Top Local Tips for Lucerne

Trainride Certainly do the trainride from Lucerne to Interlaken, a tourist town to the south! It's quite expensive (public transport is expensive in Switzerland), but it's a wonderful two hour ride to the Alps. Interlaken isn't really interesting, but the views are breathtaking!!

Swiss rail passes great value and include lake steamers Swiss rail passes were the highlight of our trip. An eight day pass cost only GBP168 and included the whole Swiss railway system with the exception of some small mountain railways (and there was a 50 per cent reduction on these). There are small supplements for some special trains like the all-observation car Glacier Express (book in advance for this). You don't need first class everywhere because Swiss trains are legendary for comfort in all classes, as they are for reliability and spectacular views. Upgrades to first for the best observation car stretches are relatively cheap. Best of all, the lake steamers around Lucerne and elsewhere form part of the railway system, and so can be used limitlessly with a pass. First Class is well worth the small supplement on the 3 hour Lucerne - Flüelen William Tell Express when it uses paddle steamers, since First occupies nearly three quarters of the boat! When you go to Switzerland, do yourself a favour and leave the car behind.
