Top Local Tips for Gstaad
Ski ing in Gstaad region The area consists out of 3 different ski regions. Those 3 are not connected. You will have to inter-travel by either: (free) train or bus or hire a taxi. Gstaad is a mondain, traditional resort. Do not expect "hard core" apres ski!!! Do not expect heavy slopes going down (but good for youngsters and those with lesser experience). If you expect to see how it all began when skiing was for the "rich and famous" than go and live with it for a few days.
What types of food do you want? The restaurants in Gstaad are in hotels, and vary by price and types of food. If you want pizza you can go to the Sporthotel Victoria which is close to the train station. The prices are reasonable, and they offer pizza mostly as well as some local dishes. The Hotel Bernerhof is the clsoest to the train station,and more expensive. They offer a wide range of food such as soups/salads, pastas, meat dishes, vegeatrian dishes, and local cuisine. For absolutely local cusine and dishes for meat lovers go to the Hotel Rostli. The food is solely Swiss and I'm not sure on the prices because I don't dine there, I am a vegetarian, but be sure to go if meat is your speciality.
Regional Pass Consider buying a Regional Pass on arrival at the airport. It gives you two free days travel (from 5) and half price for the remaining three days. If you are only there for a few days, its cheaper than buying a return from the airport and you get half price travel while you are there. For a little extra, you can upgrade to 1st Class, which if you time your journey properly, gets you an amazing panorama seat on the Montreaux - Gstaad part of the journey, normally in a comparatively quiet carriage. There is an option for a 7 day pass which gives 3 days of free travel with the remainder at half price. Details are on the website for the Golden Pass Line.
