Historical Traveller Reviews of Belvedere Hotel
Excellent. Totally relaxing.
from ionsideNeville and Freda davison
Beautiful Setting but could be better hotel.
from gfarmer668The views of the Alps were magnificent. Champagne reception was most appreciated.
It was a very short walk to the downtown and train station. The indoor pool and spa were wonderful although the hours open were too short.
The breakfast was great and lovely view.
Switzerland is expensive but this hotel was way over priced. Our luggage had been lost temporarily by the airline and we needed shampoo and toothbrushes. This hotel did not provide any toiletries at all.
Most of the other guests were older and all dressed up for dinner. Our college age girls did not fit in.
first of all thank you very much for having chosen the Belvedere for your stay in Grindelwald.
We are very sorry, that you could not fully enjoy your stay with us, that we could not fullfill your expectations.
We have many family suites, sometimes, like Christmas and New Year or Half Term week up to 40 children are staying in our hotel. There is also a Games room for children.
You must have been with us in a period, outside of school vacations and that's why your teenage girl did not feel that comfortable.
For dinner, not many guests dress up. Some English guests however still love to dress up for dinner and you where with us during a week, where lots of regular English guests have been staying with us. Even if we do not ask for jacket and tie, we still think that casual elegant is appropriate.
We however also have a lot of reqular guests from other countries, USA including.
Our hotel has the same or even a higher occupency that the competion. Would our rates not be correct, our occupency would be lower and we would never have such a big regular clientele. You probably booked a tarif including dinner. Our 6 course gourmet dinners are charged to guests from outside CHF 85.-, in the US you would pay over $ 100.-
Take from the total package rate you payed the value from the dinner off and the 15% tipp which you did not need to pay, as included, take the room tax off, which you would have had to pay extra in the USA, take the breakfast off, which in the USA would have cost you about $ 30.- plus tip and tax and once all that taken off, the amount left for the room only is ridiculously tiny.
Unfortunately, as in Switzerland everything has to be included (law), there is a great risk
that our all inclusive rates are compared with pure room rates from elsewhere.
with best regards

Terrific spot - amazing views
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe room had everything you could want and as you would expect in Switzerland was very clean and functional. It did lack a bit of character that you would perhaps get in a Swiss Chalet styled building.
All of the staff spoke at least 3 languages and were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was divine & the service from Elizabeth very homely. It's a bit like stepping back in time - back to the 70's when you stay at this hotel - but that becomes part of the appeal. In fact it's actually what makes this region still as beautiful today, they have held on to their chalets and old fashioned methods and it is charming. Thank god someone has seen sense - progress isn't always progress.
Our one complaint would be the bar - on three occasions we tried to get a pre dinner drink - unsuccessfully, there was no-one serving there that we ever saw.
The location is terrific, so much to see and do. We really needed more time here and we would probably come back in June next time when everything is open again for the summer season.
thank you so much for your wonderful review and very many thanks for having chosen the Belvedere for your stay in Grindelwald. We highly appreciate.
The Belvedere was built by grandfather Hauser between 1904 and 1907 and then doubled in size (to actual size) in 1910. Due to the first world war he had to give up his plans to double again. The location of the hotel with the panoramic view to the famous Eiger and other mountains is unique.
We are proud to have so many guests coming from Australia to our hotel, some of them already for many years.
We of course hope, to have the great pleasure and honor of welcoming you back soon also.
All the best and thank you so much again

Postcard Views everywhere you look!
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt is simple luxury with breath-taking views everywhere you look. The food is amazing, including the depth, variety, courses and service. The staff makes this hotel for me. Whatever I want to do - hiking, biking, bungee jumping, skiing, sight-seeing, etc - they provide me with options and recommendations. Can you tell I love this place? If I lived on the same continent, I would travel here several times a year. On my second trip, I felt like part of the Belvedere family - the staff always remembers me and my likes/dislikes when I return. Check out my pictures....
thank you so much for your great review. Americans have been for years among the our most important clients, means they visited us in very high numbers.
Unfortunately the dollar got weaker and weaker and the number of visitors from the US got smaller and smaller.
We really hope that the dollar will gain strenght soon again, because we miss our regular US clientele a lot.
A US family, however, told me just last month, that despite the very low dollar, a ski vacation in Switzerland is still cheaper than one in Colorado.
Thanks again for your great review and hopefully see you soon.

Belvedere deserves 5 stars!
from PerryShreveport7thank you so much for your wonderful review and thank you for having chosen the Belvedere for your stay in Grindelwald.
Belvedere deserves 5 stars, you wrote, thank you so much for that. To be a 5 star, we would need additional service, for example room service during the night and most of our rooms would need a little more size and more luxury.
We prefer to be a good 4 star hotel, than just an average 5 star and of course hope, that you will return very soon.
All the best

Across from the North Face of the Eiger...
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel is friendly and Swiss-ly efficient, imaginative food & good service, guests from everywhere, and since the Hauser family was among the first to get into the business a century ago, they've got one of the best locations: the view of the famous Eiger North Face is unbeatable.
Highly recommended if you're in the Bernese Oberland.
"
from AVIDEATERThe Bernese Oberland has to be the most beautiful place on earth and the Hotel Belvedere is simply outstanding.
The level of friendliness and attention displayed by all employees of the hotel and the restaurant are unparalleled in all of Europe. All spoke (in the least) English, German and French.
I can still picture the view from my balcony and still recall the feeling it gave me to wake up and walk out onto that balcony. (I'm smiling right now).
The restaurant is outstanding. Thank God we changed our minds and decided to pay the 30euros per person extra (per night) to have dinner at Restaurant Francais. Every meal was outstanding! Tuesday night is buffet night. The menu at first looked unappealing (Oxtail, pork neck, etc.). I had a sample of each food item and went back for seconds (and some thirds). The cheese selection after dinner is worth the 60euros all by itself!!
We were even introduced to the game of Sjoelbak (Dutch shuffleboard).
Enjoy!
Perfect Honeymoon
from IvanExcellent
from JIMCHIThe rate included a delicious hot buffet breakfast as well as a complete dinner each night. The dinners were excellent and offered a choice of 3 entrees, plus appetizer and dessert. If one of the three entrees was not to your liking, they offered 3 additional options that did not change nightly and that would appeal to most tastes.
The hotel is about a 10 minute easy walk into town and about 5 minutes from the train station.
What a view, what a crew
from MyHouseTop Local Tips for Grindelwald
trains take the train! what amazing train system...took the trains up to the top of the ski mountain each day and took the train everywhere we went. clean, safe, beautiful trains!
Things to do no matter what! Because Grindelwald is both centrally located in Switzerland, and yet set deep in a valley surrounded by fantastic Alp mountains, one can find exciting things to do no matter what time of year or weather. E.g., although it rained a few days so that we could not hike the mountains, we just had a ball taking the trains (next to the hotel!) to Bern one day and to Neuchatel another, visiting beautiful castles and fascinating/informative museums, etc.! Very family oriented and tourist friendly throughout. Ski and lots of other sports in winter, hike or boat/swim (maybe paraglide??!) the rest of the year! Great location for both lake and alpine activities!
Good restaurant We had two excellent dinners at the Hotel Schweizerhof. It is a beautiful dining room and the price for the dinners was remarkably moderate.
