Top Local Tips for Stockholm

Rent a bike (if the weather is good) Unless it's raining (which happens frequently), you should rent a bike and use it to visit Stockholm, especially the island of Djurgarden. You can get bikes for 30$/day from the area where you board the ferry. You can always find a place to park your bike and distances are close enough to enjoy it even if not in the best of shape.

Stockholm card Buy a Stockholm card for 1,2 or 3 days. You can get it from the Tourist Centre. It gives you free travel on the metro, city buses and some boat trips. Also free entry to most of the museums. palaces and churches. We saved about £40 each with a 72 hour card.

You have got to visit... The Vasa museum - 16th Century wreck of the flagship of the Swedish navy, brought up from Lake Malaren in the 1960s. No amount of description can prepare you for the scale of it and the magnificence of the carvings. Allow at least 2 hours to get the best of it, more if you really want to see everything. And - Skansen, the open-air museum. Houses and shops brought from all over Sweden - a great place for families to visit and the 'Theme-park' atmosphere is almost completely lacking.
