Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Lopesan Catarina Playa del Ingles

Lovely Hotel but Poole cleanliness could have been better.

from KarenScotland
Chose this hotel due to the quiet location. Travelled as a single parent with my two boys aged 13 and 9 years on a 7 day break. Hotel was spotlessly clean, rooms were large and air con was really good, despite reading that the air con only worked between the hours off 11am to 11pm, ours was on 24/7, we also had a fridge in our room. My kids enjoyed playing the "free" table tennis. There was also a pool table but the 1 euro coins often got stuck, but a good hit released the balls. The food was good, providing chips at the evening meals, which my two boys lived off for the duration, all the staff from the receptionists to the room maids were all very friendly. My only disappointment was that my 9 year old son cut his foot "quiet badly" on a broken wine glass found in the poole. Despite the poole supposingly have been cleaned!!!! It was a little girl who was using her snorking gear that found the broken glass, the lifeguard then used a net to pick up any other pieces that were left. There was also many dead flies in the poole, again supposingly have been cleaned !!!

ok for a quiet holiday

from joejan
a great hotel if you like it quiet, majority of guests were german and other nationalities and only few english.
very close to the beach and the amazing sand-dunes.
the nearest centre for bars was the cita centre, which was mainly for german entertainment.
we did however find a centre with english bars, which was on the edge of town called the chaperral centre and only cost 3 euros to get back to the hotel after a night out.
the so called irish bars were in the aguilla roca centre, but we found it to be poor, as they tried to coax you in for 2 for 1 drinks, but you still end up paying for 2!
the main centre of the resort is the yumbo centre, and this caters for mainly the gay community, however if you keep an open mind you will see a lot of entertainment there.
all in all i dont think we will return to gran canaria, as we prefer lanzarote.

Family Friendly Catarina

from thevillan
We have recently returned from a fantastic family holiday at the catalina, all the staff were fantastic and our two children aged 8 and 3 1/2 were made to feel extremely wellcome by everyone from the cleaners to the management.
Our only complaint would be the lack of childrens food available and the majority of children of all nationaliies lived on a diet of chips and ketchup all week !
The salad bar which is available every night provided a great alternative to the selection of main meals which seemed to cater for the Germans tastes, the breakfasts however were great. Two tips would be to eat outside in the garden area and to pay for the option to have as much drink as you like during the meal.
The hotel runs free coaches to the beach and the taxis were very cheap for getting out and about, the hotel is a stones throw from the famous sand dunes which are well worth a visit.
We loved the resort, beaches, hotel and weather and are looking into a November return.
Despite being in the minority nationality wise this was more than compensated for by having well behaved European children in the hotel and all the nationalities were friendly.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.

Well Impressed

from scotsbettyboop1969
I returned from holiday today 12-5-07 after staying for 1 week at the hotel lLopsen Catarina. My first impression of the reception was really nice marble floor very well kept, the staff very helpful and friendly to.
We had a slight confusion on the first night getting to our room which was in the block nearest to the tennis courts but this was soon resolved when a member of staff showed us a short cut much easier especially with heavy cases! On arrival we were told that a cold meal awaited us in the dining room along with water and coffee if we wanted it, which we did!
Our room was quite large with 2 beds and a sofa bed, air con, large wardrobes, fridge, table, comfy chair, balcony, Tv (all in Spanish or German apart from BBC news and CNN) advisable to take a small stereo system!!
Bathroom very nice great shower better than the one i have back home!!!

The food if going half board is good better if you get down around 6.30 -7.30pm in evening plenty of choice, breakfast mainly same everyday continental style.

I was not too impressed with the food served at the bar. Don't think they know what a real Club sandwich looks like as the one i ordered was like any normal sandwich with some salad thrown in could have made better myself so beware when ordering them.

Entertainment is OK nothing spectacular.......

Very German orientated and yes they still put down towels even after the hotel asks you not to!!

Well located if you want to be in the quieter area of Playa Del Ingles or near to the Yumbo Centre, there is a shopping mall near by
again bars German orientated.

Staff all very pleasant and friendly, i would go back to the Catarina

Great holiday

from cejedison
We stayed here last year and flew from Cardiff who only offer night flights to this area. We were tired when we got there but there was a cold meal all laid out, which was v. appreciated.
We were initially allocated a room that was above a disco that was still playing music into the early hours of the morning but upon complaining in the morning we were quickly offered two alternatives, the second of which we were happy with. It turned out that we had been confused with another couple named Jones, which we found out when out outbound tickets were given.

Anway the hotel was lovely with a lovely pool and a place to relax all day should you want it. The room was excellent and we had a view over the back end of the hotel which was peaceful in the evenings, the air con can be kept on if you take a Tesco card and leave it in the slot all day, when you get in then the room is lovely and cool. There was also free travel to and from the beach every day. Not that it was that far anyway. The Hotel is far enough away from the bustling night life but still close enough to head for a night out. There was plenty to do and a visit to the nearby water park kept us amused. Would definitely go back there again.

The food got a bit tiresome by the fourth day but you can trade in your evening meal for a La Carte for a small price more, which is definitely worthwhile for a more superior meal. We wished we had done that every night for the small price we had to pay - you had excellent service in that restaurant too.

