I got a good price, so I love it

I managed to get this 4-star hotel through priceline at a 2 or 3 star price so overall, I liked it. The staff could be friendlier, but it is clear they have a lot of clientelle and are very busy, however they speak perfect english. The hotel is located a good 5 or 10 minute walk to the tram station, which is another 15 minutes from downtown Zurich. However I will say the rooms are a decent size, lots of channels on the TV, and really clean. We both slept really well.

Breakfast costs 30 CHF (probably not worth it), and airport shuttle is 15 CHF per person (maybe worth it, but for us it was free to take the tram to the train station and then onto the airport and I could pick up Bratwurst and chocolate along the way).

There is a gym with a jacuzzi, pool, tanning beds, sauna...etc. I would say overall, I can see why some people on this board complain about it not being a great four-star hotel, however it is still a four-star hotel.

Still a 4 star

We stayed at the IC Zurich two times. It is not the latest addition to the chain, but still a 4 star property with health club, bar and restaurants. Tram and bus stops are a short walk away and it is a 10min ride to Paradeplatz / Bahnhofstrasse. The rooms need an update, but they still fit a 4 * scheme, some are better. The front desk staff is absolutely InterContinental, very friendly, they are real hospitality professionals. The breakfast is unspectacular, all the usual cold and warm stuff plus a small Japanese corner. As guest with IC status I got always the expected privileges. Will stay there again.

Do not Stay Here...

If you are expecting the quality of an InterContinental Hotel...do not stay here! I am a frequent business traveller and I have stayed at many ICs around the world. This one is not of the same quality. The reason for my visit was to co-facilitate a training program, so unfortunately we subjected many of our innocent colleagues to this hotel as well.
To start out, the location is really terrible. Zurich traffic is a nightmare and unless you're prepared to use the tram and switch, getting a taxi to come out between 4 and 6 PM takes forever. Once you're in the taxi, the ride to just about anywhere takes forever during this time period. You cannot walk to the center of Zurich and the area aound it is not very interesting unless you're there to see a soccer match (it's close to a stadium). The hotel lobby is fine, but just next to it is the breakfast restaurant (which also serves lunch and dinner buffet) which is an ugly cafeteria style restaurant with no warmth or atmosphere. The bar is ok, but the better restaurant just past the bar is not very special. The food is just ok and the service (while somewhat friendly) is inconsistent and slow. Our lunches there took way too long. Overall, the staff of the hotel seems to try, but it's such a disappointing place that they probably have a hard time getting excited to work there everyday. The worst thing about the hotel is the bedrooms! They are tired and in desparate need of updating. My assistant had kindly reserved an executive room for me. I shudder to think what a normal room is like. I had an ugly mauve leather loveseat in my room to go with the rest of dark pinkish decor. The built in (tiny) closet has a few nasty grey plastic hangars and set a shelves. There was a desk with internet/monitor. The bathroom was extremely basic, although the staff was generous with soap,shampoo, lotion. The shower tub had a shower curtain!!!! I was in shock from this. I don't think I've ever had a shower curtain in any European hotel - yuck! But the worst was the bed - it looked like a metal framed portable bed and was extremely uncomfortable. I am not someone who has trouble sleeping naturally in hotels and on planes - I never need sleeping aids and I typically never suffer from jet lag...but I found it hard to sleep in this bed because it was so uncomfortable.
I do have one positive - the conferencing staff was very helpful and attentive - a bright spot in an otherwise dismal stay. They tried really hard to meet our requests and no request was too much for them. Too bad they have so little to work with at this hotel, because it could be so much better.

Comfortable place

I had some misgivings about booking this hotel after reading the reviews of our American friends. However on arrival any concerns were quickly forgotten.I was allocated a top floor room with a double bed,something I had requested in advance due to my above average height. It was quite spacious with nice furnishings and a spotless bathroom.The reception was also of a high standard with a comfortable seating area.The hotel has a cosy if somewhat pricey bar with a pianist most evenings.The breakfast room was bright and cheerful with a good choice of Continental and cooked breakfasts.The Hotel is a little out of town but a tram gets you to the centre in 10 minutes for 3f 80c or for those in a hurry a taxi is 25f. The staff were most courteous throughout all areas. Zurich is a compact city with the shops, museums, churches and Lake Zurich withing easy walking distance of one another so the location of the Hotel is not a problem.The main sites can all be seen within two days.A lovely city worth a visit and I would certainly recommend this Hotel.

