Loved the Hotel Alcantara!

I very happily stayed at the Hotel Alcantara for 8 nights in May, 2005. The location is superb, right in the heart of the Barrio de Santa Cruz and just a 5 minute walk to the Cathedral and Alcazar. I found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. Our room was bigger than expected and the bathroom was quite large with a full-sized shower. Our room was tidied, beds made up and fresh towels given every day. The climate controlled air-conditioning was perfect and a blessing in such hot weather. Breakfast was adequate and fresh. I would definitely stay there again and highly recommend this hotel.

Ideal for a stopover

Having read all the reviews we decided to try all the other hotels but they were fully booked in May! So we went to the Alcantara. We booked a double and ended up with a twin.... when we spoke to reception they told us in Spain a double is not a doubel - it is a twin! We did not work out what they call a double then. The hotel joined the beds together and we spent the vacation falling through the cracks!

Depsite this hiccup the hotel was clean, cheap and very very central - for sightseeing, for eating, for going shopping and for the gardens. We needed a place to rest our heads when we were out and about and that is what we got. Staff were ok and if you are with friends or a couple this is ideal.

And the flamenco show underneath is fantastic!

Fabulous location, friendly staff

Stayed here with five other ladies in April during the Feria - and the hotel was fabulous value compared to others elsewhere in Seville - even those which didn't have such a central location. Staff were great, very helpful and though rooms were small, let's face it you don't go to Seville to stay in your room - and they were clean and had lovely bathrooms - with baths, rather than just showers, which were great with the local soft water - bubbles aplenty! We didn't bother with breakfast at the hotel, as there were several al fresco places locally to sit in the sun with your fresh orange juice and coffee etc. But the flamenco show next door was brilliant - and if I went to Seville again, this is definitely where I'd stay.

Just returned from the Hotel Alcantara. Found the hotel to be nice and clean and in a great location. Unfortunately, the hotel was very, very noisy. If you are going to stay there get the top floor or take ear plugs as the floors/walls are made of paper.

This hotel is clean and well-located if you want to be right in the Barrio Santa Cruz, but the room we got was tiny, hot and uncomfortable and I am absolutely positive you can find something as comfortable or more for a lower price at other places in the immediate vicinity. The staff was not especially friendly and there was really nothing memorable about this place except the bad value.

Clean, good location, but...

Stayed at the Alcantara a couple of weeks ago and there are things in the reviews that I agree with - and things I disagree with. Yes, the hotel is nicely located - once you find it! I'm not sure it's true that, as another reviewer said, "getting lost is half the fun" - not if you come into the city at night and you're dead tired from dragging suitcases around the barrio. We finally asked an American who lived in Seville. She looked at the address and said, "Oh, that's the street I live on - but I don't know of any hotel there". That's how tucked away it is! Don't get me wrong: that's not a reason for avoiding the hotel. The location is quite nice - just about a quarter of a mile from the cathedral, and tucked away in one of those wonderful narrow alleys. And the Flemenco club/museum next door is a must-see.

No, my problem is that the rooms, while very clean, are like prison cells: bare walls, small, no seating other than the beds. If you're really active and spend very little time in the room, this isn't a problem. But if, like me, you have youngsters/teens, then make sure that your room is laid out with your needs in mind!

Wonderful Hotel!

We stayed two nights in March 05 and paid E75. The hotel seemed new and the room was nicely furnished though on the small size. We had a bit of difficulty finding it at first, but everyone gets lost in Sevilla. It's part of the fun!

This was a very nice hotle and a good value. The hotel was nicley remodeled lately and it was very comfortable and clean. the local is great and the breakfast was a good deal. the staff were very helpful and friendly and spoke good english. I will gladly stay here again. Would recommend you take in the flamenco show next to the hotle during your stay. get tickets in advance.

Feb 2005, from a New York City Suburb: I stayed there with my two teenage kids. It was a great place. The room was an adequate size, very clean and it was in a great location. The people who worked there were extremely nice and helpful!!!! I will stay there again when I return to Seville.

Great location, clean, good price

We just returned from a trip to Spain and Portugal in Feb./March and this was one of our favorites. The rooms are very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The bathroom was also a plus -- large enough, stand-up shower, modern. The location is great and so charming. We drove and had to partk in the structure, but that is only a few minutes walk. Worth it for the narrown winding street location. We did not take part in the optional breakfast, but it looked just as good as what we got in a cafe nearby.

Top Local Tips for Sevilla

Smoking ban in Spain Don't be fooled by Spain's half-hearted attempts to implement a limited "ban" on smoking. The law is that all restaurants about 1000 sq ft need to have a non-smoking section, and that those below that size get to choose whether they are completely smoke free of completely smoking. No one except for the ice cream and pastry shops have chosen to be smoke free (and I mean pastry shops, not cafes), and there are virtually no restaurants in Seville, or much of Spain for that matter, that are over that size stipulation. As a result, perhaps 1 out of every 20 cafes is non-smoking, and we couldn't find a single restaurant or tapas bar in town that was recommended and non-smoking.

Take a Taxi! There is no metro in Seville, and the bus is an option. However, the cabs are only about 5 Euro to absolutely anywhere! So, if you are lugging bags to check in or out, I would definitely recommend just grabbing a taxi. The taxis are clean, the drivers are friendly (even to non-Spanish speakers). Wel! worth it!

Casa de la Memoria A great place to see authentic artistic flamenco is at the Casa de la memoria next to Al cantara hotel in the center of Seville.
