Historical Traveller Reviews of Des Alpes Hotel
Great Location and Amazing View of Lake Luzern
from Travel_Bug_JOur room was located on one of the upper floors with a balcony. Both the room and the bathroom were spacious. The balcony had an amazing view of the lake, the famous covered bridge, the train station and one of the clocktowers. I highly recommend spending the extra money for this view.
Breakfast was included in the price of the room and the best part was that there were tables outside on the balcony overlooking the lake so you could enjoy the view. The breakfast consisted of meat, cheese, fresh bread, jams and spreads, granola, yogurt and juice.
I would highly recommend staying at the Hotel des Alpes when visiting Luzern.
Great Location; Beautful City
from traveling321Great Location, Great Scenery, Excellent Base
from A TripAdvisor MemberBe warned, dont take a cheaper room without a view over the bridge or lake.
I had been to Lucerne on business previously so knew what to expect from the city but my wife had no prior knowledge and found the location of the hotel to be a superb base for exploring the delights of the city and for access to the impressive rail network to tourist attractions a little further afield.
The staff were courteous and helpful, the room nicely appointed, the bathroom sleek and well lit and the balcony view fantastic.
We arrived later than expected but found the staff and room welcoming.
Although from the exterior you might expect a charming historical hotel on the inside it is modern, in particular the third and fourth floors. The shower room ( no bath ) was clean and brilliant white. The room was booked as a double, the beds were in fact two singles pushed together. One slightly firmer than the other. This wasnt any problem at all for ourselves as the weather was stunning, mid 80's F on the first three days, cooling off, with fantasic thunder storms on the Wednesday evening and a little damp on the Thursday.
We requested a room with balcony overlooking the river and the Chapel Bridge. This gave further views along the river, the promenade alongside, across towards the lake and over towards the mountains, Mount Pilatus in particular.
Our room was on the 3rd floor, room 346, with a small balcony just comfortable for two people to sit and read or admire the special views or the bustle of the train station and city ( just far enough away so as not to cause a noise nuisance ).
Breakfast was good and the waitresses very polite, with the added benefit of breakfasting outdoors on the upper terrace with the lovely views and the swans on the river.
The location of the hotel couldn't be better for those taking the train and for sightseeing in the central part of town. The train station is a 5 - 10 minute stroll from the hotel and gives excellent access to other areas of spectacular beauty.
Mount Pilatus is the nearest mountain visible from the hotel across the river and is accessible either by bus to Krein and then by cable car to the summit at around 7000 feet above sea level, with a variety of walks ( hiking boots needed in certain areas ) at the summit and again halfway down. The tourist trip is a " round robin ", starting at the lake port adjacent to the train station ( tickets available from Tourist Information ). The saloon boat ( choice of 2nd or 1st class - 1st class offers waiter service for refreshments ) takes around 90 minutes from the port to Alpenstad, with a couple of stops ( its a ferry after all ) but worth while.
From Alpenstad its a five minute walk to the cog railway and the views on this are amazing as it slowly snakes its way up the mountain ( try and sit to the right hand side of the cabin going up and sit looking back down to the lake ). The trip takes around 30 minutes but you wont notice that.
At the top, there is a small cafe and also a restaurant that closes by 1400hrs. There is also a hotel here, called Hotel Pilatus. Take a while and walk around the mountain summit, the views are worth the hours walk.
Then the next stage is the downward trip by cable car. You can stop off halfway down and have another walk through the woodland or be daring and try the dry tobogan run ( excellent - but be warned, its fast and slow tobogans are a danger ). Then its the bus from Kriens to Lucerne, takes about 15 minutes. A good day out taking up around 6 hours ( 80 CHF each - excellent ).
Our second trip was self arranged, we took the train from Lucerne to Engleberg ( 175 chf 1st class - you can do this cheaper by going standard - return ). The train journey is around 60 minutes. At Engleberg you can ride the cable car to three locations, the prime location is the summit of Mount Titlus at 10000ft above sea level. At 79chf its a little expensive but well worth it. At the summit you will find a couple of cafe's, restaurant and pizzeria. Have lunch in the pizzeria looking out over the snowcapped mountains, superb - wife's birthday treat. Great day out, 8 hours.
Interlagen is a 5 hour train ride from Lucerne.
Lucerne is a great place to stay if you are flying out of the Zurich airport since it's only a one hour direct train ride away, make sure you sit in the upper level on the train.
We will return to Lucerne and would stay at the Des Alpes again.
The photo's on the review posted by others are a true refelction of the hotel, its location and view.
Pay the extra and have a balcony. Larger balconies are available on the 2nd floor for person of a larger than average build I would recommend these, but the 3rd floor balconies are more than adequate to sit, read, quoff a decent wine and admire the views.
Unhappy at the Hotel des Alpes
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe location and bathroom were great, unfortunately the room itself was shabby and the bed was so uncomfortable I did not sleep well at all which is what is most important to me. I did not feel entirely safe at the hotel with there being no one on duty at night and with the keys being left out unsecured. The service and amenities were not at all what I expected for the price I paid. I was disappointed in the hotel and if I return to Lucerne I will look for another hotel in that area as I loved the location. It was the one of the most expensive hotels I stayed at during my vacation and yet it was the most run down. I think the hotel would be much improved by hiring a few more workers and refurbishing the rooms.
Back for the third time!
from ARGENT126Lived up to its reputation
from Capitol Hillto the Reviews Below! Loved it!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe downside to the location and beautiful view is the noise from the sidewalk cafes below and the people on the Chapel Bridge. As others have noted, I also found that it died down at night, but it started up early in the morning. This could also be a problem in the warmer months if you have the windows open.
Oh what a life!
from ridgehillGreat Situation
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe staff was helpful and patient. Would have prefered the internet to have been free as we had experienced in most of our hotels elsewhere. WiFi was available from an outside supplier, though the hotel expressed no knowledge of it.
Room was comfortable, spacious and the view from the balcony was great, but the shower did leak. The noise complained of by other reviewers quietened about 11:00pm, though we were woken by singing (a parade?) one morning at 4:00am! More amusing than annoying.
Would definitely stay here again as it was good value and in a great location.
Mountain Views from Great Balconies
from kyliecThe room was small, but reasonably comfortable. The balcony, view, and location more than made up for it. The modern bathroom bugged us a little because the lights were on a motion sensor & no way to bypass it.
On our second, and final, night there was construction on the major street that crossed the river and it was incredibly loud. Other than that, we didn't notice any noise.
We found the front desk staff to be very friendly - both women we encountered spoke English very well.
I would stay there again. Completely recommend the river side. I don't know if the rooms would be worth it without the view.
Top Local Tips for Lucerne
Old Swiss House Don't miss a trip to the Old Swiss House - the meal was truly memorable.
For tourist who is staying for a day or two. Day One:I recommend you see Mt.Pilatus.cost 65.20 CHF bought at the tourist Information. This includes all transport up from Lucerne-train-cogtrain-Mt.Pilatus-Cable car-bus-Lucerne. Worth every penny! Day 2: Take the tourist train (tacky I know!) but for only 10CHF and it last for 40mins, it tells the history of Lucerne and all the famous landmarks. This gives you some idea where you would like to visit again by foot which isn't too far rather than looking at Swiss watches all day.
ramp-art the beauty! Walk the ramparts of the old town - you can still see the arrow holes and the workings of the 15th century clock. There is also a beautiful view of the city and it's a bit away from the touristy old town. Walk over the main road that crosses the bridge (staying on the hotel side of the bridge) to a music stage, where we sat at tables, had a beer and listened to the Alpenhorn and accordion.
