Top Local Tips for Grindelwald

Pizza anyone? Go to Uncle Tom's Cabin early to get a table as it's very popular. Staff are lovely and they do a great pizza - one of the cheapest places to eat in Grindlewald.

Bring good walking shoes! Very steep hills all around, be in shape and bring good shoes!

mountain rail access we bought tickets from the hotel - seemed easiest option; we drove to the station and there are meters in what looks like the car-park of the large hotel next to the station. Although we got good seats for the first train up from Grindelwald to the change station, the second one (into the mountain itself) was a lot more busy - we had to stand all the way to the top (+ watch for a mass exodus and then return of tourists to take glacier photos at the halts on the way up). That said, views from the top were amazing (we had a clear day in August) + children had fun skiing (on a small slope) in mid-August - but remember the sun screen, even for a short while outside. Train down ok from the top but then there were problems at the intermediate station and was totally crowded down to Grindelwald - not nice at all and somewhat undid the Swiss reputation for efficient transport; don't know if there are often rail problems here, or whether we were just unlucky on the day.
