Dona Maria is wonderful

Hotel Dona Maria had been recommended to us by friends and I am very grateful. My partner booked this as a treat, despite it being more expensive than our other accommodation throughout Andalucia.
It made the beginning of our holiday and set a tough standard for the rest of it! Having an outdoor pool, even a small one in a hot city is a great bonus, and the view and location are spectacular.
our breakfast was not included in our deal but the local cafes outside of the tourist zone sufficed greatly.

Not worth the money!

I was very disappointed in this hotel. The staff were not overly friendly or helpful. They charge way too much for breakfast, our rooms were dark and we felt like we were in a cramped box. I would not recommend this hotel. The only GREAT thing is the location! It is right next to the cathedral and a main street. I was hoping for much more.
Reassuringly dissapointing

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights (long enough) in April 05.
As we entered the hotel, we thought it was very pretty, until they showed us our room. Beware, most rooms (unless you're willing to pay €185/night) overlook a dark tall courtyard, so hardly any light gets to these old/depressing rooms.
As this hotel is an old building, you can hear the lift going up & down, showers going, and even the squicky mattres above our room!! The second night, some drunken people decided to carry on partying in their hotel room, we complaint but the staff didn't seem too bothered about this.
We hardly got any sleep, but thankfully we did not spend too much time in the room. Have to say, you cant beat the location. It's handy to have a (small) pool on the roof but get there early (8.00am) if you want to lay on one of the (only) 4 sun beds on the terrace!!
We decided that after paying (€135/night, very overated for the kind of service you get here) we'd have breakfast in the (cheaper) nearby bars as the hotel charges you €15 for it. Definitely would not recommend it to my friends. As we intend to go back, we'd rather stay in a pension than here!

The worse money can buy!

We stayed at this hotel in July 2004 and as soon as we arrived, we thought that this hotel is over-prized. I found this hotel to be very tiny and very old and ugly-looking. I also did not like the smell at the lobby, I am not sure if it was some cheap incense or what. The hotel staff was not that great, as far as service. They were just the typical personnel you would find at a three-star hotel. I also found the elevator to be very small and very slow. I don't want to waste more time talking about this hotel. All in all, I would not return here.
A bad experience in Seville

This hotel merits perhaps 2 stars at best. The attitute of the personnel made feel that I was at a bad hotel in New York. The service at the "so called restaurant" is rude and of course the breakfast is bad. The hotel announced internet connections, but when inquired about it, they shrugged their shoulders with either "I do not know" or "Go to an Internet cafe in the city" When inquiring for help about local shows, the response was "Here is a brochure, you make the telephone call" When asked for ice in my room: "we do not give ice, because it promotes drinking in the rooms" "You can come down to the bar and get one small glass with ice"! The overall experience was so bad that we departed one day ahead of schedule.

The Ultimate Sevilla Experience

Before I decided to book the Dona Maria I read some recent reviews which caused me some concern, but I just had a feeling that these few disgruntled people had to be wrong. How happy I was that my hunch was correct. The Dona Maria was a splendid place to stay. My wife and I loved everything about it. It was recommended to us by our daughter who is attending the university. We walked everywhere and thoroughly enjoyed the sights , the tapas, the wine and the Flamenco. The hotel staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The room was excellent. I would definitely stay there again.
The four stars are actually just part of the hotel logo!

We stayed here for one night in the summer of 2003, mainly because of the location. In terms of location, it's hard to beat. The property is literally just across the plaza from La Giralda. There are several good places for tapas close by.
I believe the four stars often attributed to the Hotel Dona Maria in guide books are actually just part of the hotel logo. We found the rooms to be old and musky, but clean - more worthy of a "two-and-a-half star" hotel. Perhaps the amenities (rooftop pool, garage) may pull the rating up to three stars, but no more.
We didn't mind waiting a bit for our rooms to be ready (because we did arrive for check-in a bit early). We didn't mind the noise of the bells (it WAS right next to La Giralda, after all), nor did we mind the heat (it IS Andalucia in summer, after all!).

Value for money, great location

I stayed at the Dona Maria 15th Oct to 19th Oct 2004. How glad I am that I did not log onto Trip Advisor and read some of the reviews until after I returned, or I would have been in fear and trepidation of what I had booked for my fellow traveller and myself! We found our room to be clean, comfortable and well appointed -especially after we found the switch for the air conditioning. The public rooms were equally comfortable and facilities and information supplied for visitors to the city were excellent We found all the hotel staff, from managers and reception staff to domestic staff to be pleasant, friendly and helpful. We could not have asked for a better location - right in the centre of the historic quarter. Regardless of the central location we experienced no problems with city noise but I must agree with one reviewer that the hotel could benefit from better sound insulation surrounding the interconnecting bedroom doors.
The Best Treat in Seville

I have to say that I just love Seville and is without doubt one of my favourite cities. Part of the Seville experience is a MUST stay at the Dona Maria. Seville would not be the same to us otherwise. The Dona Maria is centrally located right next to the Giralda whose view from the pool terrace has to be the best aspect about this hotel. You can't help but lie on the pool loungers on a hot summer's day or enjoy cocktails on warm evenings and say "WOW, this is fantastic - I can't believe I'm in Spain enjoying such an amazing sight". We have had the pleasure of staying twice, each time in September. The staff are always pleasant and very polite and they speak English too! The rooms are clean and nicely decorated too. You can park your car in the garage but then there's a car park not far away anyway if it's full. A hearty breakfast is also available but just going outside to different tapas restaurants does it for me. We will always stay at the Dona Maria when we go to Seville - it's always a special treat!
Location, location, location

We stayed here for 4 nights in Sept 04. The best things about the Dona Maria are the location, right in the centre of Seville, the garage (even at an extra 12 euros a night) and the rooftop terrace and pool. Our room was small, right over the front door, and not as grand as some of the others, but you don't spend a lot of time in it. The AC worked, the staff were helpful but there was a bit of noise from renovation work that is ongoing & the sound proofing between rooms is not great. Being right in the centre access is a bit difficult by car esp with the metro work going on - don't be fooled by the no entry sign at the hotel, the no entry is immediately after the hotel entrance. However, once the car is garaged you can walk everywhere. The Giralda is across the square and the Alcazar is 2 mins. Breakfast is a buffet, everything from orange juice and tortilla to chocolate buns and wonderful yema with pine nuts. The best thing is sitting on the terrace, having cooled off in the (small) rooftop pool, listening to and watching all the Giralda bells going at full peal - an amazing sight.
Top Local Tips for Sevilla
Spend a little time brusing up on Spanish I agree with another posted comment - language barrier seemed a little more of a problem in Spain than in any other country we have traveled through in Euorpe - we have traveled through most. This problem existed at this hotel and at many locations in central to Southern Spain - seemed to not be a proplem in Barcelona. Study you Spanish phrase dictionary.
La Estrella Restaurant Try the La Estrella bar and restaurant on the Calle Estrella, just a five minute walk from the Dona Maria hotel. Great food, terrific atmosphere, great service.
Bring your Spanish dictionary Unlike other cities in Spain, in Seville, very few people speak a language other than Spanish. Bring your dictionary and be patient with the locals, they will be patient with you and try their best to bridge any language barrier.