The only gripe we had was the flights which were night flights and waiting around to go home was a drag, so would definitely reccomend booking the additional day which would cost about £30 more.

Stayed here 7 nights in January 2007.
Arrived after midnight , the chap on reception was pleasant and welcoming. The hotel were aware of our late arrival and had prepared a cold meal should we want it.
The front of the hotel does not look much from the road but once inside its a totally different place. Its a large international hotel catering for many different European tour operators, the staff speak many different languages and any relevant information is displayed in different languages too.
Our room was on the first floor facing the road and had a large balcony which to relax and watch people go by.The rooms at the rear of the hotel face the pool and sun terraces which are surrounded by palm trees, we also caught sight of some wild parrots.
The hotel is huge and consists of four buildings all linked together, although large you never felt like just a number, the staff were always friendly and happy to help particually in the restaurant which was busy but offered a superb choice of good quality food. This we felt was important as we have previously stayed in Playa del Ingles in self catering accommodation which was slightly cheaper to book but when you add the costs of eating out it worked out more expensive than staying in a hotel. We also found that the restaurants in resort offered quite similar menus and were not cheap.
The hotel has lots of amenities such as tennis courts, organised entertainment, shop, pool bar, bar lounge, hair dresser and even its own medical centre and doctor.
The rooms are bright, a good size and have been modernised , all with sat TV, safe, phone, fridge, and air conditioning. Bathrooms are modern with hair dryer and clean towels every day.
The hotel is in a great location across the road from the RIU Maspalomas Palace hotel, the sand dunes and a short walk from the Cita and Yumbo centres making it ideal for every nationality, taste and gender.
Its fair to say this is a 4* leisure hotel which offers excellent value for money, its good quality very clean holiday accommodation in a great location and offers something for everyone including good food.
We enjoyed it so much we have booked again for January 2008.

catarina the great

from canaria-7
we bookeed through thoas cook travel inoctober 2006 and arrived on january 22 ,2007 for one week. the frontage of the hotel does not do the establishment justice, other than that we had no complaints whatsoever. facilities were excellent and the food wastop notch .Being very good for the beach and dunes of Maspalomas and the in house entertainment was also very good .All the staff were very friendly and nothing was to much trouble.Once again thankyou catarina for an excellent holiday no complaints. All the very best from Eric Gayton/Sheila Wilson ,Northampton ,England

Good food, poor air conditioning

from BARR71
Went to this hotel last summer. The staff were lovely some had quite poor English though.

This is a busy hotel. If you can try and request a room with a view of the pool, these are in the main block. Some rooms you have to go outside to access the main hotel. Beds are a little uncomfortable but not to bad. The biggest problem this hotel has, is it has no Air Conditioning at night. We asked the hotel about this. What we had to do was pull the blinds during the day and leave a card in the slot. This didn't help. As soon as the A/C went off at night the heat just became unbearable. It was 32 degrees outside.

The swimming pools are brillant. 1 kids, a full size and 1 smaller pool. It is very difficult to get a sun lounger and parasol the hotel do not provide enough.

The food is lovely. Huge salads which I loved as did my mum. My dad and my husband struggled to find food that they liked. Kids had lots of choice. Entertainment in the evening is poor. The little cafe at the pool does the most amazing ice-cream and fruit try the Catarina it is gorgeous.

You can get a taxi to the beach, taxi's are very inexpensive.
You can walk down to the Riu Palace and walk all the way into the town(in the evening) and get a taxi back. Travelled around using the buses to other town's relatively simple. Travel around the island there are much prettier towns than Playa del Ingles.

We went to the Japanese restaurant one night across the road, very expensive but very nice.
Went to the Chinese across from the hotel and it was brillant and very inexpensive, I loved it.

Excellent Hotel.

from Paulinea132
My husband and I, both in our 60's have just returned from Playa del Ingles, Hotel Catarina and could not have asked for a better hotel, the room we had overlooking the pool was very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, cleaned everyday with fresh towels, beautiful restaurant and excellent food at all times, interesting that all the staff were waitresses and no waiters, they must be commended, they all were so cheerful and hardworking. Even in the bar lounge in the evenings, they were also waitresses, WHY? there must be a reason, we are intrigued. The only complaint was that almost all the beds were taken before breakfast and although the hotel specifically states in the brochure that beds must not be saved they do absolutely nothing to stop people doing it, we did in fact remove mattresses from beds that were vacant for a long time after mentioning this to the hotel staff and found nothing was done. This issue wasnt a problem its just the principle. The hotel is in a pleasant part of Playa del Ingles and within easy reach of the Dunes and a bus runs to the beach every hour, also you can walk from the hotel through the dunes to Maspalomas which takes about an hour or walk from where the bus drops you off along the beach to Maspalomas, this is very pleasant and not so tiring, visit the port of Mogan it is very pretty. We would definitely go back to this hotel. We were there christmas evening and New Years Eve, entertainment was acceptable but am sure if the tables and chairs were arranged better in the lounge people would have enjoyed having a dance, as it was we were just sitting listening to the music and not a lot happened until midnight when balloons were let off into the sky, other hotels did fireworks, but all in all not too exciting, however, we would definitely go to the hotel again.
