Top Local Tips for Bern
Public transport is very convenient You really don't need a car inside the city. No tickets are sold on the trams and buses - you need to buy in advance using automatic machines they have on every stop. Tthese machines have instructions in English.
Side Trip to Murten I followed a Rick Steves recommendation and made a side trip to Murten. About 35 minutes from Bern by train if you transfer correctly at an intermediate station. Murten is a pleasant medieval town that can be toured in an hour or two. I had a pleasant dinner in an Italian restaurant. I found Bern dull and Murten provided a nice contrast.
Taxis from the station Don't count on picking up a cab from Bern station on a Saturday night - we waited a long time for one. Prob best to call one earlier or take the tram from outside the front of the station.
