We satyed at the Merce hotel in Sept 2009 and you certainly get what you pay for but what you do not expect is that your room will be broken into, and not just ours there were a few done at the same time, all had locked suitcases and all occupied by brits, the hotel do not care about what happens here they will do nothing to assist you and try and brush this under the carpet, there were on closer inspection other rooms forced previously to ours you could see in the door frames the marks and they had tried to paint over them, you cannot leave anything in this hotel, and how they managed to only pick rooms with locked cases you can only imagine where they got this information from, i bet it was very close to the hotel staff, they will not even cover the cost of the damage to cases and try and look suprised that this has happened, even though the police told them to check there security camaras they did not do so, which makes me suspicious as to why not. Stay there at your peril, we had to barracade the room after this at night as there is not security

Hotel Merce is about 45 minutes from Girona airport, a taxi costs 55 Euros. The reception to the hotel is very plush and the staff were friendly and helpful but the room we stayed in was meant to be a double plus a camper bed for a child and instead they pushed all three beds together, this left little space in the room which was very basic facility wise. There is no TV, no fridge come mini bar, no telephone and only two plug sockets, one in the main room and one in the bathroom. The room is tiled through out but comparing the other rooms on the addtional floors we saw, we had the blandest room and one that had not been refurbhished to the same standard like susequent floors. If staying there I would recommend asking for a double bed (and not two singles pushed together) prior to coming to the hotel and ask for a room higher than the first floor (which was the floor that we stayed on) At night the street tended to get a little noisy but nothing major, also the walls are thin and you could hear most things! Be aware that this hotel also accepts pets so if you are not a dog lover then this hotel is probably not for you. The bathroom was infested with ants who later made there way to the bedroom and ontop of the dressing table, this was a nuisance but it did not spoil my holiday, I coped with it for a week. I paid £850 for a weeks holiday in a two star hotel in Pineda de Mar for two adults and a child. Hotel Merce is value for money, the breakfast is standard, fried breakfast, bread, rolls, meats, cheese, jams (although the fried food was drenched in oil!), the hotel is not plush but it is clean and comfortable, the maids cleaned the room everyday, there is Air con and the hotel is a great base for the beach and exploring Barcelona, Girona and other neighbouring resorts. The train is next to the beach which is a scenic 15 minute walk from the hotel and a return to Barcelona cost just 6 Euros and trains run every half hour. Would I stay in Pineda de Mar again, Yes, its a traditional spainish town where the locals out number the tourist, would I stay at hotel Merce, no, it was a nice stay but not nice enough, bearable for one week and next time I'll pay more to stay in a three star hotel.
