Top Local Tips for Salamanca

a different timetable for eating In Spain, people eat very late compared with many other countries. Lunch seems to be eaten at 2.30 or 3pm, dinner at 10pm or later. If you go to a restaurant before these times, you'll be on your own. If you can adjust to the late hours, it's more fun to go when the cafes and bars are full. Student social life is highly developed in Salamanca, and the clubs and bars seem to be open all night.

Language & Transport I have found people in Salamanca are very willing to help, but not a lot of them speak English. Therefore, if you do not speak Spanish yourself, bring a good dictionary with you. Menus will often be available in English, but translations do not always make sense which makes you end up eating a surprise meal sometimes! Not a problem for the adventurous traveller, but unpleasant if you have allergies or strong dislikes for certain foods. Salamanca is beautiful, best to explore it on foot. If you are travelling to Salamanca from Madrid by train, make sure you make reservations a.s.a.p. upon your arrival in Madrid and for the return trip. There's only a very short train travelling up and down and it's a 2.5 hour trip so you do not want to stand all the way. On board there are no food/water/beverages services and in summer it can get quite warm (in the older trains the air conditioning is sub optimal)! Breathtaking views!
