Enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Rooms are a reasonable size, nicely done with decent bathrooms. You get a write up about the designer of your room which does make it more interesting then a normal hotel but don't get too sold on the hype about the design as after all you do just stay in the one room!

Breakfast had loads to chose from and we never had trouble finding a seat. The restaurant was also really good. Not cheap and the one night we ate there we felt like we were being a bit boring staying in the hotel but it was the best meal we had. Traditional swedish food really well prepared. The staff were friendly and helpful. Make sure you get a good deal - give Cresta a go - but nothing to complain about here.

We spent a week here and found this hotel to be of excellent value. The breakfasts were very good. The staff were very helpful. The beds were so comfortable we would certainly visit here again

Cleverly designed

Spent 3 nights in the Birger Jarl in June and found it a comfortable, friendly base to explore Stockholm from. The room was cleverly designed with the very comfy bed at an angle allowing space for a litte sofa and desk/dressing table area. There was good storage space for clothes and a clean, bright bathroom with a good shower. Breakfast buffet was fantastic and my work addicted partner was delighted to have free internet access in the snazzy basement TV lounge. Bar prices we found same as outside places.
The town centre and Old town were around 20 min to half an hours walk away nice chance to explore the indoor and outdoor foodmarkets near the Opera. The bus stop was practically next door so it was easy to hop on a No 2 bus down to waterfront, Old town and beyond. Reccomend venturing over to Sodermalm to eat in the PELIKAN Blekingegatan 40 a tradional beerhouse restaurant very reasonably priced. Don't miss the Vasa museum and Skansen open air museums.

Good 3-Star in Quiet location

Stayed 4 nights in May. The room was smallish and designer-furnished. Bed very comfortable; bathroom (shower only) small. Being of minimalist style, there was no door to the shower cubicle, but just a glass partition that only went half-way - a bit odd I thought and difficult to keep the shower water inside!

I did however find the breakfast restaurant over-crowded with diners acting like vultures over a carcass. On the first morning I couldn't find anywhere to sit, so after that, I ventured to get to breakfast early by 7:15 in order to find a table and eat in some civlised style. I may have just been unlucky with bus parties. But apart from the restaurant being too small for the number of rooms, the choice of foods was excellent - even providing their version of cooked fare.

The location is quiet with not much happening but it is only a few metres from the No 2 bus stop that takes one to Gamla Stan and beyond. Also two metro stops are close by and Odenplan up the street is full of activity.

not a 4 star hotel

Stayed at the Birger Jarl last week, and the most obvious issue is that this hotel is certainly not 4 star!....i would put it down as an average 3 star at best.

Good points - tasty breakfast, good quiet location, amazingly comfy bed, funky decor.

Bad points - the rooms are TINY!....couldn't swing a mouse, let alone a cat. The soundproofing isn't great, so you can hear a lot of noise from other rooms. Bathrooms and in-room facilities are very basic. Don't expect things like robe and slippers like you'd normally get in a 4 star hotel. Hotel bar is expensive, but drinks aren't cheap anywhere in Stockholm.

If you stay at this hotel, make sure you've got a very good price, no ways is it worth the standard pricing. Also don't expect 4 star-type service, or you'll be dissapointed.

On positive - can recomend 2 great very local restuarants - Haket (very local and value for money), and Hoffmans (bit more expensive but also just 2 min up the road). Ask the hotel for directions.

Stayed here for a couple of nights whilst at a business meeting in Stockholm. The reviews on Tripadvisor.com were very accurate and fair.
As is often the case, the publicity photos portray a hotel and a bedroom that is much bigger than the real thing. This is a clean, pleasant, modest, 3 star hotel, not 4 star. Friendly and comfortable but nothing special.
I had a standard double room which was small by international standards. The double bed was very comfortable but too big for the room so it had to be placed obliquely across the floor space to fit in. I would certainly ask for an upgraded room unless you're the size of an Irish leprachaun!

Just got back from a quick trip to scandinavia and while in Stockholm we stayed at the Birger Jarl - great location, quiet neighborhood, just a quick walk to the main district for shopping, etc. The room was small, but immaculate. However, THE BED, was the softest, most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. They use a foam mattress topper, down pillows and a down comforter/duvet - plush! The breakfast was amazing! They had everything. Ate dinner at the cozy little restaurant nextdoor called Tulehof owned by Santina Elmahy and her brother who is chef - wonderful food and friendly service!!

I've stayed at Hotel Birger Jarl in Stockholm twice and recommend it. Not only is it quiet and within walking distance of an easy bus line that goes directly downtown to the shopping district and waterfront, but staff are friendly and the included breakfast is amazing. While most Swedish hotel breakfast buffets are unparalleled, the one at Hotel Birger Jarl ranges from make-your-own waffles to rich coffee to herring (if you're into that at the breakfast hour!) to fresh fruits, pastries, cheeses, vegetables, meats and, that concession to Americans and Brits, scrambled eggs. The hotel's located in a nice residential area not far from many reasonable restaurants and shops. Some of the rooms are decorated by Swedish designers, and you pay a premium for those. Otherwise, the non-designer rooms, while cozy, are clean, with efficiently laid out baths, large windows and firm beds. It's a real find!

Great hospitality

Just got back from my hen weekend. 8 of us girls in total, have no complaints at all and I am very fussy!

Rooms were small, but extremely clean, quiet and comfortable and great value (working out at £75 pp for 2 nights in total). The breakfast was great and the staff very friendly, they even waived the 1 night cancellation fee for one member of my party who could not come away.

It was the 1st European hotel I have stayed at in a long while that was not a rip off.

Top Local Tips for Stockholm

Visit Stockholm Visitez Stockholm quelques jours, c'est une superbe ville pour les promenades, musées, shopping,resto. Tout me semble fait pour faciliter la vie, je ne parle pas suédois, seulement un peu l'anglais, et je me débrouille bien dans le métro ou le train. Les gens sont sympa, cool, calmes.

Gondolen Lfit & Restaurant Take the trip up on the lift to experience the magnificent views over Stockholm, and then treat yourself to a meal at the restaurant that feels like you are suspended over the water. The food is wonderful, the wine sublime, and the service second to none. Not a cheap night out but worth the treat.

stockholm card get one of these before you go. means that you get transport and entrance to museums/palaces for free.
