The Stabbach is a very simple hotel. The rooms are small with nice bathrooms. The breakfasts were delicious with unlimited coffee, which is unheard of in Europe. But the shining stars are the staff who are cheerful and very willing to help with everything from hiking trails information to good places for fondue.

NICE PLACE TO STAY AND THE STAFF WAS GREAT

We stayed at Hotel Staubbach for 2 Nights in May and found it very nice. The Hotel itself is a bit dated and needs some updating, but the excellent staff makes up for any shortcomings. Our room had a great view of the valley and waterfalls. The rooom was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good and again the staff was excellent. Would stay there again.

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Staubbach. From the moment I arrived, I felt at home. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and sincerely interested in helping answer your questions or planning an itinerary. The breakfast is simple but filling and very typical of European breakfast's with cold cereal, bread, and yogurt. The rooms that face the Staubbach waterfall and surrounding snow covered Alps have double doors that open to this amazing view with a small balcony. They are little more expensive but well worth it. Pick your room carefully for some of the rooms may be too small or have bunk beds. The walls are a little thin but it was very quiet during my stay. The place is family friendly, well-kept, speak nearly perfect English, clean, and a great value for the money.

Just stayed at the Hotel Staubbach for 4 days and felt at home from check in to check out. Staff is super warm and friendly and informed us of the region as if we were visitng relatives. So nice to be able to converse with people who speak such perfect English. The views are the Best in town, unobstructed views from our room with Balcony directly facing the Waterfalls and the most beautiful valley I have ever seen. Rooms were perfectly clean and neat, well cared for too. Especially enjoyed the crystal chandelier in the reception adding to this landmark Hotel's elegance of 1890 (date built). Breakfast was just perfect. Prices are more than fair for what you get. Cannot say enough.

Lauterbrunnen is a quaint little village, typical of a Swiss mountain farm town. Super centrally located with easy acess to the entire Jungfrau region. Highly recommend the Staubbach for a warm scenic visit to the Alps.

Loved every minute of our stay

This was my first visit to this area. I was not disappointed! The views from this hotel were outstanding! The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere was very welcoming. The traditional no frills food was an absolute delight. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for friendly staff, good food, wonderful scenery. I will most certainly be returning here in the future.

Our Swiss Adventure

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Staubbach during a trip in August, 2005. We arrived late Saturday night the 20th, and had a nice note and our room key waiting for us when we arrived. We began Sunday morning with a great breakfast and an unbelievable view from the room where breakfast is served. We enjoyed our warm, comfortable, and clean room. We had a great view of the hillside out of our window, and had chocolates awaiting us on the pillows. The hotel was so welcoming, including everyone who worked there. They gave us great recommendations for what to do on a rainy day.
While we were there, they received more rain than they had in quite a few years, and we actually ended up getting stranded in Interlaken after taking the train down to shop on a rainy Monday. When we called the Staubbach to tell them the trains were not running and that the roads were also flooded and we had no way to make it back to the hotel that night, they said they would not charge us for the night. That enabled us to have the funds to find a place to stay in Interlaken.
The next morning, Tuesday, was the day we had planned to check out. By helicopter was the only way to make it to Lauterbrunnen that day. My husband had to ride in a helicopter to get to the hotel, pack up our things, and check out. During the night the hotel had lost electricity, but they were more than kind in helping us check out and be able to move to the next leg of our trip.
I cannot say enough about the kindness and generosity of all those we encountered. The Hotel Staubbach was our favorite place we stayed of the four cities we visited in Switzerland and Italy. I do not have a single complaint, and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to this area of Switzerland. Rick Steeves also gave us excellent information on this hotel and area. We would love to visit the Staubbach again in the future!

Simple, but comfortable

Our 4-night stay here was perfectly charming. We had a double room with a balcony and en suite bathroom. Great breakfast with stunning views, very friendly and helpful staff, play area with toys for children (we were traveling with our 11-month-old son), nice old-style ambiance. Our room could have used a few upgrades, however -- new carpet (it was worn through in areas) and chair coverings (ditto), as well as new mattresses (they were very soft). Light sleepers might have a problem with hallway noises, the walls are a bit thin. Otherwise, it was a great place to stay for an affordable, relaxing family vacation.

Stayed here for 4 nights in a 4 bedded room (1 double bed plus a double bunk) with en suite for CHF170/night. The hotel is traditional in style - wood panelling etc. It really needs a facelift actually to bring it somewhere approaching the 21st century. The room was clean although sparsely furnished. For light sleepers: the bunkbed in our room was very creaky. There is no exhaust fan in the bathroom (all too common in Europe!). No TV/radio in the room! There is a communal area downstairs with a TV and coin-operated internet access. The staff are very friendly, helpful and speak excellent English. Breakfast was simple but of good quality (cereal, breads, jams, ham, cheese, no eggs). The location is great - being towards the southern end of the town looking out onto the Staubbach falls and the beautiful Lauterbrunnen valley. About 8 mins walk from the train station. Excellent access to other towns/hiking trails etc in the Jungfrau area. Get the Jungfraubahnen pass - well worth it! Also, don't miss the amazing Trammelbach falls just 30 mins walk from the hotel.

We just had the pleasure of taking a trip to the Lauterbrunnen area and stayed 3 nights at the Staubbach. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and the hotel itself has a very cute charm to it. We had two rooms that were connected by a private bathroom which was nice. My only issues, if you want to call them issues...was the carpets in both rooms were worn completely through; the bathroom paint had peeled off inside the shower and a small annoyance was no electrical outlet near the mirror which created an interesting experience while trying to do my hair! The breakfast was delicious with fresh breads and jam each morning. We would definitely stay again and I do reccomend it...it's just probably not geared towards those used to staying in a 4 or 5 star hotel.

Top Local Tips for Lauterbrunnen

Incredible hikes If you stay in Lauterbrunnen, it's a quick walk to trails and gondola access, avid hikers could spend several days here without getting bored. Trummelbach Falls (the touristy destination) seemed a little too commercialized. We approached the ticket booth, but turned around as we watched hordes of tourists exit and return to their tour buses. Good for families but may not appeal to all.

Hike Walk to the gondola at the end of the valley and thke it up to the first stop and then walk to the funicular in Murren then hike along the ridge and alpen valley back towards Lauterbrunnen and down the trail next to the old funicular tracks (they removed the funicular in 2005-2006). Obviously there are 100's of miles of hiking in the valley. This is just a hike that many have not done.

Avoid the area in late October until December We were in Lauterbrunnen in mid to late October and found many restaurants to be closed. Its a small town so you don't have much to choose from to begin with, but your options diminish as you get closer to late October. It looks like the town comes back to life in December. Plan ahead and bring your own food, or take the train to Wegen or Interlaken to increase your choices.