A 3 star Hotel - AVOID

I stayed at the Intercontinental for one night - 30th June - 1st July 2005. The hotel situated approximately 15 minutes from the main railway station, and is opposite a Citroen garage. It is not in pleasant surroundings, and the rooms are tiny. The breafast was fine but the service was poor. The hotel is classified as a 4 star or even a 5 star. I would rate it a three star. Avoid at all costs - spend you funds at a hotel located either downstown or next to the lake.

Least favorite Intercontinental

The main reason I stayed here was the availability of an airport shuttle. I have never stayed at a hotel where you pay for the hotel's airport shuttle. It cost 30 francs each way, even though there were other people in the shuttle. We booked it for 8 AM the morning of our flight. We were late leaving the hotel, due to some guests oversleeping. We had to fight for a cup of coffee in the morning. At 7 AM, we went to the restaurant and we were advised to go to the bar to get our coffee. Went to the bar, and the bar was closed. After that we complained at the front desk, where they sent us back to the restaurant. Finally, they agreed to sell us a cup of coffee. This hotel should not be an Intercontinental.

Dissapointing

I stayed here last October, with my mother thankfully just for one night. I booked through the Intercon website and am an ambassador member of their Priority club. We had one standard room and one executive. The executive featured peeling wallpaper and shabby bathroom with torn bath panel. The other room was tiny and the bathroom had cigarette burns in plastic sink/vanity unit. We both found the beds very uncomfortable and didn't sleep well. The standard Intercontinal internet links ,phone with voicemail and alarm etc. were there but otherwise what I expect of 2/3 star hotel. Of the public areas the bar felt dated and the drinks expensive . Brakfast was OK but felt more like airport/dept. store cafeteria that a decent hotel. I must say the staff were mostly friendly and efficient,with the exception of the valet parking who took 30 mins to return my car whilst I stood waiting with my disabled mother!! Given this and the out of the way location the place has little to recommend it.

Nice for the Business traveler

I stayed here on business last fall and thought it was fine. I can't believe how whiny some of the other reviews are. Yes, it is not in the old city, which is where most of the fun stuff is, but it's only a ten minute tram ride away. Not exactly difficult. The room was not bad, we actually had a nice bathroom and they had fruit, chocolate and wine waiting in the room for us when we arrived.
Zurich itself was great. Have the concierge arrange a night tour for you. Ours was great. The river is beautiful at night with all the lights and there are plenty of fun shops and restaurants in the old city. We also met some friendly people who wanted us to go barhopping with them, but we didn't have time!
Zurich is worth at least a night or two stay, and this hotel is fine if you aren't looking for luxury or something in the old town. Since it was our last night in Europe, we had a few drinks in the bar. The staff was polite and attentive, we quite enjoyed ourselves. Yes, the drinks are expensive, they are that way everywhere in Switzerland.

Awful Intercontinental

Having stayed at a number of Intercontinentals, I read the reviews, but elected to stay at the Zurich IC despite what had been written. Big mistake. The hotel is rather far from the city center. The area is one of local commerce (many car dealers and service stations). The staff was solicitous and pleasant, but that does not make up for being a 30 minute tram ride (2 or 3 lines) from downtown. The tram stop is a long block walk from the hotel. Being an "Ambassador", my room was upgraded to "Executive" room. I shudder to think what a standard room must be like! The bathroom is akin to a Motel 6 (although the shower faucet was great with lots of water pressure). The room was small and very plain with built-in style desk and closet. The double bed was wonderful with high thread count sheets. The television had a loud buzzing noise which made it unwatchable. There are no views whatsoever from any of the rooms. I would try to dissuade a potential Zurich visitor from staying here; in fact I would put Zurich on my "pass" list, period.

Great service - small rooms - would stay again

I stayed here on business and read some of the reviews before traveling. The hotel is not downtown - but it is on a tram line - it is quiet (at least when I was there). The service was very good - the rooms are small - but hey - it is Europe. The food was above average......I will likely stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Zurich

Hidden bar Next to the main station, there is a museum with a very nice bar in the interior court. Sunny and peaceful.

Zurich Card Zurich Card is a great value - usuable for all public transportation including the public boat on Lake Zurich and includes many attractions including audio guide at the museums.

Lots of Shops Bring your cash or credit card. Everything including meals are very expensive here. We had dinner at a couple of restaurants and with one beer a piece, the price of the meals were at least 70 SWF. That's about 42 Euros/60 US dollars and that didn't include a dinner salad or bread with the meals. If you are into fashion, there's plenty of that, but I saw polo shirts for 99 SWF. Shoes for 250 SWF. Way too expensive for our tastes.
