. I would stay at the Adler again if in Zurich.

Nice place and price!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here with my family for two nights in January per recommendations of this website. Found a great price (by expensive Switzerland standards) online. The room was a little small, but very adequate. The breakfast buffet was tasty for European standards. The location is very nice, on pedestrian way in the old town and yet accessible to all the sights. The restaurant downstairs looked great (supposedly a good fondue place), but we were sad to discover that we needed reservations when we got turned away because they were so busy. We would definitely return here and recommend it to others.

Best experience in a 2 week trip

from LAgirl_in_London
I stayed in this hotel at the end of a 2-week trip to France, Italy and Switzerland. The location is great, the restaurant is amazing and has great Swiss food. The service was great, the rooms were modern and complete with everything you would ever need. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever stayed in. I can't say enough about this hotel. I would stay here again in a second (and will I'm sure) and would recommend it to anyone who wants a tasteful, comfortable and modern place thats local to everything in Zurich.

Modern, central, and reasonable rates

from jkerouac110
My wife and I stayed here in October 2004 and were extremely happy with the Hotel. Our room was extremely modern, perhaps due to a recent renovation, and looked onto a small arts & crafts fair in a courtyard behind the hotel. The hotel is is an area of nightclubs, so late-night noise could be a problem if you face the front, but this was not the case for us. We walked over from the train station and the hotel was very easy to find. We appreciated the free Internet terminal, even though we were flying home first thing in the a.m. Excellent, typical Swiss breakfast. I would stay there again, especially if I wanted an extremely central location and a variety of nightlife.

Friendly hotel, great location, free internet

from babygoon
The Hotel Adler is in a very good location in the old town pedestrian zone area and an easy walk from the main downtown train station.

We arrived early morning and did not expect our hotel room to be ready but when we arrived they asked if we wanted a smoking or non-smoking floor (which we were pleasantly surprised about) and said they would have a room prepared soon. They invited us to sit in the restaurant and have coffee (no charge). Our room was ready by around 9 a.m. so we were able to check in, unpack and have the rest of the day free for sightseeing.

We were given room 315, a small double facing the back courtyard. Nice room with minibar fridge, small safe, bright spotless bathroom with tub/shower combo. Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant was a nice selection of breads, cheeses, fruit, yogurt and probably the best coffee we had on this trip.

One of the nice perks of this hotel was a computer in the first floor sitting room with free internet. On the downside, this area of town is noisy due to all the clubs and restaurants nearby. A live band set up in the courtyard restaurant below our room and the music was very loud until after midnight. However, the windows are pretty well soundproofed so by closing the window we could seal out much of the noise. We were there on a Friday night so I do not know if the party atmosphere takes place on weekday evenings

Top Local Tips for Zurich

Art buffs going to Zurich: Don't miss Wintertür's world class art musem I was blown away by the world-class art at this museum in a sleepy little town about an hour's train ride from Zurich. The Expressionists rank highly, and a Kirchner exhibit was on when I first went. At times I was the only person in a room, save for the random guards. I look forward to going back and spending another enjoyable afternoon among "friends."

Zurich Card Zurich offers a tourist card to visitors which, as well as including access to transport services of Zurich Public Transport in the greater Zurich area, offers free admission to over 40 museums. In addition, you'll receive reduced admission to the Zoo Zurich, a complimentary welcome drink in over 20 restaurants, plus a number of other discounts. The card is valid for 24 or 72 hours (approximately 15 - 30 CHF) and is available from tourist services inside Zurich Hauptbanhof and from many hotels.

Rhine Falls I recommend vising Rhine Falls, its only an hour from Zurich and worth the visit.
