First of all, this hotel is no longer a Best Western, thank goodnes. It is now owned by a Swiss chain and it was absolutely lovely. The location is where you want to be in Lucerne - it was perfect. I booked it thru hotelclub which had the best price, including breakfast. Upon arrival I upgraded to a room with a balcony overlooking the lake as opposed to the "city view". The staff was wonderful. Couldn't have been more helpful. The bath and bedroom was very clean with all the ammenities, but the view spectacular. For the two nights I was there the upgrade cost $75 and was well worth it. I would recommend this hotel highly and would love to go back. There's lot to do in Lucerne and it is a lovely city.

Great location for seeing the sites

I am a travel agent, so I did A LOT of research before our recent trip around Bavaria. We put Lucerne on our agenda because of several recommendations. Unfortunately, the weather chose not to cooperate with us. We drove to Lucerne and found the location of Des Balances to not be very convienient for drivers. It cost us 25 CHF to have them park the car for us due to no parking at the hotel. Since the hotel is in the "old" part, the streets are not very navigatable for cars. I did see the train station and it was only about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. That being said, the hotel was in a great location for seeing all the sites of Lucerne. You can see the old bridge from the restaurant and rooms on that side of the hotel. Our room faced the street, but we didn't have any problem with noise. Although, March is not the busy season. I thought the room was fairly large and clean with a nice seating area. The bathroom was also clean and very roomy. The breakfast was excellent. The hotel offered a computer with internet access in the lobby. The staff was very friendly and the hotel itself is very beautiful.

A little gem that can't be missed if you visit Luzern. If you can afford it, pay a little more to get a room with a view to the lake, it really really is worth it.
The room wasn't very big, but very comfortable and nice.
Nice clean bathroom, not big, but not small either, I would say the correct size.
I went alone on a business trip, perhaps if you share the room it could be a bit small, but this was my room, perhaps if the hotel knows that the room will be for two, they'll give you a larger room.
I'll definitely repeat! :)

We stayed at the Hotel des Balances based on recommendations from this site and could not have been happier. Our room was beautiful and spacious. We had a private balcony overlooking the river and shared many an afternoon snack or glass of wine out there. The staff was helpful and friendly, the location outstanding, and the on-site restaurant delicious! We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Lucerne, I can't imagine a better spot!

Almost Great

There's a reason that the Des Balances doesn't have any photos of their rooms on their web site. Even though the rest of the property is quite nice and the location good, not excellent, the rooms themselves were a disappointment. We had a 4-star hotel with a 2-star room. However, staff was very friendly and helpful. We were even "upgraded" to a river view room upon arrival. Unfortunately, it was on the 5th floor which is surrounded by a stone balustrade. As a result, you couldn't see the water unless you stood on tip-toe or peered through the bannister.

The interesting thing is, when I booked the room, I was told that it was more than $100.00 to upgrade to a water view room. If I'd paid that much more for a so-called view room, I would have been one unhappy customer.

Overall the hotel was nice, the room somewhat shabby, and stay away from the 5th floor.

Wonderful Place to Stay

The Hotel des Balances is in an ideal location and was a warm, welcome spot after driving through the Gottard Pass from Italy. The staff is friendly (they recommended a fabulous seafood restaurant Sebastian's) and the rooms are plush, quiet and large. Our room looked out on the River with a beautiful view. We'd definitely come back.

Great location

This hotel was in a great location for sighseeing in Lucerne. The only fault is the unacceptable noise level coming from the square alt all times of night and early morning. The rooms were very hot so we had to leave the windows open. Apart from that The staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast terrace was stunning. I would recommend this hotel but would get a water viw the next time.

Good location

We stayed here in June 1998 and loved it. It was a charming little Swiss hotel in our memories. We returned in June 2005 and were disappointed. Our room in '98 faced the river (Room 500); it was perfect. Our rooms this year (we stopped here twice, at the beginning of the trip and at the end of the trip) faced the square and were mediocre though very clean. We found the hotel to be full of other Americans this time, probably because of its recent affiliation with Best Western. The noise level in the square prohibited us from opening the windows if we wanted to sleep. It was very warm on the return trip (85F) and although we used the fan, it was uncomfortable. We had tiny room 111, which directly faced the restaurant across the gangway. We could literally speak to the diners if we wanted. Although we had reservations since February, we felt we were plunked in this tiny room in favor of those in tour groups. We asked for another room and were told the hotel was full. Along with the view and the convenient location, the saving grace of this hotel for us this time was its very nice breakfast and good strong coffee, though the very courteous staff can get overwhelmed at times.

FYI, we were able to wheel our suitcases to the hotel from the train station with little problem except for two steps up and down on the pedestrian bridge over the river. Also, we very comfortably took the train from Luzern to the Zurich Airport rather than blowing another day to spend the night before departure in Zurich. On all visits, very clean bathrooms and very firm beds.

Great Hotel in a great city.

The Best Western Hotel des Balances is a very nice hotel. Large, spotless, well furnished rooms, a great bar, helpful staff and perfect location makes this hotel one of the best values in Lucern.

Out the back door is the river and wonderful Lake Lucern, while out the front door is the cobblestone street of the beautiful town. The hotel is literally steps away from the main shopping and tourists areas of town, and walking distance from the train station.

The hotel offers the best breakfast we found in Europe: Breads, rolls, and crusants of all types, fruits, yogurts, nuts, and a fine selection of cereals, meat, cheese, juice and hot drinks.

We had a nice stay and enjoyed everything about the hotel.

Warm Feeling

On our 1st stop of our honeymoon we had the pleasure to stay 3 nights at this very nice hotel.Rooms were beautiful, large ,and overlooked the canel.While on our stay was the grand opening of there beautiful newly remolded bar and restaurant.Breakfast buffet was also included.Lucern is a beautiful little town and we hope to return soon.

Top Local Tips for Lucerne

Swiss Transport Museum Great days entertainment for all ages - especially on a rainy day! Interactive displays for all different modes of transport & communication. Fascinating planetarium as well.

Take a boat to the Transport Museum Get out on the water! We used our Family Boat Pass that we had purchased in Montreux and took a boat to the the Swiss Transport Museum. It was a wonderful afternoon!

Des Balances by car If you arrive to your hotel by car be aware that many of the hotels in the centrum are accessed through pdestrian zones. For most Americans driving in a pedestrian zone is like driving through a shopping mall. If you are not sure how you will be accessing the hotel, call ahead or you could end up driving in circles.
